Within Abraham Lincolns speech entitled The Gettysburg Address discussing the need to
bring the nation together as he addresses the civilians and soldiers in the aftermath of the battle, he
shifts from mourning for the fallen to full of hope in order to inspire hope that the nation will not
perish(14).
Lincoln strives for the unification of the nation as well as rally the people to continue fighting. In
order to persuade the people of this, Lincolns speech makes the connotation of the people,by the
people,for the people in order to show/prove that the most important thing are the people. Within the
sentence containing of the people,by the people,for the people Lincoln also uses asyndeton to speed
up the sentence to give what he is saying importance and meaning. As he states slightly before the
quote, Lincoln is connecting the government to the people because we are a democracy.
Lincoln's speech The Gettysburg Address is very similar to the speech I Have a Dream
written by Martin Luther King, jr. The similarities of the speeches are due to the similar situations of the
