CANADIANS HOLD THEIR OWN AT VIMY RIDGE

Vimy- On April 9th,1917 the long

planed battle at Vimy Ridge was
carried out. After weeks of
training, tunnelling, and
preparations, our boys had finally
went over the top. Under the
cover of a creeping barrage, like
they had trained for weeks, they
over ran the Huns trenches. The
Huns where taken by surprise as
our soldiers swiftly swept over
No-Mans-Land and into their
trenches, achieving their first
goal by 6:25 AM. A mere 35min
later, they reached their second
goal and at 9:00 AM they had
reached the third goal. They paused just long enough for a machine guns
and a fresh brigade to move up before they secured their final goal. After
eight grueling hours of bloodshed, mud, and mangled bodies, The Canadians
had reached their final position. In just eight hours our boys had done what
the French had been trying to do for months and lost 150,000 soldiers doing.
Those eight hours are the greatest hour for us in all the Great War. Victory
did not come without a price, for in the end, the Canadian corps have
suffered 10,602 casualties, 3,598 fighters of freedom were killed by the Hun,
and 7,004 were wounded of the 30,000 troops and six squadrons of planes
that were at their disposal. The Victoria Cross has been awarded to these
four Canadian soldiers; Private William ia Milne of the 16 th Battalion, Lance-
Sergeant Ellis WellwoodSifton of the 18 th Battalion, Private john geoge
Pattison of the 50th Battalion, and Captain Thain Wendell MacDowell of the
38th Battalion, for their bravery in this battle.
