A USTRALIAN H OUSE OF R EPRESENATIVES

I NDEPENDENT C ANDIDATE FOR L ALOR

Wednesday 28 July 2010

My fellow constituents of Lalor By Twitter and Facebook

I am writing to introduce myself as an independent political voice.

I am a long-term local who wishes to represent us all, at home and in Canberra as a future Honourable
Member for Lalor.

I enclose some information that I wish to give you so that you can make an informed decision who to vote for
on 21 August 2010.

Australia's most respected political commentator, Channel Nine's Laurie Oakes, has described this election as
a battle between “two political pygmies”.

This 21 August 2010 general election was crudely called, with indecent haste and much political and
Constitutional impropriety.

I have no doubt that there will be a record number of federal By-Elections in 2011. Several legal challenges
are foreseeable. One has already started. And more bizarre political intrigues are likely.

I believe that we in Lalor will be going to the polls again for a By-Election in mid- to late-2011.

I stand for absolute honesty and transparency in politics and in government. I admit that the most likely
outcome for Lalor on 21 August 2010 is that Julia Gillard will scrape through. I expect that she will be re-
elected for a fifth term, with the benefit of second preferences handed to her by the Australian Greens. This
will be a sad result for us and for Australia.

The Australian Labor Party is so inherently destabilised and is so unfit to govern us that I have doubts that Julia
Gillard's political career will survive until the time of the 2011 Lalor By-Election.

The Rudd-Gillard Government is a disturbing shadow, a dwarf of the great Keating and Whitlam Labor
Governments of the past.

The prospect of a Gillard-Swan Government is also dwarfed by the prospect a more competent Abbott-Bishop
Government if the swing against the Rudd-Gillard government is as big as common sense and recent political
experience (eg the 2010 Victorian Altona By-Election) suggests the anti-ALP swing should be.

I expect that the momentum against the Gillard-Swan Government will grow as we get closer to polling day.

I hope that you will find my approach to politics refreshing and inspiring.

As these brochures indicate, I have always been something a rarity in the legal profession. I am a first-
generation lawyer, which is quite a rarity. And I come from humble working class origins, which is extremely
rare. I have built my first-class legal, commercial and political career on merit and personal performance.

My goals for the 21 August 2010 election are modest. My greater ambitions have to wait for 2011 and 2013.

I am more focussed on getting my ideas and goals for reform implemented by and through other people.
Running for political office is necessary to get a voice for my ideas and goals for reform. It is a sad state of
affairs when politicians are flat out telling their constituents what to do (ie ruling every aspect of our lives) rather
than listening to what their constituents tell them we want to do (ie collecting and representing our views).

For 21 August 2010 my goal is that we in Lalor get a new federal member for Lalor. We deserve someone who
stands by, for and inside Lalor.

We deserve someone to cure the 12 years of chronic neglect and contempt that Julia Gillard has shown us,
ignoring Lalor voters issues and concerns while she plays national political power games.

Laurie Oakes' “two political pygmies” comment is typical of many informed commentators on the 2010
Australian Federal election lamenting the mediocrity of our major political parties and our major political
leaders. Such comments are damning indictments of the failures of Australia's two major political parties,
Liberal and Labor. They are damning indictments of the failures of the two party leaders, Tony Abbott and Julia
Gillard. They are damning indictments of their failures to inspire and their inabilities to lead their parties. They
are damning indictments of their failures to inspire us and their inabilities to lead us.

While the Australian Greens' Adam Bandt looks set to be elected as the new Member for Melbourne, it is
unthinkable that on a two-party preferred basis the battle for Lalor in 2010 will be anything other than the usual
two-party battle between the major parties – Liberal's Sheridan Ingram and Labor's Julia Gillard.

We in Lalor have the opportunity to make a protest vote against Julia Gillard. Every protest vote in Lalor is a
protest vote on behalf of all Australians.

My goal for 21 August 2010 is to give us in Lalor the means to make a more permanent protest vote against
Julia Gillard and the “anti-values about everything except gaining powers” political creed that she represents.

The Australian Greens are not an effective protest vote in 2010 because every Green vote will ultimately find
its way back into Julia Gillard's pocket as a redistributed second preference. I am an effective protest vote in
2010 because a vote for me will be recorded first as a vote for me but, when it counts on a two party preferred
basis, winds up being given to Sheridan Ingram or second preferences.

Voting for me is therefore a more permanent protest vote than voting for the Greens' candidate. Everyone who
votes for me will eventually have their vote redistributed to Liberal's Sheridan Ingram against Julia Gillard,
provided that you follow my how to vote suggestions on election day. In this way every vote for me may help
to get Julia Gillard ”fired” from Lalor and “fired” from Labor.

John Howard was the first sitting Prime Minister ever to be “fired” by the people of Benelong at the 2007
general election. We have 40,000 new voters in Lalor registered to vote on 21 August 2010. We have
141,000 voters in 2010 compared to only 101,000 registered voters at the 2007 election.

With a 12 year record of contempt and neglect of constituents of Lalor, there are many good reasons why on
21 August 2010 Julia Gillard could go down in Australian and Commonwealth history as the second sitting
Prime Minister (in a row) to be voted out of office by her constituents.

And what a fitting demonstration that will be of Australians' dissatisfaction and distrust of third rate politicians,
our broken political and justice systems, our broken constitution and our broken democracy. What a fitting
demonstration of our will and our determination to fix things.
Best wishes

JAMES JOHNSON
