Grade Level: 4th
1. STANDARD (NGSS): 3-5-ETS1-1: Students who demonstrate
understanding can define a simple problem reflecting a need or a want
that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on
materials, time, and cost.
2. OBJECTIVES
a. Content Standard-The student will learn why inventions are
created by identifying problems and creating solutions.
b. Science Practices:
i. Asking questions and defining problems (1)
ii. Constructing explanations and designing solutions (6)
c. Academic Language: invention

3. ASSESSMENT-
Informal (Formative): participation in discussions and
brainstorming
Formal (Summative): Choosing one of the problems we listed
as a class, create an invention to solve this problem by
completing the worksheet.
4. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES AND LEARNING TASKS
To support student learningwhat you and the students will be doing
I. ANTICIPATORY SET
Motivation: Have students look around the room. What
inventions do you see? Why was that inventions created?
Activate Prior Knowledge: Ask: What is an invention?

II. INSTRUCTION AND MODELING (Best Practice Strategies)

Read A Real Hole-in-One passage
o What is the problem the inventor is trying to solve? Why
was this invention needed?
o What is the purpose of the invention?
Lead students in creating a list of things that bug them
(problem finding)

III. GUIDED PRACTICE

Students brainstorm in home groups solutions to identified
problems.
o Emphasize combining objects to create a new product
Discuss and evaluate potential solutions/inventions as a large
group
o Ask students SCAMPER questions as appropriate
What other materials could you use?
How can you combine some of these ideas?
Could we change an old invention and modify it?
How?
Can you use something else in a new way?
IV. CLOSURE (Student summary of learning)
Who can remind me why inventions are created?

V. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (You may restate the Summative

assessment from above)
Choosing one of the problems we listed as a class, create an
invention to solve this problem by completing the worksheet.
If there is extra time, have students share their ideas.

5. DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGIES
To support learning differences, English Learners, IEPs, 504, GATE
Provide additional questions to scaffold and help with
brainstorming

6. INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

A Real Hole-in-One passage
Lined paper and pencil
Invention worksheet
