they are made of papernot petals. Master
paper crafter Livia Cetti has been creating
these faux blooms from craft and tissue papers
for many years. In her new tome, The Exquisite
Book of Paper Flowers, she reveals some of her
tricks and techniques so readers can create a
few garden masterpieces of their own. Heres a

CHERRY-BLOSSOM BRANCH
BY LIVIA CETTI
Excerpted from The Exquisite Book of Paper Flowers, by Livia
Cetti Published by STC Craft | A Melanie Falick Book

q
I work with many October brides-to-be who long to have bright,
fresh spring blooms for their weddings. The answer, of course, is to
make the flowers in paper. If you attach them to real branches, you
still get the natural gesture and feel of the plantssomething that
would be nearly impossible to replicate if you were using wire
alone. These instructions are for a small branch, and I suggest you
make five blossoms and two bud balls, but this number can be eas-
ily adjusted to fit the size of your branch.

FINISHED SIZE
Approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm)

WHAT YOULL NEED:

General materials
Scissors
Small zigzag shears
Fringing shears (optional)
Brown floral tape
12-inch (30.5 cm) long bare branch, any type
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks

For petals
Two 3- x 20-inch (7.5 x 50 cm) strips raspberry,
salmon, or fuchsia tissue paper, dip-dye bleached

For cherry-bud balls

20- x 30-inch (50 x 76 cm) sheet raspberry, salmon, or
fuchsia tissue paper

For cherry centers

5 double-headed yellow stamen filaments
2- x 20-inch (5 x 50 cm) strip soft green tissue paper
q

PREPARE MATERIALS:
1 Cut 25, 2- x 3-inch (5 x 7.5 cm) tissue strips. Divide them
into five stacks of five. (Optional: Dip one long side of
each strip in bleach to create a gradient effect. Let dry
before proceeding. Place the petal template on one stack
so the top of the petal is at the bleached edge of the
paper. Trace the template on the tissue and cut it out to
make five petals. Use zigzag shears to trim the top edge
of the petal. Repeat with the remaining stacks to make a
total of 25 petals.

the tape down and around the center, about

next petal alongside the first, overlapping E
their edges by inch (6mm) in a radiating
fashion and encircling the center. Wrap the
base with floral tape. (Note that this layer of
tape and all tape for petals overlaps the layer
underneath.) Repeat with three additional H
petals until the overhead view of the flower
resembles a spiral. Fluff and open the bloom,
adjusting the petals as needed. Repeat with the
remaining petals and centers to make a total of
five blooms, varying the amount of fluffing so
that some blooms are more open than others
for a more natural look.

way to add charming detail to your dcor. Now
that spring has begun to make its arrival, with
delicate buds on trees, bright blades of grass and
unfurling blooms everywhere, artist Laura Clauson
of Mama Bleu Designs says to capitalize on this
magical time with a few decorative surprises.
When you see the signs of spring, it reminds
you that theres beauty after a dormant time,
Laura says. It just fills people up.
Lauras love of gardening and handmade
craft is in her bloodshe and her mother
spent hours sewing and cultivating flowers,
and her grandmother taught her the art of
vegetable gardening. Lauras love of nature
inspired her personalized bags and pillows
featured in her Etsy shop.
When I started sketching ideas, flowers,
leaves and vines were at the front of my mind,
Laura says. I was amazed at how beautiful the
free-motion stitching looked on the fabric.

decorative motif has a history that's as diverse
as its decorative application. Cane-bottom
chairs are said to have originated in China,
though it was in the 1600s in Holland when the
classic octagonal-shaped pattern for chair seats

furniture and associated with opulent style.
Today, the look is synonymous with casual
elegance, and the technique is applied to
everything from glassware and pitchers to trays,
frames and, of course, furniture.

FRENCH COUNTRY COTTAGE
The timeless dcor warms up a guest-cottage kitchen.

HEN FRENCH COUNTRY COTTAGE

W
blogger Courtney and her husband
first saw the tiny guest cottage
behind their house, it had been basi-
cally neglected since the 1940s. Bleak
as it was, the couple saw its potential.
We were so excited to have a
separate house on the property to fix up,
Courtney says. Its an amazing space, with tall
peaked ceilings and original exposed beams.
With 1,000 square feet divided among a
bedroom, bath and living-room/dining area, the
cottage had a rudimentary kitchen. As a
photographer and stylist, Courtney quickly
developed a mental image for the cottage.
I wanted the kitchen in the guest cottage to
be charming, beautiful and vintage-inspired,
she says.

