Abstract
[1]Traditionally,Pwavearrivaltimeshavebeenusedtolocateregionalearthquakes.Incontrast,thetravel
timesofsurfacewavesdependentonsourceexcitationandthesourceparametersanddepthmustbe
determinedindependently.Thussurfacewavepathdelaysneedtobeknownbeforesuchdatacanbe
usedforlocation.Thesedelayscanbeestimatedfrompreviousearthquakesusingthecutandpaste
technique,AmbientSeismicNoisetomography,andfrom3Dmodels.TakingtheChinoHillseventasan
example,weshowconsistencyofpathcorrectionsfor(>10s)LoveandRayleighwavestowithinabout1s
obtainedfromthesemethods.Wethenusetheseempiricallyderiveddelaymapstodeterminecentroid
locationsof138SouthernCaliforniamoderatesized(3.5>M w >5.7)earthquakesusingsurfacewaves
alone.Itappearsthatthesemethodsarecapableoflocatingthemainzoneofrupturewithinafew(3)km
accuracyrelativetoSouthernCaliforniaSeismicNetworklocationswith5stationsthatarewelldistributed
inazimuth.Wealsoaddressthetimingaccuracyrequiredtoresolvenondoublecouplesourceparameters

1.Introduction
[2]Thecharacterizationofearthquakesintermsofhypocenter,mechanism,origintime,anddirectivity
remainsamajorfocusofseismicmonitoring.TraditionalmethodsgenerallyusethetraveltimesofPwavesto
locateeventsandlongperiodsurfacewavesformagnitude(M W )estimates[ Clintonetal. ,2006].Modern
regionalseismicnetworks(Figure1)havedensestationcoveragesufficientforaveragingoutbiasesdueto
localsiteandpathcomplications.Thus,theorigintime,hypocenter,mechanism,andsizeofaneventcouldbe
welldeterminedandreportedwithinminutes[ Hauksson ,2001].Similarrealtimesystemshavebeen
developedinrecentyearsinotherseismicallyactiveregionstomonitorseismicactivityforrapidnotification
anddamageassessment[e.g., Geeetal. ,1996 Okadaetal. ,2004 Tajimaetal. ,2002 Tengetal. ,
1997].

[3]However,manyearthquakeswithmagnitudelargerthan4.0haveweakonsets,whichmakesthemdifficult
tolocate[ Linetal. ,2007].Suchastherecent2008ChinoHillsearthquake(M w =5.4)whichdisplaysthis
property[ Haukssonetal. ,2008].Thus,locatingthemainrupturezonecanbeaugmentedbyusingother
phasessuchashasbeendonebytheGlobalstudiesofCentroidMomentTensor(CMT)estimation
[ Dziewonskietal. ,1981].Inthisstudy,weintroducesometechniquesthatusedtogethercanimprovethe
accuracyofeventcharacterizationandadvancerealtimereportingofearthquakes.
[4]Westartwithabriefreviewofexistingmethodologies,andintroduceourapproach.Forconvenience,we
breakregionalseismogramsintotheextendedPwaves(Pnl)andsurfacewaveswhichhavesimplepulselike
shapesatlocaldistanceswhenfilteredto5sorlonger[ ZhaoandHelmberger ,1994 Zhuand
Helmberger ,1996].ThebasicideaisdisplayedinFigure2fortheverticalcomponentofoneoftheChino
HillsobservationsatstationGMR(Figure1).Generally,itisdifficulttooverlayasyntheticforanentirerecord
becauseofvariationsinshallowcrustalvelocity.Thusthecutandpaste(CAP)methodologybreaksthe
recordingupintosegmentsasgiveninFigure2adenotedasPnlandSurfacewave,andagridsearchscheme
isappliedtodeterminethebestsourceparametersbyallowingtimingshiftsbetweensegmentsofobserved
waveformsandsynthetics.Thereareadvantagesinusingbroadbandwaveformsinsourceinversion,butit
requiresaccurate3DGreen'sfunctionsorempiricalsitecorrections[ Tanetal. ,2006].Generally,filteringthe
Pnlwaveformwitha5slowpass(Figure2c)andsurfacewaveswitha10slowpass(Figure2b)proves
workableinsemiautomatedpracticeasdisplayedinFigure2.

