Teacher Lesson Preparation

Graduated Difficulty Handouts and Grouping of discussion groups

Activating Strategy (for example: Hook/Mini-Lesson/Warm-Up/Connection to Prior Learning)

Opening: Students will begin class by conducting a 20 minute recorded discussion on the novel
Candide.

(Prior Learning: Students will have read Candide and will be able to evaluate the authors
perspective on various thematic concepts.).

Mini Lesson: I will begin class by explaining the instructions for the recorded small group
discussions. Students will conduct a 20 minute discussion on the novel, and its connection to the
modern society.
I will then introduce students to the gradual release activity by giving each of the following activity
options that correspond with each of the four DOK levels. I will distribute the DECIDE graphic
organizer and explain that the students will be in charge of choosing the activity that is most
appropriate for themselves. They will use the DECIDE organizer to help make the choice.

Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology

Student Work period:
Students will spend the student work period working one of the four activities. I will wdvise students
that if they finish early they will need to move to the next activity because it was too early for them.
Level One- SOAPSTONE Graphic organizer and Rhetorical Precis

Level Two One-Pager (AVID Style) with level 2 DOK questions and activities.

Level Three- Write and extended response (3 paragraphs) analyzing Voltaires argument about
optimism and why evil exists in a world created by a benevolent god. You must properly integrate
quotations in support of your analysis. It would certainly help to reference the examples of Voltaires
rhetorical style you highlighted while reading Candide. Avoid mere paraphrase or summary of the
plot.

Level Four- Using, Voltaires biting satirical style as a model, create your own satirical short story or
poem criticizing any issue, institution or belief in Modern society. Your piece must include at least 3
of the 4 satirical techniques.

Closure:
Students will complete a sum it up Ticket out the door activity.

This lesson in itself will help me gather formative data about how students view their strengths and
weaknesses in my course and will help me decide where I can push students and what skills students
lack.
