Wind storm

A massive storm system brought rain and pow-

erful winds to Strathmore on May 24, damaging
What a performance homes and vegetation around the community. The
wind reached speeds of 98 km/hr according to En-
vironment Canada.
There were quite a few trees that went down
Page 21 and were damaged in the parks and all over town,
said Dave Rimes, interim operations manager with
the Town of Strathmore. We had some damage to
the fence at the tennis court up by curling rink. Its
amazing, even the big corner posts are bent. Its
amazing the wind did that.
According to Rimes, although damage caused by
the storm wasnt exclusive to one part of town, the
older sections of Strathmore with bigger trees got
hit the hardest. Fences were knocked down around
town, including at Lambert Village. Many homes

Power was on and off in various parts of
Strathmore during the storm. Power lines had trees
fall on them but Fortis and the tree crews respond-
ed quickly, tackling dangerous or emergency issues
first.
Probably the busiest people after the storm were
the tree crews and Fortis because they were run-
ning around trying to get power back up and the
trees off everywhere else, said Rimes.

drops semis tilt
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

There will be a new southcentral zone cham-

pion in girls rugby.
After the zone semis were postponed due to
last weeks wind storm and torrential down-
pour, the Strathmore High School Spartans fi-
nally faced off against the Foothills Composite
High School Falcons May 29 in Okotoks.
It was a great game, we just happened to be
on the wrong side of the scoreboard at the end,
said Spartans head coach Jerry Flaws.
The Falcons got the best of the Spartans 24-7.
With only 20 minutes remaining in regulation,
the Spartans were still within striking distance,
trailing 10-7.
Holy Cross Collegiate standout Darcie Weir
was responsible for the Spartans lone try on the
evening.
Several dropped passes down the stretch, as
the Falcons controlled scrums and dominated
possession, sealed the Spartans fate.
Last time these two teams met was in the sea-
son opener, when the Falcons crushed the Spar-
tans 37-0 at home.
It wasnt all bad news, as the loss didnt end
their season. The Spartans played in the bronze
medal game June 1 at the Calgary Rugby Union.
They found out their opponent late on May 30.
Following that, they still have a chance to
