Abstract
Harmonics is a sinusoidal component of a periodic waveform that has a frequency equal to an integer multiple of the
fundamental frequency of the system. The use of powers converters and other nonlinear loads in industry has increased the
deterioration of the power system voltages and current waveforms. This Harmonic distortion is considered to be most
significant reason for power quality problems. This paper discuss how to design electrical harmonic system and its simulation
which is used for harmonic analysis.
Keywords: Harmonics, Harmonic distortion, Industries, Simulation, MATLAB ,Power quality.

1. INTRODUCTION
The modern power electronic devices commonly used to describe the switch mode power supply which is found in
personal computers, stereos, televisions, and electronic lighting and adjustable speed drives and static converters. All
electrical devices are prone to failure or malfunction when exposed to one or more power quality problems. The
electrical device might be an electric motor, a transformer, a generator, a computer, a printer, communication
equipment, or a household appliance. The increased use of power electronic devices results in harmonic interference
problems in power transmission or distribution systems. The currents drawn by these power electronic converters and
nonlinear loads have harmonics. Current harmonics present in these nonlinear loads further results in troublesome
problems in AC power lines. The harmonics presence in the power lines results in varied problems, like: greater losses
in distribution; problems of electromagnetic interference in communication systems; and operation failures of
protection devices, electronic equipments. These problems result in high costs and lead to a decreasing in productivity
and reduction of quality in the products or services.

2. OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this paper to design electrical harmonic system and its simulation data collected from
industrial power system.

3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The Single tuned passive power filter consists of series combination of resistance, inductor and capacitor. Figure 1
shows the main components of a typical active power filter system and their interconnections.

Nonlinear load

3.1 Mains Supply
It is a sinusoidal voltage source of rated frequency. Three phase voltage source is formed from three single phase
voltage sources.
3.2 Nonlinear Load:
A set of three single phase loads is connected to a three wire, three-phase AC mains. Each phase load consists of a
single-phase impedance calculated from fundamental instantaneous voltages, currents and phase angles. Harmonic
impedances are modeled as equivalent current sources in parallel with fundamental load impedance This combination
is equivalent to generally used nonlinear loads. MATLAB/SIMULINK model of Non- Linear load phase A is shown in
Figure 3.

6. CONCLUSION
From the simulation, it is observed that actual system harmonic data is same as simulation data. So this simulation
data is useful for MATLAB modeling, simulation and design of electrical harmonic filter.