COTTAGE-GARDEN DCOR
Courtney credits the late designer Charles
Faudrees French Country interiors and Rachel
Ashwells Shabby Chic style for her inspiration.
You should decorate with what makes you
happy, she says. You should be comfortable,
and a room should be inviting. As much as
Courtney loves Faudrees bold use of color
and the layering of patterns that are signa-
tures of both designers, she opted for a
white-on-white interior in the guesthouse
due to its small footprint.
Its such a small space that you cant use a
lot of pattern, Courtney says. Instead, she
uses flowers lavishly to lend color and to vary
the seasonal feeling in the cottage.
The couple had big plans for the small
space, such as creating more storage by
reusing what they could to save money. The
tiny cottage also had a few structural quirks,

Courtney had received a $750 challenge grant

to use for the kitchen. Deftly doing the work
themselves with ready-to-finish cabinets,
lumber and recycled materials from other
projects, the couple was able to achieve
Courtneys vision on their tight budget.

WHITE & LIGHT

They paneled the ceiling with lumber
and the walls with beadboard to disguise
their imperfections. Then they applied a
coat of white paint to unify the interior. To
further camouflage the out-of-square
walls, they added a chair rail, which acts
as a display space for Courtneys white
ironstone collection.

you happy.

DIY ARTWORK!
When a shipping snafu left
Deidre with a handful of the
wrong hardware, she decided
to repurpose them into
wall art. She mounted the
lion-head doorknockers
onto doors she removed
from a vintage credenza.
She spruced up each panel
with molding and a coat of
high-lacquered white paint.
I can use them again one
day if I want to make my
own credenza, she says.

In her home-office,
Deidre combined a
variety of unexpected
elements, such as a
cowhide rug, a Victorian
settee reupholstered in a
modern fabric and a mix
of vintage furniture
she made cohesive with
white paint. The result
is a fun, modern
Bohemian feel.

W HEN SETTLING INTO HER CHARLESTON,

South Carolina, townhome, interior designer
Deidre Alexander, founder of Leaf Design Studio,
didnt let the bare walls and dated finishes of her
rental digs prevent her from turning it into the
stylish home/office living space she envisioned.
Instead, she saw it as an opportunity to express
her personal style. With a quirky barrel door to
greet guests upon entering the separate home-
office, it was the perfect place to call home,
although it had its design challenges.
Ive had to work with whats existing, Deidre
says. On the bottom floor, its all white tile, which
is not very aesthetically pleasing, so creating a
flow but delineating the spaces has been a chal-
lenge. I was able to do that through placing rugs

and furniture in the living room, dining room
and kitchen.
Luckily, the homeowner allowed her to repaint
the walls. Some are white, while others were
painted a soft-gray hue, creating a blank canvas for
the fresh colors and patterns in her accessories to
pop against.
My whole philosophy is: A happy home is a
happy life. Deidre says. She achieved it through
her peppy combination of colors, accessories, rugs
and artwork, but keeping the background neutral.

DECORATING A SMALL
SPACE?
Scale down your furniture to fit in simple
arrangements, like this shorter version of a
hallway table paired with a stool instead
of a bench. Scaled down, this arrangement
still functions as an entryway landing area.

DELINEATE SPACES
Knocking down walls and reorganizing the layout
wasnt a possibility. What was doable? Arranging the
furniture so that each living space is separate and
makes sense.
Create a good flow from room to room, Deidre
advises. Think of your visible traffic patterns and
how you would walk around the room if you didnt
have the furniture in the way. Keeping the larger
furniture pieces against the wall is one way to do it.
For example, Deidre set her credenza against a wall
leading into her breakfast room, which marks the
transition from the living room to the breakfast room.
Its also a great spot to set her purse or mail. The
layout needs to accommodate the traffic flow but uti-
lize the space in the best way possible.

FRESH COLORS
Bright accent colors continue a fun and
fresh vibe throughout the home. Deidre
says you should have one jolt of color in
each room to create rhythm. White walls
are great because you can accentuate them
with artwork, she says. Keep the color min-
imal and on smaller things. Juxtaposing a
striking color to a neutral one helps create
balance. Case in point: Deidres yellow wing-
back chairone of her favorite things
balances well against a neutral sofa. As long
as your eye is not jumping around, youre
keeping a good flow, she says.
A flash of red, a burst of yellow, a splash
of orangeaccent colors pop up every-
where, drawing the eye toward Deidres art,
accessories and even the vibrant fabric
patterns on the wooden DIY bulletin board
in her office.
I dont get a lot of light in here, so adding
bright things really helps the mood, Deidre
says, Waking up to cheerful colors is key.