[5]ByproductsofthegridsearcharethetimingcorrectionsneededforalignmentasdisplayedinFigure2,i.e.,
the3.6sshiftfortheRayleighwave.Ifsuchdelayscanbeaccuratelyestimated,wecoulduseRayleighwaves
tolocateearthquakessimilartothewayofusingPwaves. Tanetal. [2010]introducedanempirical
approachtodeterminethesedelaysbasedonpastearthquakesasgiveninFigure3withapredictionforthe
pathbetweensourceandstationGMRofabout4s.ThebottomtraceinFigure2disanexamplefitfora
syntheticgeneratedfroma3Dmodel[ Tapeetal. ,2009].Hereweareessentiallyfittinga3Dsyntheticwitha

[6]Inthispaper,wewillbeginwithacasestudyoftheChinoHillseventusingthetomographicmapswhere
thedelays(Figure3)areobtainedfrompreviousevents[ Tanetal. ,2010].Basedonthesemaps,surface
wavetraveltimecorrectionsbetweenanytwopointsarecomputedbysummingtheperturbationalongthe
greatcirclepath.Thus,ourpaperisessentiallyanextensionoftheseeffortswherewecomparethelocations
obtainedfor138eventswithsurfacewavesagainstthosegivenintheSouthernCaliforniaSeismicNetwork
(SCSN)catalog.Thisisfollowedbyaconsiderationoftheaccuracyofquickestimatesfromasparsenetwork.
Inthediscussionsection,werevisittheChinoHillseventwithcomparisonsagainstASN,3Dtiming
considerationsandnondoublecouplecontributionstolocationtradeoffs.
2.ChinoHillsEventasaTest
[7]Totestourmethod,wechosetheChinoHillsevent(29July2008)whichwaswellrecordedbythelocal
seismicarray(Figure1),andwasnotaneventlistedinthedataset[ Tanetal. ,2010]whichwasusedto
derivedthetomographicmap.Dataarearrangedaccordingtodistanceandazimuthassumingtheestimated
epicenterandassembledinwaveformsegmentscorrespondingtorespectivegroupvelocities(U PnL ,U Rayleigh ,
U Love ),andarealignedwiththe1DsyntheticasinFigure2foreachsegment.Timeshiftsareproduced
automaticallyforeachseismogrambyapplyingtheCAPanalysis.HeretheGreen'sfunctionsarecomputed
usingareflectivitycode[ ZhuandRivera ,2002]andstoredinalibrarywitha1kmgridinbothdepthand
distance.Thisparticulardatasetisbrokeninto3ranges,0to100km,100kmto200km,and200kmto300
km,withstationsinthefirstquadrantincluded(Figure4).Asdisplayed,theinvertedsourceparametersare
stableandquiteindependentoftherangewindow,withastrike,dip,rake,momentmagnitudeanddepth
(288/61/129/5.4/15km)mechanism.

[8]Performingtheanalysisonotherlayeredvelocitymodelswillchangethedepthandmomentestimatesbut
onlyslightlyattheseperiods[ JonesandHelmberger ,1998],however,the t R (Rayleighwavetimeshift)
and t L (Lovewavetimeshift)valueswillchange.ThetimeshiftsrelativetotheSCmodel(StandardSouthern
California1Dcrustalmodel)aregiveninspiderdiagramsinFigure5a.Severalstationshavepinklines
indicatingtheirdelaysfortheRayleighwavesareover5s.However,thewaveformsarefitwell(bluetriangles
representinghighwaveformcorrelation),asaretheover90stationsshown.Basinstationsgenerallyhave
complexwaveformswithlowcorrelationsandareremovedautomaticallyforcorrelationcoefficientslessthan
0.7indeterminingthesourceparameters.Generally,wefindupto2/3oftheSCSNarrayfittingwell.Notethat

iftheSCmodelwastheearth,wecouldeasilyreducethese t'sbymovingthesourceawayfromwarm

colorsandtowardcoolcolors,orabout4kmbasedonthesecorrections.However,thegeneralpatternsof
delaysinFigure5aarealsoseeninthecalibrationpredictions(Figure3)asdisplayedinFigure5b.Sincethe
latterwerederivedfromsmallerevents,theyshouldberelativelyfreefromsignificantfinitesourceeffects,
wherethelocationsbythePpicksandcentroidagree[ TanandHelmberger ,2010].Thus,itdoesappear
thatthe t R delaysinthedataarelargerforpathstotheNNWthaninthecalibrationssuggestingsome
correctioninlocationisneeded.

