Problems on Fluids:

Density:

1. A house brick is 23cm long, 10 cm wide and 7cm high. Its mass is
3.38kg.What is the bricks density?
2. The radius of a hockey ball is 36mm and its mass is 140g.what is its
density?
3. Estimate the mass of air in this room.(density of air=1kg/m 3)
4. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, consists of 70% by volume of copper
and 30% by volume of zinc.
Density of copper = 8.9 103 kg m3 density of zinc = 7.1 103 kg m3
(i) Determine the mass of copper and the mass of zinc required to
make a rod of brass of volume 0.80 103 m3 .
(ii) Calculate the density of brass.

Upthrust in fluids:

5. Estimate the height of Earths atmosphere.

6. A golf ball has a diameter of 4.2cm.if a golfer hits it into a stream, what
upthrust does the ball experience when it is completely submerged?
(assume density of water=1000kg/m3)
7. A giant garbage barge on New Yorks Hudson River is 60m long and
10m wide. What depth of the hull will be under water if it and its cargo
have a combined mass of 1.5x106 kg/(assume density of Hudson river
water=1000kg/m3)
8. Calculate the density of the hot air in a balloon floating at a fixed
height close to the ground. The density of the cold air is 1.4kg/m 3.The
total mass of the balloons fabric, gondola, fuel, burners and occupants
is 700kg, and its volume is 2500m3.
9. A steel sphere of diameter 2.7cm is immersed in oil of density
900kg/m3.Find the resultant force on the sphere at the moment it is
released.
