Dear Parents/Guardians,

As previously mentioned, the Year 5 Geography Unit for this term

focuses on the impacts of flooding on local beaches. In order to
provide students with a first hand experience of the impacts of
flooding on local beaches, a field trip to Putney Beach, Great Keppel
Island has been scheduled. Students will participate in three
activities during this field trip where they will explore the impacts of
flooding on Putney Beach. The three planned learning activities are:

Interviewing local residents to learn about the impact of

flooding events on their local beaches and their lives.
Completing a beach survey to identify and classify items
washed up on Putney Beach following the recent flooding
event.
Learning about strategies and practices to prevent further
erosion on Putney Beach from an Engineer of the Livingstone
Shire Council who will be attending this field trip.

The Year 5 class will travel by bus to the Keppel Bay Marina where
we will be met by staff from the North Keppel Island Environmental
Education Centre, who will provide transport to and from Putney
Beach. Two staff members from the North Keppel Island
Environmental Education Centre will remain with us for the duration
of our time on Great Keppel Island, where they will assist students in
completing the planned learning activities.

Details of the excursion to Putney Beach, Great Keppel Island are

outlined below:

Date: 10th May 2017

Time: Students will need to arrive at school by 7:45am for
an 8:00am departure. Students will arrive back at school at
5:00pm.
Cost: $30 includes return bus fare and transfers to and
from Great Keppel Island.
What to Bring: Students will need to wear full school
uniform, which includes sun safe clothing, a hat and closed in
shoes. Students will need a water bottle and packed lunch.