equation(B7).TheRootMeanSquare(RMS)valuesaredisplayedinFigures6c6f.NotethattheRMS
valuesarereducedfrom1.4to0.6withtomographiccorrections.Withoutdelaycorrections,theinversion
movestheeventabout4kmtotheSouth.Withcorrections,theeventmovesmoretothewest,whichisclose
tothatobtainedfromtheASNresult[ Zhanetal. ,2011]andtheresultfrom3Dcorrections.Generally,the
observedLovewavesarefitbetterthantheRayleighanddisplaylesstraveltimescatter.Becausethesurface
wavedelaysdependonmechanism,therearetradeoffswithlocationerror.Thissubjectisaddressedby Tan
etal. [2006]withanextensionoftheCAPmethodtoincludetwomorehorizontallocationparameters,called
CAPloc.

[10]Sinceourinversionstartsfromagivenepicenterlocation,andtherearealwayssomeerrorsassociated
withit,wealsotestthesensitivityofourinversionschemetotheepicenterlocation.AsshowninFigure7,we
invertforthecentroidlocationsassumingtheshiftedepicenterlocationsinlongitudeandlatitudedirections
(2km,5kmand10km).Theinvertedcentroidlocationsarescatteredinarangeoflessthan2kmandall
located3kmtothewestoftheSCECepicenter(theredstar)consistentwiththeresultobtainedinFigure6f.
Thetwolocationswiththelargesterrors,whichareabout50%largerthanthoseofthesmallestones,arethe
oneswithoriginalepicenterlocationsshiftedby10km.Thissensitivitytestsuggeststhatlocationerrorsofless
than2kmgiventhecurrentaccuracyofearthquakelocationwithintheSouthernCaliforniaSeismicNetwork.

3.CentroidLocationsof157SCEarthquakes
[11]Inthissection,weaddresstherelocationofeventsranginginsizefrom3.5<Mw<5.7listedinthe
cataloggivenby Tanetal. [2010]andincludedinAppendixA.Theeventsoccurredbetween1998and2004
andrangeindepthsfrom3.2to18km.Onlyeventsatdepthsbetween3and15kmwereusedtogenerate
thedelay(tomographic)mapsgiveninFigure3.ThelocationsoftheseeventswerereferencedtotheSCSN
catalogthatdetermineslocationofanearthquakewith1DSCmodel.Thusanyrelocationbysurfacewaves

shouldbeclosetothesevalueseventhoughthetraveltimecorrectionsareaveragedin10kmcubesinthe
GoTo
surfacewavecorrectionmaps(Figure3).Onlytimeshiftsofsurfacewaveswithgoodwaveformfits(CC
0.90)areusedintherelocationprocedure.Thiscriterioneliminatesbadfittingcomponentsbutreducesthe
numberofstations,especiallyforthosewithmagnitudesnearthelowerlimit(M w 3.5)andthoseatthe
boundaryoroutsideofthenetwork.AllowingstationswithCC's0.80wouldgreatlyincreasethecoverage
anditmaybenecessarytoincludeislandstationsforsomeeventlocations.Here,wewanttotestournew
procedurewiththehighestqualitydata,seeAppendixBforthedetailsoftherelocationmethod.
[12]InFigure8awedisplay138eventswithrelativelygoodstationcoverage.Theinversionsfortheother19
eventsprovedunstable,whichismainlycausedbypoorazimuthalcoverage,as18ofthemoccurredbefore
2000andhavemaximumazimuthalgapslargerthan180,wheretheaccuracyinobtainingtheSCSN
locationsiswithin3kmformostoftheeventsunlessthelargestazimuthalgapisover120.Theerror
estimatesgrowaccordinglyasdisplayedinFigure8b.

relocations(redmechanisms)areontheedgeofthenetworkandprobablybadlylocatedbybothapproaches.
Therearesomeeventsinsidethenetworkthathavesignificantdifferencesinlocation,suchasthecircled
eventinred.TheeventwithIDof9165761at(34.56,241.1)isanexamplewheretheSCSNreportsadepth
of25.7kmwhileCAPyieldsadepthof7.8km.Itappearsthatthedepthdifferentialsarerelatedtosomeof
thesemislocations.ThiscanbeseeninablowupoftheHectorMineSequence.Nearlyalloftheeventssouth
of3435haveveryshallowdepthestimatesintheSCSNcatalog,seeAppendixA.Mostoftheseevents
movedsouthalongthefault.TheseeventsaremostlyearlyaftershocksandsomewhatnoisyonthePwave
onsetsasdiscussedby Haukssonetal. [2002]andwillbereexaminedwithrespecttodirectivityandfault
zonedamageinfutureefforts.
4.FastSourceEstimationWithSparseStations
[14]TheaboveresultshavedemonstratedtheeffectivenessoflocatingearthquakeswithCAPmechanisms.
However,thereremainsthequestionabouttheminimumnumberofstationsneededtoensureanaccurate
mechanismandlocation.Inthissection,wedemonstratetheimportanceofazimuthalcoveragewhichisbest
displayedinpolarcoordinates.Here,wecomparethemechanismandlocationoftheChinoHillseventasa

