Unit 1: Family
1. Look at Andrews Family tree. Complete the sentences with the words below.

My names Andrew. Ive got one (1) sister. Her name is Claire. Ive got one (2) brother. His names Jon. Hes a
student. My (3) mothers name is Anna and shes a teacher. My (4) fathers name is Simon and hes a doctor.

Watch Out!
Use the contraction s in spoken English.
Ex. My names Andrew. My name is Andrew.
Explanation: We use contraction if we want to shorten one or two words.
Contraction uses an apostrophe ().
Ex: Shes a Korean student. Shell take IELTS exam next month.

3. Rewrite the text in Exercise 2 to describe your family.


Answer: My names Bia. Ive got two sisters. Their names are Maria and Leonora. Maria is a student while Leonora is
a housewife. My mothers name is Teresa and shes also a housewife. My fathers name is Tirso and hes an
engineer.

4. Listen and repeat each word. The words below use the phonetic alphabet. This shows you how to
pronounce the words. Can you pronounce the sound?

Answers: I would say I am friendly, happy and funny. I am friendly because I love meeting new friends and talking
with them. I can also describe myself as funny and happy because I can make people laugh easily using my jokes
and antics. And whenever I make them laugh, I am happy.

7. Complete the description below with personality adjectives from Exercise 6.

1. My mother understands new things quickly. Shes very clever.


2. My father is very bossy. He tells me what to do every day.
3. Im confident because I believe in my ability. For example, Im good at speaking English!

she is home from work. She always makes me laugh because of her jokes. She is friendly so whenever she is having
a party, a lot of people come.

Possessive adjectivedenotes ownership to a noun.

11. How would you describe your family? Read the description of Antonys family. Listen and complete the gaps
with the words you hear.
My family? Well, were a big family actually. (1) Our house is large! Ive got five brothers. (2) Their
names are Carlos, Gino , Luca, Alex and Marco. Carlos is 14 and hes the youngest. Hes good

Answer: My fathers name is Tirso. He is a fifty years old. He is a retired engineer from Qatar. He
worked there twenty years. While he was working there, he goes home every Christmas.

3. Who do you look like in your family? What is his/her name?


Answer: In my family, I look like my mother. A lot of people said that we have the same appearance. We
have the same eyes and shape of face. I also inherited some of her personalities. She is also calm and
funny.

4. Have you got a pet? What is its name?


Answer: Last year, I had a pet. Its name is Bubbles. It doesnt grow tall because it is a shih tzu. Every
morning we run together at the park.

5. Who makes you laugh in your family?


Answer: My younger sister makes me laugh. I laugh whenever she tells me funny stories. We also have
the same interests. We both love eating spicy and sour foods. We also love watching movies.

6. Is someone in your family bossy?


Answer: My father is bossy. He always disciplines us. He always tells us the right thing to do.
Sometimes when we dont listen to him, she shouts at us. He says he is only doing that to prepare us
for the future.

Answer: Im from the Philippines. It is located in Southeast Asia. It is a hospitable country, there are
lots of helpful and friendly people. It also a good tourist destination because there a lot of beautiful

Answer: No I dont have. We are only 5 in the family. My parents, my two sisters and myself. My
two sisters have their own families.

3. What does your mother do?


Answer: My mother is a housewife. She always takes care of us ever since we were kids. She
always disciplines us to be responsible. I love it whenever she cooks my favorite meal.

4. Do you live with your family?


Answer: Yes I still live with my family. In our country, most of the people still live with their family
until they graduated and have their own job. I also dont want to leave them unless I already have
my own family to take care of.

Answer: I am a college student. I am taking up Chemical Engineering and I am now on my fifth
year level. After I graduate, I will take the licensure exam and find a job.

while Teresa has her own family. Teresa and her family lives in Las Vegas while Leonora and I stay
with our parents.

Answer: Everyone is important in my family. My parents are important because my father works
hard to provide our needs while my mother takes care of us. My sisters are also important because
they always help me whenever I need them.
