First sentence, first footnote covers both Williams birth date and birthplace;
however, his tombstone as far as I can see does not mention his place of birth.
Therefore, I would take out the words in Virginia here, or place the (1) for the
footnote after the date, then conclude the sentence with the words in Virginia.
Fourth paragraph: Per the 1850 census, I concur that William was most probably
the brother of Sarah Hartman Harshbarger. I find it interesting that William
appears to be living in the Harshbarger household, but he owns the land. Since
both men are tanners, they wouldnt need as much land as farmers would. The
$200 land value is a nice amount of land for a single man like William. How did
he acquire this land at the tender age of 23, when his brother in law doesnt own
any? I suspect he may have inherited a bit of land from his late father, or his
other gave it to him after his fathers death. Therefore are there any probate
records in Fountain County for George Hartman, or land transactions for George
or Elizabeth Hartman and/or William Hartman in the 1845-1850 time frame,
when William would be old enough to own or inherit land? Land records
should be good in that part of the country from that time period. (Oh, the
advantages of living in areas where Sherman didnt burn!) Also, Elizabeth
Hartman was widowed with minor children; there should be probate or orphans
court or guardianship records for Hartman children between 1840 and 1850.
There is a Fountain County Genealogical Society (I checked the countys genweb
site). It wouldnt hurt to send them a query, if you have not already done so.
Regarding the 1860 Vermillion County, IN, who is Rebecca Bennet? Do you have
any theories? By this time, William appears to be doing well for himself, land-
wise. Could Rebecca Bennet be a housekeeper? I believe if you re-read the 1860
census, you will see that Rebecca does not own real estate; she has a modest $40
worth of personal property, which leads me to believe he is a servant, mistress or
some sort of kin keeping house for William! Id love to hear your input on this.
(Your narrative has her correctly owning $40 in personal property, but the notes
on the graphics portion of the CD said it was real estate.)
William Hartman married rather late for his era. His marriage to Elizabeth
Nicholas is well documented. Tragically, Elizabeth died young, leaving two
small children, obviously raised by Williams in-laws. Fortunately that
relationship is established in the 1880 census, referring to both Hartman children
as their grandchildren.
Oh, the enigmatic William Hartman! He married late, fathered two children,
seems to avoid serving in the Civil War and disappeared for a couple of decades!
He even managed to get married during the war and have a child when most
men were fighting far from home. Did he dump the children with his in-laws
and head west, as many men did after the war? Did he have a change of heart
and run off late in the war and serve with the Southern Cause, since he was born
in Virginia, like Rhett Butler? You could almost write a mystery novel around
this man.
On a hunch, I did an 1870 census search through Ancestry.com for any William
Hartman, born ca. 1825 in VA. There was only one and he has a double entry,
same county and state, California, Yolo Co., Cache Creek: William D. Hartman,
47, born Virginia, farmer; however, his six children range in age from 18 to 6, all
born in Iowa, except for the youngest, born in California. Dead end! You may
already have done this, but it looked like such a close match, I just had to take a
peek. Unless William led some sort of double life and gallivanted between IN
and IA to two sets of wives and children, this cant be the same man. Since your
William Hartman didnt die until 1896, do you know if there is an obituary for
him in the county in which he is buried? He could well prove to be one of your
most fascinating and colorful forebears.
CONCLUSION: Data strongly suggests that William Hartman was the son of
George Hartman and Elizabeth. However, without more documentation, it
cannot be proved. (See suggestions above.)
