Dear Mr. President:
‘We would lke to convey our grave concers with the decision to eliminate funding forte West
(Cosst Eaithguche Early Wty systew iu your Fival Yous 2018 but reyuest This wlaively
inexpensive and proven technology will save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce the ecommnic
impact of an earthquake,
‘Support forthe system has been sustained and increasing over the pas few yeas. Congress
appropriated $5 million forthe system in FY15, $8.2 million in FY16, and $102 in FY1?,
«demonstrating a growing, bipartisan appreciation forthe system's utility. A major eartheuake on
‘the West Coast could cause billions of dollars in damage and endanger countless lives
Earthquake Early Waring is a cost-effective investment to protect critical infrastructure,
including wlies and manufacturers, fom the damage caused by a major earthquake.
Earthquake Early Waring technology has been deployed for years in other nation including
Japan and Mexico, Thanks to federal funding and sizeable coteibution from the sate of
‘California last year, the West Coast Earthquake Early Waring system is ontrack tobe wvailable
to the public ona limited basis next year. To cutoff he funding now will ake us backwards and
deprive American citizens and businesses along the West Coast of an invaluable ool to protect,
themselves and their property. We will be working to ensure thatthe West Coast Earthquake
Early Warning system continues to receive crucial federal funding, because investing inthis
technology now could save lives when a large earthquake suikes, and we would welcome your
support forthis critical project i the future
Sincerely,
