Its difficult to picture Mark Dan-
tonio or Tom Izzo as young children in
tears. But their mothers remember
those days, those instances of vulner-
ability.
Nothing humanizes Michigan
States football and basketball head coaches more
than hearing their mothers describe them as chil-
dren and then men, always as sons. And then hearing
Izzo and Dantonio, both in their early 60s, put into
words the deep affection they have for the mothers
who raised them and still guide them.
Both Dantonio and Izzo consider themselves for-
tunate on this Mothers Day to have their mothers
around and in relatively good health. Maryan Danto-
nio is 89. Dorothy Izzo turned 91 Saturday.
It creeps up on me fast, thats for sure, Dorothy
said Friday.
Dorothy, who lives in Appleton, Wisconsin, is
spending this weekend with Izzo and the family at
their cottage, part of a two-week stay that began
with her granddaughter Raquels graduation from
MSU.