Opposite: In her breakfast room, Deidre

repainted the hand-me-down ladderback
chairs bright yellow. She repurposed antique
cabinetry as a dining hutch by ripping off the
ugly old molding from what was once kitchen
cabinets, using paint thinner on the yellow-
painted window panes and adding new legs.
She then painted it all over with brown on
the exterior and red-orange on the interior.

PERSONAL PIZZAZZ
Deidre put a unique spin on her interior by
mixing and matching colors, patterns and
time periods for an eclectic look. My home
is definitely more shabby-cottage, with
antiques repainted and mixed in with some
more modern pieces, she says.
She also rolled up her sleeves and tackled
various DIY projects to add a personal,
unique touch to each space. An antique sofa
is upholstered with a coral Kelly Wearstler
fabric to make it modern and blend in with
other Ikea furnishings. In her breakfast room,
a white mod-style dining table contrasts
yellow-painted ladderback chairs and an
antique cabinet she repainted in brown with a
red-orange interior. I would say its a good
mix of new and old, Deidre says.
A self-proclaimed impulse shopper, Deidre
fills her home with many antiques and thrift-
store finds from shops in Charleston and is
always scoring great pieces that enhance
her eclectic style. One of her favorite finds is
a painting of a Mexican mariachi band in its
original frame by artist Estacien Etta J.
Benjamin, aka E. Cien.
All of my pieces have been major surprises,
later finding out that theyre worth some-
thing, Deidre says. If it speaks to you and
theres a place for it in your home, grab it.

DIY decor instantly adds spunk
and personality to your interior.
Follow Deidres tips below
on what kinds of pieces to look
for and how to revamp them
with ease.

LOOK FOR GOOD BONES

Antiques and vintage furniture have lines and

shapes you just cant find in modern pieces.
Even if the paint is chipped or hideous, if its got
good bones, its got potential. Just sand it
down, paint it, reupholster it, add new legs or
change the hardware to make it new.

LOOK FOR THRIFT-SHOP ARTWORK

Great-looking works of art can be found in

the most obscure places, including your
neighborhood thrift store. Keep an eye out for
eye-catching pieces, and switch out the frames
and matting for a new look.

LOOK FOR UNUSUAL SUSPECTS

Leftover bits and pieces from remodeling or

other pieces of furniture can be refashioned
into whatever you want them to be. Something
as simple as a doorknocker and doors with
molding can become an art installation if you
use your imagination and some elbow grease.

HAWAII IS THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE
you lounge on a beach, see a few
waterfalls and stop at a shaved-ice
stand on your way back to the
hotel. For Ali McMahon and Parker
Moosman, the laid-back rhythm of
life is home. More than five years ago,
the married entrepreneurs left the
gray drizzle of Seattle for sunshine
and pineapples.
As their boutiques, Olive and
Oliver, flourish, Ali brings her retail
experience to her home dcor.
My background is in store visuals,
windows and interiors, which is
where I fell in love with dcor, she
explains. It definitely has made me a
more detailed person, as evidenced
by the light but purposeful touches
in her home. White walls set the
space along with simple additions,
such as a horseshoe over a doorway
and a few well-placed pictures
many of the frames made by Parker,
a DIY expert. Everything has to be
in the right place, facing the right
way. Were a little picky about it, Ali
says with a laugh.

Since the island has limited

offerings for antiques, Ali finds
unique pieces in unusual places.
An old oar leans against the wall
in the corner of the living room.
Once discovered in the basement
of a previous residence, the oar
always found a niche in their
homes dcor.

CLEAR AWAY CLUTTER

Ali sees simplicity as more effective than
clutter. I really dont hold onto things that
we dont use or need, she says. She avoids
overwhelmingly busy displays and focuses
on developing a subtle allure. The dining
room has minimal dcor: a framed poster
hangs on the wall, ceramic owl sits next to a
bright sideboard, and the corners are clear
and clean. A large window dominates the
space, with the scenic beauty as living art.
The homes architecture encourages a
fresh, spring-like look. Exposed ceiling
beams make the space look airy. Theres no
defined ceiling, which makes the space feel
even bigger, Ali explains. A simple spherical
lamp hangs in the dining room, accentuating
the ceilings height. The furniture is a soft
neutral to avoid distracting visuals; a light
gray couch and white coffee table enhance
the airy atmosphere, letting the wood floor

WHEN YOU THINK OF A HOUSE
that pops with color, you might picture
patterned wallpaper or orange carpeting,
but your homes color can shine without
being overbearing.
When you walk into this cozy home in
the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los
Angeles, you instantly perk up thanks
to the vibrant colors, even though they
arent blanketing the walls and floor. In
fact, the house features a bright and
fresh interior that looks clean but still
has color.

WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE

When interior designer Georgette
Westerman met with the owner, the
intention was to figure out how to
incorporate color with an open furni-
ture floor plan so the house didnt look
cluttered or overdone.
The key to keeping the house light
and airy, Georgette says, is to capitalize
on the homes natural architecture and
white walls while adding touches of
color that dont take the eye too far
away from the existing beauty.
The living room had great windows
and high ceilings, so I wanted to accen-
tuate them because its the first room

you see when you walk into the house, Georgette

explains. They already had white walls, and
although I normally like to splash a little color on
the walls, it wasnt necessary here because the
white added to that airiness. I left it to the furni-
ture and accessories to liven up the space.

LEAVE COLOR TO THE ACCESSORIES

When it came to existing architecture,
Georgette found the living-room fireplace hard
to beat. To me, that was such a focal point in
that room, and we wanted to feature the archi-
tecture and originality of the house, not take
away from it. Therefore, she carried the warm
look of the mantel area into her search for the
right pieces in the room by working with mid-
century-modern style furniture.
The key to knowing whether your color
scheme is done properly is to ensure that your
eye can jump around the room, Georgette says.
In any particular room, youll want to be able
to see a flow of the pop color as you look
around. For example, in the living room, orange
is the color, so we dispersed it evenly. When you
walk in, you see the orange in the wall art and
then on the mantel and then the large pillows
on the sofa. We set out bright white orchids
with little pots that we added orange ribbon to,
and theres orange ribbon on the navy pillows.
Its almost like connect the dots to connect the
color pops.

Once you establish a color scheme for
your initial design room, stick with that
room until youre done before you move
on to the next. You want to have an
overall concept up-front, but its really
important to start a room and complete
it, because when you leave things out, its
a waste of time. You want it to feel
complete before you decorate the next
room in the house.
Once youve made your way through the
house, you can stand back and admire
your design work, as Georgette is able to
do when she sees this home.
Theres a feeling you get when you

SURROUNDED BY FIR TREES AND

situated on a spacious former hazelnut
orchard, this classic cottage near
Portland, Oregon, was originally a
farmhouse built in the 1940s. Today, its
idyllic setting is home to Meg Muschlitz
and her family of six, whose busy
lifestyle begs for a space that is as
flexible as it is charming.
At nearly 3,800 square feet and sitting on
a -acre property, the historic home is
unusually large. The family has maxi-
mized the three-story, four-bedroom
cottage that has historic appeal and
welcoming comfort while also accom-
modating their needs.

VINTAGE-MODERN BALANCE
Upon moving in, the family made a
few key modifications to balance the
vintage-style charm of their home with
modern functionality. They updated
the kitchen and equipped it for two
cooks and added a double sink and
an extra refrigerator and dishwasher
tucked away inside the cabinetry. The

The living room is a serene gathering placed filled

with a variety of textures that give Megs dcor its
signature richness: a sisal rug adds a rustic nod to the
homes history, while plush white-linen sofas add
elegance and comfort. Antiques, such as the old bus
banners Meg framed as art, and contemporary classics,
such as the wrought-iron tagre, add textural interest.

walls on the downstairs level were extended

to add sliding barn doors, sectioning off a
fourth bedroom.
Meg also updated lighting fixtures through-
out the house, intentionally choosing pieces
with more of a modern bent, such as Restoration
Hardware pendants in the kitchen, to contrast
the cottages rustic features. Striking this balance
helped Meg keep the home from looking dated,
while still accenting its historic charm.
The living room takes a similar approach,
where a vintage-industrial style coffee table
and Williams Sonoma armchair and sofa
offset nearby flea market-style elements like
antique signage and a grain-sack chair.

NEUTRALS & NATURALS

Meg keeps the many windows of her
cottage covered simply or not at all because
she loves to bring the lush greenery outside
into her home.
Original dark-oak flooring runs through
most of the house, providing the perfect
contrast for antique pine pieces. Neutral
furniture pieces, including an ecru sofa and
armchair, lighten up the room, while a textural
seagrass rug anchors everything.
Meg added a sisal or seagrass rug to each
room for a grounded, warm feel. These
durable pieces are able to withstand the
wear of everyday life.
Our house is about real life. We want our
home to look comfortable, inviting and lived
in. I like a clean, uncluttered look, but not
perfect, Meg says.

