Quiznos reopens with new management

Many of you may have noticed the Quiznos on Douglas Bou-
levard has been closed. When we made a call to the store, there
was a message saying that they would reopen in mid to late July
with new management and renovations. So once you receive this
very magazine, they should be open or will be reopening soon.
The company specializes in offering toasted subs, although
they may be served untoasted at the customer’s request. It is the
second-largest sub sandwich shop chain in North America, after
Subway. There are over 4,000 shops located in the United States,
300 in Canada, and 100 more scattered across the world.
In March 2009, Quiznos began offering a new product called
the “Toasty Torpedo”. The sandwich, on 13 inches of ciabatta
bread, cost $4. A smaller, 8-inch version, the “Toasty Bullet”, was
introduced in July 2009 and cost $3.
On January 1, 2010, Quiznos released two new salads; the
Spicy Asian Chicken and the Taco Salad.

WADCS now hosting concert auditions
The West Atlanta/Douglas Choral Society (WADCS), Inc. is hosting
their 2010 - 2011 Concert Season Auditions from now through
September. The 2010 - 2011 seasonal concerts celebrates and
affirms both their third decade and twenty fourth concert season of
successful programming and community service as the longest and
largest serving chorale in the area representing Douglas County
and West Atlanta.
The first official rehearsal will be held Tuesday, September 7
at 7:00pm. Seasonal auditions attracted eighteen new singers
which enhanced this past concert season on an exciting note.
Several new auditionees are being scheduled now during the early
Spring/Summer auditions for the upcoming concert season. For

Cultural Arts Council names 2011 Board
The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County,
Inc. was pleased to announce the 2011 Board of Directors
elected during its annual membership meeting on June 17th
at the Cultural Arts Center. Board officers for next year are:
Robby Pope, President; Jerry Leath, Vice-President; Nancy
Collins, Treasurer; Linda Britt, Secretary; and Allen Culpepper,
Immediate Past President. The 2011 Board members include:
Diane Daniel, Mariana Depetris, June Keen, Sidney Miller,
Denise Overfield, Mack Porter, Suvess Ricks, Rochelle
Robinson, Marcita Scharnhorst, Jamile Sims, Bob Smith,
Lorraine Tully, and Gregory Williams. Appointed by City
Council and the County Board of Commissioners respectively,
John Schildroth and Ray Martin also serve on the Arts Council
Board as City and County liaisons.
“We are delighted to have such a strong, committed Board
of Directors again this year at the Cultural Arts Council,”
stated outgoing President Allen Culpepper. “The 2011 Board
represents the best of our local community leadership, and
each member has committed their time and expertise to serve
CAC’s mission to provide high quality cultural programming
for residents of and visitors to Douglasville and Douglas
County. Their commitment, during these difficult times of
economic downturn, is inspirational. I look forward to working
with them next year.”

added, “This is a great Board of Directors, diverse and
representative of so many important parts of our community.
We have strong corporate leadership with Marcita Scharnhorst
and Bob Smith returning to the Board – and Greg Williams

represented with leaders like Diane Daniels, Jerry Leath and
Lorraine Tully. Education, a major focus of our outreach, is
particularly well-served with the talents of June Keen, Denise
Overfield and Suvess Ricks as well as that of teaching artists like
Mariana Depetris and Mack Porter. Of course, it is especially
wonderful to see a continuity of leadership at CAC. In fact,
we now have a second generation of support and leadership
– Robby Pope, President of the 2011 Board, is the son of the
CAC’s founding President, Virginia Pope who served 24 years
ago in 1986. Such a legacy of ongoing dedicated support
is very heartening in the face of the challenges I know the
Cultural Arts Council will face in the coming year.”

est thing you will ever have to achieve both mentally and physically

The ability to ‘enchant’ an audience with your performance stems
initially from good technique. As Raymond Lukens puts it “good
dance technique allows the maximum output with the minimum ef-
fort”. The continued application of that technique allows the dancer
not to concentrate on where everything is placed, held, pulled-up
or aligned as that becomes a muscle memory, but rather enables
the dancer to move within the music, interpreting the rise and fall,
the subtleties, the nuances of each phrase and sometimes of an in-
dividual note to provide an experience for the audience. For a rare
one or two this ability is innate, for most it comes as a result of re-
leasing ourselves to listen through the music not just with it. What
does the music make you feel? What are images that come to mind
when you hear that piece, and these may be either realistic such
as raindrops, leaves being scattered or a thunderstorm, or may be