the3mechanismparameters,0.05inMw,1kmindepthand2kminhorizontallocation,seeFigure10
andFigureS1oftheauxiliarymaterial.Thus,eightsourceparametersarereliablyobtainedfollowingthis
procedure.

procedureindeterminingsourcemechanisms,sincebasinrecordsarehardtofitwiththe1Dvelocitymodel

SCSNepicenterlocationandorigintime,theCAPmethodisappliedtothedata,whichhasbeenchosen
basedongoodsignaltonoiseratioandazimuthalcoverage,toperformagridsearchforthebestmoment
tensorsolutionandcentroiddepth.Timeshiftsofsurfacewavecanthenbeusedlatertoderivethecentroid
horizontallocation,usingtheempiricaldelaymapsoranyotherpathcorrectionsasdiscussedinthenext
section.Thefactorsthataffectthestabilityofthisprocedurearemainlyintroducedduringthemechanism
inversionprocess,sincereliabletimeshiftsrelyontheaccuracyofthemechanism.Whentheazimuthal
coverageispoororthestartingepicenterlocationand/ororigintimeisoffbytoomuch,theinversioncould
easilybebiased.Consequently,inpoorazimuthalcoveragecasesthemechanismanddepthsearcheswillnot
converge.Thoseshouldberatedaspoorinversionsandbereviewedlateronbyanalysts.Analystcanfix
theseproblemstosomeextenteitherbyadjustingthetimewindowand/orincludingmoredatainthe
inversion.Similarproblemswillarisewhenthismethodisappliedtootherregionsintheworld,especially
wherewedon'thaveanetworkasdenseasintheSouthernCaliforniaregion.Fortunately,pathcorrections
andbetter1DvelocitymodelcouldbeobtainedwiththecommonlyemployedPASSCALexperiments[i.e., Zhu
etal. ,2006].Sparsenetworkcapabilitieshavebeendemonstratedtobeworkingbuttheydorequiremore
carefulreview[ Tanetal. ,2006].WiththenewlydevelopedASNtechnique,thiskindofpathcorrections
couldbeachievedinanindependentwaywhichwillbediscussedinthenextsection,alongwiththediscussion
of3Dvelocitymodels.
5.Discussion
[18]Wehaveintroducedanewmethodforrapideventassessmentinwhichwecanusetheinitialshortperiod
sourcedetectiontotriggertheCAProutineasproposedby ZhuandHelmberger [1996],andproducea
centroidsolutionbyalsorefininglocationusingadelaymap.Thisestimatecanbefurtherrefinedby
performingajointlocationwithPwavepicksorusing3Dmodelingincludingnondoublecouplecomponents
[ Liuetal. ,2004].Thelattersourcecomplexityshiftsthesurfacewavesandthustradesoffwithlocation.We
willbrieflyreviewthisfeaturealongwithrefinementsinpathcorrections.
[19]Thebasicproblemofconstructinga3Dmodelwithuncertainearthquakesourceinformationandlocation
isaddressedby Tapeetal. [2009].Thus,wecaninvestigatesomeofthepatheffectissuesbyanalyzing
artificialdataor3DsyntheticsfortheChinoHillseventalongwithcomparisonsfromtheASNanalysis.In
short,weuse3DSpectrumElementMethod(SEM)syntheticsasobservationsandperformtheCAPsearch
ontheserecords.InFigureS2oftheauxiliarymaterial,wepresenttheresultsofusingsyntheticsfromthe
SCECCommunityVelocityModel4(CVM4)[ Komatitschetal. ,2004]andamorerecentmodelby Tapeet
al. [2009]labeledSCECCommunityVelocityModelHarvard(CVMH)forthesamestationsusedin
determiningtheChinoHillssolutions.Forthistest,weusedasimilarmechanism(292/60/137/14.2
km/5.37)forstrike,dip,rake,depthandmomentmagnitude,reportedbySCECingeneratingthe3D
synthetics.TheinversionofthesesyntheticsproducednewbutsimilarmechanismsthataredisplayedinTable
1.ThefitsatthevariousstationsandshiftsareexpressedinspiderdiagramformasgiveninFigure11.Note
thattheCAPinversioncanfittheCVM4syntheticsbetterthanthedataforour100stationcollection.The
surfacewavedelaysforCVMHareconsistentwiththoseobtainedfromthedataasdisplayedinFigure11b.
However,thereisaproblemwithmodelingtheCVMHsyntheticsalongpathstothenorthwestsincethesefits
aretoopoortobemeaningful.Thisisexpectedsincethesepathsareindeedcomplex,crossingseveral
basinsandmountainridges.NotethatthebasinstationshavebeenremovedbecauseoflowCC'sforsource
considerationinthe1Dinversion.Obviously,thesyntheticsfromthe3Dmodelfittheserejectedstationbetter
thanthosefromthe1Dmodelaspointedoutby Komatitschetal. [2004].However,theirresultsaredifficult
tointerpretinthattheydisplaythe1Dsyntheticsnotshiftedandtheir3Dsyntheticsshiftedbysomeamount