PICKET FENCES
In early American gardens, this fence kept
children in and farm animals out of the door-
yard. Pointed pickets discouraged chickens
from roosting on the fence. In Victorian
times, many gardeners upgraded from
pickets to cast or wrought iron. This makes
both fence types suitable for the style.

THE ARBOR GATE

Before automobiles, visitors tied their
carriage horses at the front gate to the
dooryard. The vine- or rose- shrouded arbor
made it more comfortable for the animals to
wait in the shade or protected from the rain.

WHITE LATTICE
This woodwork is an elegant way to screen
a view or offer privacy without sacrificing
air movement. For outdoor living, or in the
era before air conditioning, this was a
common and welcome building material
and, today, provides a backdrop for many
cottage gardens.

CONTAINERS
The modest lifestyle of cottage gardeners did
not afford luxury items. Inexpensive red clay
flowerpots became the standard of the day.
Homemade wood window boxes were a
popular decoration for simple, functional
homes at minimal cost.

DONT SKIP THE SCULPTURES

Obelisks, orbs and similar architectural
statuary have roots in the English country
manor gardens. Scattered around the garden
near informal plantings of roses, Monrovias
climbing purple Betty Corning Clematis and
eye-catching big ball Alliums, they become
casual accents amid the plants.

a GARDEN ISNT JUST

a space for flowers
it can be a muse, a
sanctuary and a meet-
ing place. For Harlem
Renaissance poet and
social activist Anne
Spencer, it was all three.
Her garden was a refuge and a kind of way to get away from
the issues of the time, Shaun Spencer-Hester, Annes grand-
daughter and director of her historic-home-turned-museum, says.
Restored in 1983 by the Hillside Garden Club, the garden
carries a lot of cultural significance. Located in Virginia, it became
a rest stop for other Harlem Renaissance writers making their long
trek from New York to visit family members in the South and, as a
result, was a breeding ground for social and literary thought.
Today, visitors from around the world are thrust back in time
to when Anne spent her days penning poems outdoors.
Follow these tips from Shaun and Hillside Garden Club
member Jane B. White, who authored a book on the Spencer
restoration project, Lessons Learned from a Poets Garden.

CREATE A HISTORIC COTTAGE GARDEN

MAP IT OUT. Before tackling a project, have a plan that
q

includes research and strategizing. In the case of the Spencer

garden, a 1937 photograph served as a model for the restora-
tion. Information was gathered from remnants of flowers and
structures, photographs, the poetry of Anne Spencer and
memories of Chauncey, Annes son.
It is very helpful to have a landscape plan. Keep in mind that
you dont have to get it all done in one day. It took the Hillside
Garden Club about a year to complete their restoration.
You may have to take it in steps, Jane advises. You may
have to plant trees first or have structures in place firstfenc-
ing, walkways, arbors, pergolaand then you come in with
plants, if necessary.
KEEP STRUCTURE IN MIND. Structure and architectural

COLOR IS IMPORTANT FOR AN OLD LOOK.

Modern gardens incorporate a lot of white,
but Annes was colorful. You can add pops
of color by painting these architectural
elements as well.
q

PLANT YOUR FLOWERS. Once youve

collected your information and have a
general skeleton of the garden, itll be
easier to determine what plants are worth
saving. When choosing new plants to fill in
your design, research period plants to know
what was typically used during the time of
the look you are trying to convey. Roses,
peonies, hydrangeas, anemones and holly-
hock are among few of the various flowers
found in Annes garden.
q

GROOM AND MAINTAIN. To keep a

garden looking fresh, theres a never-
ending list of things to do. Assess the health
of your plants and show them a little TLC.
Maintenance isnt just about staying

graphic artist/print designer Jenna Sue
Diermannto create a vision for transform-
ing the sunroom in her 1,500-square-foot
Florida home.
It has these amazing windows that look
out onto our pool and lake, Jenna says of
the sunroom. I wanted to continue the
water theme inside.
Jenna fixed a sagging wood ceiling and
replaced dated carpeting with gray porcelain
tile. She coated the room in white paint and
soft aqua to mimic the sky. She then outfit-
ted the room with cozy furnishings, nautical
art prints and simple accessories for a mix of
coastal casual with rustic toucheslight,
bright and airy.
Want to achieve similar results? Follow
Jennas tips:

BALANCE PRINTS WITH SOLIDS.

