Within Abraham Lincolns speech entitled The Gettysburg Address discussing the need to

bring the nation together as he addresses the civilians and soldiers in the aftermath of the battle, he

shifts from mourning for the fallen to full of hope in order to inspire hope that the nation will not

perish(14).

Lincoln strives for the unification of the nation as well as rally the people to continue fighting. In

order to persuade the people of this, Lincolns speech makes the connotation of the people,by the

people, for the people in order to show/prove that the most important thing are the people. Within the

sentence containing of the people,by the people, for the people Lincoln also uses asyndeton to speed

up the sentence to give what he is saying importance and meaning. As he states slightly before the

quote, Lincoln is connecting the government to the people because we are a democracy.

Lincoln's speech The Gettysburg Address is very similar to the speech I Have a Dream

written by Martin Luther King, jr. The similarities of the speeches are due to the similar situations of the

time, With both important leaders attempting to abolish slavery and racial indifference. Both times are

very important historical events in the American history.ADD A WRAP UP SENTENCE
