“When the driver of the tractor was ap-

he struck that haybine.”

During the week of June 19, a num-

ber of residents called the Town office,
and EPCOR about a water testing com-
pany called H20 canvassing the town.
A representative from the company
was going door to door telling resi-
dents they would like to test water
quality and hardness.
A few of the residents who called in
indicated the company was acting on
behalf of the town.
“The Town and EPCOR have not
hired this organization to provide wa-
ter testing services. This is an unsolic-
ited sales effort by this company and
residents should use ‘Buyer Beware’ ef-
forts in determining if they would like
to have their water tested,” said Jesse
Parker, Director of Engineering and
Operations for the Town of Strathmore.
Parker said water testing is performed
throughout the Town by EPCOR, and is
a requirement of Alberta Environment
Approval to operate waterworks sys-
tem.
Senior Peace Officer Gary Abel
looked into the company and found
out the salesman was from Star Indus-
tries in Calgary.
“When I called them last week they
claimed they had only one salesman
working the Strathmore area and he
could not possibly be misrepresenting
himself as he had been ‘trained,’” said
Abel.
Abel said he then advised the com-
pany they had not been working with a
valid business license since December
of 2009. He also informed the company
the Town would be reviewing the situ-
ation and discussing whether a license
would be issued.
“This morning ( July 27) they called
me back and apologized for the issues
and will not be in Strathmore again,”
said Abel.

Happy ending for ducks

The Strathmore Fire Department was called in to help with an animal rescue on July
25. Instead of a cat in a tree it was ducks in a drain. A mother duck was walking with
her babies along Westlake Bay when she crossed over a storm drain. Two babies
went down and when she walked back over the drain to see where they went, the
others fell through. Witnesses called the fire department to help rescue the babies.
Fortunately the department had been doing rescue training nearby and Fire Chief
Muir Furzer went to inspect the situation. Four members from the fire hall came to
the rescue. They lifted the grate and one member climbed into the drainpipe with
a cardboard box. Almost immediately the baby ducks came over to the fire fighter 205 - 3rd Ave. - Hilton Plaza
who then carried them to safety. Strathmore, AB
Everyone feared the mother may have abandoned her babies, but when they were 403.934.6044
let loose at the lake, they chirped and she flew over to them.
“It was a really good ending,” said Furzer. All five of the babies followed their mom,

Better than ever

The 53rd annual Rockyford rodeo had crowds filling Main Street for the pancake breakfast followed by the parade on July
24. This was the first year a gunfight had taken place and the crowd got right into the show cheering the actors. The sun
shone bright the entire weekend as people took in the three days of fun filled events. A mini midway was set up for the kids
to enjoy, and snow cones sold more than the cotton candy as a way to help beat the heat.

This Week’s
Featured Lotion
Bellezza
Overindulge your skin in
beauteous, bold bronze
colour and exquisite skin
care found only in this
exclusive Acai Berry Juice-
based Formula.

Skin that is in great shape will tan easier and will

stay tan longer. The indoor tanning lotions we offer
are specifically formulated for use with indoor
tanning equipment. The ingredients in these lotions
work to moisturize your skin and keep it in top form.
Not all lotions are the same. Outdoor lotions that can
be purchased at the department store may have a
purpose somewhere, but not here. When it comes to
cost, it’s important to weigh the benefits - while you
may pay more for the superior lotions here, you only
need to use a fraction of what you would with the
cheap stuff. Ask us which lotion is best for your goals
and your budget.

Spending a weekend playing paintball, while raising money for charity was
a weekend well spent for some. Crosshairs Paintball Ltd lent their course

Saturday and Sunday saw the first,

possibly annual, charity paintball tour-
nament held at Crosshairs Paintball Ltd.
Fred and Joni Maunsell own Crosshairs
Paintball Ltd, and work for Global Train-
ing Centre next door. Every year the
Global Training Centre hosts two main
events to raise money for different char-
ities as well as a few other smaller type
events. All money being raised this year
is going to the Children’s Wish Foun-
dation. Earlier this summer there was
a garage sale, and a car wash, and at
Christmas they adopt families and do
food hamper drives.
“Global has a social committee, and
both Fred and I are on the committee,
and Fred brought up holding a charity
paintball tournament,” said Joni.
For $400, teams were given a beef on
a bun dinner, three games, and all of the
paintball gear they needed. Volunteers
ran the weekend, and there were nine
teams registered.
“We were hoping for 20 (teams), but
we got nine, so we’re hoping for more
next year,” said Joni. There were three
levels of game played, an A, B and C
level, and the Strathmore Rural Fire De-
partment came in second for the B level.
For those who didn’t want to run the
field but still wanted to be a part of the
fun, there was a shoot out. For $5 peo-
ple had a chance to test their marksman-
ship by shooting eight cans off a wood-
en sawhorse. Participants were given
12 paintballs, and the person with the
highest score won a gun set.
The weekend ended with many peo-
ple commenting that they would like to
come back again next year.
“We don’t have the final figures but we
figure it’s got to be close to the $10,000
mark,” said Joni.