notlisted.ThecomparisonofshiftsinthedataversusCVM4resultsinFigure11isamorerealisticindicatorat

hardrocksites,assuminghighCC'sareindicativeofsuchsites.InFigureS3oftheauxiliarymaterial,we
displayacomparisonofpathstothenorthwestwheretheCC'sarelargeenoughtoallowtheiruseinsource
inversion(CC's>0.8).Mostofthesesitesaresituatedonrelativelyhardrock(Figure1)butcouldbeeasily
contaminatedbybasinedgeeffects[ Tapeetal. ,2009].AgainthefitsarebetterforCVMHsyntheticsand
agreequitewellwiththedata,whereasthemodelingofCVM4syntheticsareseriouslylate.Notethatwhile
the1DsyntheticsdonotfitmanyoftheobservedwaveformsforbasinstationsinFigureS4oftheauxiliary
material,the3DsyntheticsforCVMHdowell.Thisisagoodmodelandcanbeusedtoretrieve1Ddelaysor
useddirectlyinasearchforrefinedsourcerecovery,althoughitistimeconsumingin3D.Notethatifthe3D
modelsareaccurate,weshouldbeabletoreplacethedatawith3Dsyntheticsandobtainthesamedelaysas
giveninFigure11a.Thisseemstoworkasdemonstratedabove.However,themodelreliesonassumed
sourcepropertieswhichcouldbeeasilybiased.

6.Conclusion
[23]WehaveinvestigatedapossiblerealtimesystemforSCthatwoulddeterminelocalcentroidsolutions,
witheightparametersincludingmechanismparameters,depth,moment,coordinatesandorigintimeandwith
fullCMT'scontainingnondoublecouplecomponents.Thefirstfourcanbedeterminedbyfittingasetof1D
syntheticsstoredona1kmgridwiththeCAPmethodology.Next,thetraveltimelagsfortheLoveand
RayleighwavefitscanbecomparedagainstanothertableormaptorelocatetheinitialPwavelocationto
bettermatchthe10ssurfacewavearrivals.WehaveconductedadetailedtestontherecentChinoHills
eventusingcorrectionsderivedfrompastearthquakes(empiricalcorrection),fromAmbientNoiseanalysis,
andextractedfrom3Dmodels.Thesemethodsyieldcomparableresults,validatingtheapproach.Wealso
demonstratedtheabilitytolocateoverahundredeventswithlocationsnearthosefoundbySCSN,exceptfor
estimatesofdepth.Thedifferenceswillbepursuedinfutureefforts.
[24]Inconclusion,itappearsthatpatheffectsforacriticalnumberofstablepathscanbeestablishedina
complexgeologysuchasSCwherethepredictedlagofRayleighwavesandLovewavescanbeestablished.
Althoughwehavedemonstratedthisatrelativelylongperiods,10s,themethodcanprobablybeeffectively
automatedandcanbegeneralizedtoshorterperiodstoparticularlysimplepathsfordetailedsource
characterizationasdiscussedby Tanetal. [2006].
