BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE & ANALYTICS SURVEY

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

More IT Professionals Moving to Cloud for Business Intelligence & Analytics Initiatives
An increasing number of IT decision-makers plan to move to a cloud platform for their organization’s business
intelligence (BI) and analytics initiatives over the next few years, according to an exclusive CIO magazine survey
fielded in May 2010. The survey, conducted among 335 IT professionals whose organizations utilize BI and
analytics technologies, finds nearly one in five respondents (23 percent) expect cloud/SaaS to be their primary
model for BI/analytics within the next 3 years, up from only 7 percent currently. More than half of the IT decision-
makers responding (57 percent) plan to boost spending on BI and analytics in the coming year while 39 percent
anticipate spending to remain flat. Just 4 percent plan to spend less on business intelligence and analytics within
the next year. Accounting and finance (58 percent), sales (37 percent) and customer service/support (34 percent)
are the most commonly cited functions benefitting from the use of business intelligence and analytics initiatives.

Business Intelligence / Analytics Usage Currently Within 1 Year Within 1-3 Years
In house/on premises 93% 89% 77%
SaaS/cloud 7% 11% 23%

Although nearly two-thirds of respondents (65 percent) credit the use of BI and analytics with directly driving a
business process change at their company within the past year, only 13 percent say those initiatives are very
closely aligned with their organization’s business process management (BPM) tools. Small and large company
respondents (47 and 45 percent, respectively) are more likely than mid-market respondents (35 percent) to have
BI/analytics technologies and BPM tools that are at least somewhat aligned.

Methodology & Respondent Profile

Members of the CIO LinkedIn Forum were invited to take the survey between May 14 and May 18, 2010. Results
are based on 335 respondents who indicated their organization is currently using business intelligence/analytics. A
broad range of industries are represented including manufacturing (21 percent), financial services (15 percent), high
tech/telecom and utilities (14 percent), government and nonprofits (11 percent), and healthcare (11 percent).
Company size distribution by annual revenue is as follows: <$100 million: 20 percent; $100 million–$999.9 million:
35 percent; $1 billion or more: 37 percent; nonprofit: 5 percent (3 percent of respondents did not provide an
answer). Sixty-four percent of respondents are the head of IT at their company or business unit. The margin of error
on a sample size of 335 is +/- 5.3 percent. Percents on questions where respondents could select only one answer
may not sum to 100 due to rounding. Not every respondent answered every question.
