RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS SENT TO SENATOR DASTYARI FROM FOUR CORNERS ON 31 MAY 2017

STATEMENT

As a Senator for NSW its my job to assist constituents with migration matters including liaising with the
Department of Immigration.

My office does this every day and considers every request for assistance.

Since becoming a senator my office has answered over 200 immigration and citizenship enquires from
Sydney's migrant communities including Chinese, Brazilian, Thai, Persian, Indian and Pakistani residents. My
office handles a broad range of constituents' government and policy related queries.

At no point have I ever met or have spoken to any representative from Australia's security agencies about
any matter, ever. Of course I would always act in accordance with any advice I receive from security
agencies.

I was never given any reason to have concerns about Mr Huang up to and including my final contact.

After the events of last year, I spoke to Mr Huang to tell him that I did not think it was appropriate that we
have future contact. I thought it was a matter of common courtesy to say this face to face. Neither my office
or I have spoken to Mr Huang since.

Mr Wong narrowly missed being elected to NSW Parliament on many previous elections. Given the large
Chinese population in Sydney and many Chinese Labor members I have always advocated for greater
Australian Chinese representation as I have with other communities in Sydney.

Fundraising is one of the many responsibilities of the General Secretary of the NSW Branch of the Labor
Party. The NSW Labor Party appropriately meets its disclosure obligations.

Mr Roozendaals employment is a matter for him.

END STATEMENT

Office of Senator Sam Dastyari, Senator for NSW
