How many of you have seen the movie Pitch Perfect? Well I had a friend
teach me the cup song on the weekend, and over the next couple of lessons
were going to learn it! Im going to show you the finished product so you
Introduction know what we are working towards! I want you to follow the rhythm on the
board while I perform the song because thats what we are going to focus
on today. Demonstrate complete song with rhythm pattern and melody.

1. I will introduce the rhythm pattern, first with body percussion.
Body (9 mins) a. Were going to start by learning just the rhythm before we add
the cups. Teach the pattern by using clapping and words.

b. Split the class into two groups.
One half keeps repeating the pattern.
One half maintains a quarter-note ostinato with a chest
beat.
c. Once accuracy is achieved, have the two groups trade tasks.

2. Hand out the cups. Continuing to use the words I will introduce the cup
pattern.
a. Teach the pattern in halves. (2 bar pattern)
Once the first bar can be repeated accurately move on to
the second bar.
Teach only the second bar until it two can be repeated
accurately.
b. Get the students to combine the halves.
Slow the rhythm down significantly to begin. Still continue
to use the words to help the students remember the
subdivision.
Gradually increase the tempo.

4. IF TIME ALLOWS: Performance time! (3 minutes of preparation, 3
minutes of performance)
a. Break into groups of 2.
Groups have 3 minutes to prepare a short performance of
the song. Remind them of the quarter notes (chest beats)
that were used in the beginning and encourage them to

b. Have class sit in a circle with their groups and then move around
the circle for their performances.

Good work today everyone! Remember to keep this rhythm in mind
because next lesson we will be adding on the melody!
