HW1: Assignment#1

1.

a) From Ideal gas law:

P1V1 = P2 (V1 + V2 + 0.01V2); P1= 300psig, P2 = 150 psig, V1 = 98.70

cc and 1% dead volume of V2

So, Volume of Vessel V2 = (P1V1 P2V1)/1.10xP2

So, V2 = (300 x 98.70 150 x 98.70)/1.10x150

= 185.67 cc

b) Again Considering Ideal gas law and pores are interconnected and contain
gas,
P1V1 = P2 {Vvoid inside vessel + Vpore volume + 0.01V2}
= P2 {(V2 Cylindrical Volume of rock) + (Cylindrical Volume of rock/bulk volume Grain
Volume) + 0.01V2}
= P2 {(V2 D2 h/4) + ( D2 h/4 Grain Volume) + 0.01V2} ; D= Diameter of rock sample
and h= length of rock sample

So, Grain Volume = D2 h/4 ( P1V1 P2(V2 - D2 h/4) 0.01P2V2 )

P2

C) Porosity = Bulk volume - Grain volume x 1 0 0 %

Bulk volume;

Using eqn from b),

P1 = 300 psig,
P2 = 180 psig
V1 = 98.70cc
V2 = 185.67 from a)
D = 2.5 cm
h = 8cm

So, Grain Volume = 23.03cc

Bulk volume = D2 h/4 = 39.25cc

So, Porosity = 41.32%
Comment: Pore volume considered interconnected with gas content but there could be some pores
which are not interconnected and not contain gas so porosity considered above is not
reasonable for rock sample.
d) h = 16 cm
P2 = 236 psig
All other values are same as before.

Using eqn in b) and c)

Grain Volume = 62.06 cc

Bulk Volume = 78.5 cc
So, Porosity = 20.94%

Comment: Longer sample has less porous than the shorter sample and can have less gas content.
Increase of grain size/volume decrease the pore size/volume.
