AUTISM/autism spectrum disorder

(requires a medical diagnosis)


A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, non-
verbal & verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior.

Behavioral: inappropriate social interaction, poor eye


contact, impulsive, self-harm, persistent repetition of
words or actions
Developmental: possible learning disability or speech
delay in a child
Cognitive: problems paying attention, intense interest in a
limited number of things
Psychological: unaware of others emotions or
depression
Also common: anxiety, sensitivity to sound, tic

WHAT TO KNOW:
Usually parents notice signs within the first few years of their childs life, but not
always.
The cause of Autism is controversial between genetic and environmental factors.
Early Intervention is key to help students with Autism gain self-care, social, and
communication skills.
It occurs 4-5 times more often in boys than in girls.
About 1-2% of the population is diagnosed with Autism in the U.S. each year.
Aspergers Syndrome is now called an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
