28. Documentation for John L.

Fox
(18 October 1818 to 06 January 1899)
father of Daniel Alexander Fox
(13 January 1860 to 29 July 1932)
John L. Fox was born October 18, 1818, near Miamisburg, Ohio.(1) He was the
son of George Fox and Elizabeth Ann Link.(2)
John L. Fox married Susannah Hiligass on November 11, 1845, in Miami
Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, by the Reverend George Long.(3) Susannah
Hiligass was the daughter of Michael Hiligass and Anna Yeakel(Weikel). She was born
November 30, 1819, in Montgomery County, Ohio .(4)
John L. Fox and Susannah Hiligass were the parents of seven children: Anna
Elizabeth, Mary Susannah, Catherine Florence, Martha Jane, Margaret Persilla, John
Adam, and Daniel Alexander Fox. All of the children were born in Ohio except Daniel,
who was born in Vermillion County, Indiana.(5)
Susannah Hiligass Fox died August 11, 1894, in Gessie, Highland Township,
Vermillion County, Indiana.(6) John L. Fox died January 6, 1899, probably in Highland
Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.(7) Both Susannah (Hiligass) Fox and John L.
Fox are buried in Hopewell Cemetery west of Covington, Indiana.(8)
The will of John L. Fox lists the following children: Margaret Ricketts, John A.
Fox, Anna E. Goff, Mary Burnett, and Daniel A. Fox.(9) Martha Jane was not mentioned

REPORT FOR CURT OLDER

JOHN L. FOX (#28), FATHER OF DANIEL ALEXANDER FOX

This file shows how important estate papers can be, since John L. Fox is mentioned in
his father Georges estate papers, as is his mother, Elisabeth, the widow of George.
Footnote #1: John L. Foxs tombstone gives his death date and exact age, making it
possible to determine his birth date. More good evidence.

Lets next discuss The Fox Genealogy, compiled in 1914 and published in 1924. These
older genealogy compilations can be a tremendous help in researching, but of course
are only as good as the persons who compile them. I am assuming, since you are using
it often as a source, that this genealogy contains much factual material
(births/deaths/marriages) from courthouses, etc., not just family stories. If the book
gives transcriptions of vital records, and Bible entries, etc., then it is a valuable and
presumably reliable source. I see in Susannahs file, that you have included the intro to
the book and the author spent a great deal of time researching in the geographic areas
where these persons actually lived it certainly appears that the author was a skilled
researcher. I have used these old genealogies in my own family research. When
documents are mentioned, I then try to collect copies of those documents to be sure
what was written in the book is accurate. I see that you have obtained a copy of John L.
Foxs will, for example, and it is a good one, naming five of his children. It looks like
you are using the Fox book and also getting other backup material as well, for example,
in footnote #4 where you cite not only the book, but also Susannahs tombstone. Also,
footnote #5, where you cite the book and then censuses. Thats good research, because
you are using the Fox book as a starting point, then backing up those facts by trying to
obtain documents that support what the book says. One good thing about those older
genealogy books: Many times there were still old-timers who knew some of the
people in the book and even had letters and Bibles that no longer exist. That can be
very helpful. (It is Murphys Law of Genealogy that the craziest, least interested person
in each family ends up with the family papers. In just a couple of generations, much
valuable family info can be forever lost.)

In the ninth paragraph, you cite History of Vermillion County, Indiana, and mention at
the time the book was published, but nowhere in the narrative or the footnotes can I
find a date of publication. When was it published?

If it were not for an old county history of biographical sketches from the 1880s, I would
know nothing at all about one of my great-great grandfathers. Two of his sons had
sketches and mentioned some info about their father, who has only been located in one
census report. These old bios are chock full of information, much of which was
furnished by the family members themselves and may therefore be embellished a bit -
- but they still provide valuable information.

Regarding John L. Foxs will: Five of his seven children are named in it. Did Catherine
Florence and Martha Jane die young?
That is a nice list of the brothers and sisters of John L. Fox, but what is the source? Is it
from the Fox book? There should be some sort of acknowledgement of the source(s).

CONCLUSIONS: You have excellent proof of marriage for John L. Fox and his wife
Susannah Hiligass, from two sources: The Fox book and the marriage record from Yates
Publications, which I assume is transcribed from vital records. You have proof of John
L. Foxs parentage both from the Fox book and from his fathers will. You have
concrete proof of John L. Foxs birth and death dates from his tombstone. Good proofs.
