and saving choices for their own family.
Students will make, evaluate, revise and refine criteria to draw conclusions (based on
relevant information) in order to plan a family outing in Atlanta.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION(s)
What choices have you made that were based on what was available?

TEACHER LESSON PREPARATION What needs to be done prior to the lesson?

Before this lesson, TTW have already introduced and taught a Personal Finance
mini-unit through the 2nd grade Jimmy Carter unit. TSW have a basic understanding
of spending and saving. TTW also review adding and subtracting dollar amounts.
Preview vocab.: scarcity, benefit, opportunity cost, and personal finance.
This lesson will be a part of a Project Based Learning (PBL) experience designed by
the 2nd grade team at Cogburn Woods ES.
Students have written letters to eight different Family Attractions located in
Atlanta requesting information on the venues. What information was not secured
via mail was researched on the internet.
Students need to have their home address written down on an index card.
TTW secure a class set of iPads for use of SEESAW App (#SEESAW= will denote
places in lesson where students will document their learning to be shared w/
teacher & parents)

ACTIVATING STRATEGY
TTW say, I want you to think about yourself for a few minutes. What
kinds of choices do you make on a daily basis? Why do you make those
choices? TSW call out answers and TTW record responses on the board. TTW then
pass out post-it notes for students to record their next response. TTW ask the EQ,
What choices have you made that were based on what was available? TSW think-write-
pair-share with a partner. Volunteers will be called on to share out.
Hook: TSW begin by conducting a Comparative Decision Making Matrix. TSW help
me to decide which class pet to have visit our classroom. TSW use the matrix listed under
resources to determine criteria that they will use to evaluate. TTW guide students to
appropriate criteria. TTW help student to fill out the matrix using the document camera.
This matrix will be referenced throughout the lesson. TTW model and define the following
vocabulary words:
criteria, solutions, justify, evaluate, irrelevant, and matrix

Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology

Day 1
Phase 1: Examine the Content
1. Set the Scene: TTW pose the following questions: Have you ever had to decide
where you wanted to go for dinner? What criteria did you use in deciding where to
go? Have your family or friends ever said no to your suggestion? What reasons
(criteria) did they give?
2. Pose the EQ: What choices have you made that were based on what was
available? How did you make your decision? TSW share out responses whole group.
3. Introduce the task: The 2nd grade teachers are excited to share with you the
topic of our next PBL. You will have $150.00 to use towards a Family Fun Day of
your CHOICE. Where would you want to go in Atlanta to have a great day with your
family during Spring Break? What factors will you consider?
4. Students will view the 2nd grade teacher-created video link below to learn what the
8 Family Attraction choices are:
https://fultonk12.sharepoint.com/sites/2ndgradecwesplc/_layouts/15/guestaccess.
aspx?guestaccesstoken=DP2EmuDHSwlgZFLilofuYKSBsiDXlRkSikeZjJYOYSw=&doc
id=2_0cfd7113e86034cc9b29c35397af135b4&rev=1
5. After showing the video clip above, TTW immediately ask the students to ponder
our essential question again, What choices have you made that were based
on what was available? TTW ask, What choice would you want to
make for a Family Fun Day and why? TSW share their thoughts with an
elbow partner.
6. TTW handout a packet of information on each of the family attractions (Family Fun
Info noted in resources). Differentiation: Students may choose to work with
another student who has the same number of family members or they make choose
to work independently. Modifications: Students may also access iPads to do
further research, beyond what is stated in the packet, on the following family
attractions:
Lake Lanier Islands
World of Coke
College Football Hall of Fame
Six Flags Over Georgia
Stone Mountain
Zoo Atlanta
Georgia Aquarium
Sky View Atlanta

7. TSW choose their top 5 family attractions from the list and record them on the
Family Fun Day Decision-Making Matrix.
8. TSW either work independently OR work in a small group of no more than 3. The
groups MUST have EITHER the same family attraction OR the same number of
family members.

Day 2

9. Phase 2: Decision MAKING

If working in groups to determine criteria, TTW review the Rules for
Brainstorming:
Turn off judgement. Do not criticize others ideas.
Wild & crazy is okay. There are no dumb ideas.
Lots of ideas is best! A storm, not a drizzle
Build on other peoples ideas
10. TTW pose the question: How can we decide which decision is best? TTW
refer students back to our hook. What criteria did we use to
determine which class pet would be best? What factors did we
determine to be the most important criterion to use?
11. With a small group or independently, brainstorm as many possible criteria as
possible (at least 3) that you can use to evaluate all of the family attractions.
**The criteria will be formed by writing questions that can be answered with yes or
no answers. Modification: TTW help /prompt students who need support coming up
with criteria.
12. TSW will utilize the Are We There Yet page and QR code to calculate the
distance from their house to the four family attractions. Record info. on the
Family Fun Day Research Page.
13. TSW enter four criteria (how you will make your decision AND phrased in the form
of yes or no questions) in the boxes at the top of the chart.
14. TSW research to answer the criteria questions accurately. Information will be
recorded on the Family Fun Day Research Page. For each family attraction,
TSW evaluate with a yes or no for each of the criteria questions on the Family
Fun Day Decision-Making Matrix. For any no answers, TSW provide a short
explanation of support.
15. TSW total the number of yes answers for each family attraction. TSW highlight
the family attraction that received the most yes answers. If students have a tie,
they must create additional criterion to break the tie. TSW document learning on
matrix using (#SEESAW)
16. TSW write a page describing which Family Attraction Location they selected and
why. Students writing should justify the decision made using support from the
content of the criteria used.

Phase 3: Synthesis Activity

17. Communicate the decision: TTW say, Today, we are going to review our EQs
from yesterday. What choices have you made that were based on what
was available? What family attraction did you choose for your
family to visit? What was your decision based on?
18. TSW use classroom iPads or laptops to design a pitch detailing why they chose their
family attraction to visit. Their pitch must include information given in the content.
The following questions must be answered in their pitch:
Which family attraction did you select?
What would be the cost for your family?
What will your travel time be?
Why would this family attraction be the best for your family to visit, compared to
the other locations?
What other information would you like for use to know?

19. TSW have Voice & Choice as to how they will share their pitch. Students can
write a persuasive letter to parents, create an attraction brochure, create a
commercial to visit the family attraction or design a skit. (#SEESAW)

Assessment Strategies
Informal assessment- student use of responses on Post-It notes and verbal answers to
discussion questions whole group and with partners/small group
SEESAW App documented work through photo, video, text, labels and voice clips

Formal assessment- Student-created pitch answering the questions listed above.

Summarizing activity: 3-2-1 Exit Ticket

3-What THREE criteria do you think were the most important in making your decision?
2-Name TWO things you did not know about planning a trip.
1-What is ONE thing you learned about the decision making process?

Differentiation
Lesson is clearly differentiated for gifted learners by use of one or more of the following:
acceleration- Students can investigate the cost of gas, mileage, meals for travel to
and from the family attraction.

extensions - TSW begin lesson by reviewing criteria in the boxes on the documented
work on SEESAW. TSW read and respond to ONE other students work with a Glow &
Grow (a positive remark and a question or clarification question). Other student MUST
have chosen the same family attraction.
enrichment- Students can research, discover, and plan a day trip to another state
within a 3-hour driving distance of their choice to work on during Genius Hour.