Since our pets can be most appealing and down right cute to pho-
tograph as our special subjects, we need to know how to get good pet
photographs. Here are a few tips and tricks that will allow you to get
great animal photographs. You likely have already discovered that it is
nearly impossible to get a pet to pose for you. These tips will help you to
get the animal’s attention and take better candid photos of your pets with
proven results from my history and experience of photographing our furry
friends.
The most important tip for anyone photographing animals is to be pa-
tient. Expect to spend time getting a great image of your special pet. PA-
TIENCE, PATIENCE! Remember that the animal has no idea what you are
trying to do or to get him to do, so your only choice is to ‘set him up’ to get
his attention. You might begin by tempting your dog with his favorite rub-
ber bone, or give your cat her furry catnip toy. You’ll have a few short mo-
ments to photograph your pet before he wants to wander off because as
you know, they have very short attentions spans, much like small children.
To get your pet’s attention, try rattling a marble in a small can, whistling,
a squeaky toy, or making other unusual sounds. Move the sound source
around to get one or more animals to look in the same direction at once
for a portrait. Use a favorite treat as a reward, or find someone to help to
entertain your pet as you snap the pictures. As with any well-composed
photograph, remember to select uncluttered backgrounds, and move in
as close as you can to focus attention on your subject. Get at the animal’s
level, even if that means crouching or lying down on the floor to get the
shot. For memorable, even award-winning pictures, try putting two differ-
ent species in the same photograph. Photograph cat and dog “buddies,”
a kitten and a stuffed tiger, and young child and a puppy. Shoot pictures of
them inspecting each other, playing, or sleeping together.

Local resident forms ‘Marie’s Village’
After the devastating earthquakes rattled the grounds of the al-
ready poverty stricken island of Haiti, Marie Adam got the push she
needed to follow through with her dreams of opening an orphan-
age.
Being born and raised in Haiti, Marie immediately knew the earth-
quakes and the aftershocks that followed would have a tragic impact
on the victims, both young and old. With news of the many now
homeless and parentless children roaming the dangerous streets,
she got an even bigger wake up call. It was time to stop hoping and
wishing for this orphanage to come into fruition.
Despite her many attempts to get the ball rolling, she would now
have to call on her determination, faith, and resources to turn this
catastrophic event into a positive outcome. She carefully selected a
team of creative individuals to help her in achieving this goal. To-
gether they are working to build not just an orphanage but an institu-
tion that will provide a future for these unfortunate victims.
It was only appropriate to name this foundation “Marie’s Village”
as it will be a place where these orphans are embraced and provided
an adequate education, health structure, extracurricular activities to
enhance their minds and better their lives. Marie and her team know
they cannot do this alone, and so for this reason they are reaching
out to seek the help and donations they desperately need. In light of
the situation they are not the ones in need, the children in Haiti are.

Soldiers’ Angels preparing now for Christmas
for the Troops
The Georgia Soldiers’ Angels 2010 Christmas For The Troops
Project is under way, preparing to send Christmas stockings to 5000
Georgia soldiers deployed in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan
during the holiday season. For the sixth year, they would like to invite
Georgia citizens and the business community to join them in con-
tributing the funds and items needed to bring the joys of the holiday
season to our brave military troops overseas. Both monetary and
donations in kind are accepted. The most needed items as donations
in kind are individually-wrapped toothbrushes, lip balm, travel-sized
hygiene products, new ink pens, and pocket-sized note pads.
Monetarily, just $5 buys the contents of one full stocking, $10 buys
two, $25 buys five, etc. Soldiers’ Angels will then get them shipped
overseas and into the hands of an American hero this Christmas.

The silver swingers Dance Club

to pregnant women
The Pregnancy Resource Center Medical
Clinic offers help and hope to women who
may be dealing with an unplanned preg-