Graphic prints are de rigueur to any
visually interesting design, but there
can be too much of a good thing.
Combine patterns with solids to
achieve balance and to prevent your
motif from looking too cluttered, which
actually can make a room feel smaller.
In this case, solid-colored cushions
allow the graphics on the throw pillows
to speak for themselves. Solid colors
dont have to be boring, either; Jenna
selected cushion covers in a fabric with
a corduroy texture.

DESIGN TIP:
Paint door and window
frames in the primary
color of the room to help
create a seamless and
consistent background. In
this case, Jenna painted
the mullioned-window,
sliding-glass-door pane
white to match the bright,
airy sunroom interior.

KEEP IT LIGHT AND BRIGHT. Jenna

opted for a predominately white
palette with soft layers of tone-on-tone
color. It helps open the space and
keeps that relaxed coastal feel,
Jenna says. It also allows you to
incorporate color using your linens
and accessories.
Jute, seagrass, gently distressed
woods and other natural materials
underscore a laid-back vibe in coastal-
themed rooms. The combination of a
natural-wood coffee table and woven
area rug show how monochromatic
pairings create a well-balanced design.

tempting to design around one
large central living area, creating
separate social spaces within one

You can make freestanding

any size you want from
burlap, polyester or wool felt.
Burlap is inexpensive, but it

FABRIC POTS
Fabric pots are great garden
stretchers that enable you to plant
in areas that have less than perfect
soil, Susan writes. Filled with good
compost and anchored in place,
these planters also make it easy to
plant on slopes. Best of all, there is
no storage problem because, at
the end of the growing season,
you just toss the planter on the
compost pile, plant and all.

NOTE:
The wider the base of the
planter, the less hose you will
have to use for the height of the
sides. When the base measures
about 10 inches (25cm) across,
for example, one 75-foot (23m)
hose will produce a planter that
is about 10 inches (25cm) high
and 16 inches (41cm) across
the top. Decide before you
begin whether you want a
tall, narrow planter or a
wide, shallow one.

connection. You may claim you have a favorite
shade, but the reasoning behind why you are
attracted to it runs deeper. We choose based on
how we feel and, as a result, the colors we paint
our lives with become a form of expression.
For Tricia Guild, interior designer and founder of
Designers Guild, articulating who she is through
her style is based on her color choices. In her
book Decorating with Color, she provides
visual lessons and inspiration
for creating the perfect

which she defines people.

Varying shades of pink soften and
breathe life into the room, while purple
Combine patterns and solids. adds richness and depth.
Incorporating patterns, especially in wallpaper, is an
easy way to introduce color into a room since they
typically contain multiple hues. Combine them with
solids to utilize your color scheme effectively. Find
solids in the same color as your patterns, but only
use them if they are different shades to complement
the design. Using the same shade will make your
space look stale.

Create interesting contrast.

Black and white are a timeless twosome, but dont
shy away from a change of pace. Create contrast by
pairing an unlikely duo, like a bright blue and soft
pink. The dissimilarity in the vibrancies of the two
will spark intrigue. A neutral backdrop with bold
pops of color will have the same effect.

Monochromatic is key. Saturate

your home with varying shades of one color. It will
automatically tie the look of the room together
while providing contrast. Many colors, like purple,
are versatile, so pairing different tints alongside
one another will cast a dreamy yet powerful impact.
The fading look of a gradient is another method of
employing a single family of color.

Break the rules. Disregard any ideas that

restrict you from personal design urges. The look
of your home is an extension of you. Cover your
windowpanes in that neon tint youve been lusting
over. Paint your vents in the same color your nails
are currently sporting.

Add texture. A ton of solid colors can look

lackluster. Textures possess the ability to add
richness and depth. Colors look different on
assorted surfaces, so make sure to indulge on a
velvety throw or shag rug. Plus, itll make your
dcor look more appealing.

Accessorize. The secret to adding color to a

home? Do it through accessories. Inject color with
decorative pillows and rugs. Dont be afraid to get
unconventionalinvest in something bold, such as
a lime-green chair. The stronger the hue, the more
it will energize a room. However, if youre feeling a
little delicate, create tranquility with muted shades
and earthy tones. Nature itself will provide the best
natural color palette, so head to your local nursery
and bring home a new plant friend (or two).

SEVEN MAJOR COLOR GROUPS FEATURED IN
TRICIA GUILDS BOOK DECORATING WITH COLOR
TO HELP YOU CHOOSE YOUR NEW COLOR SCHEME.

BLACK
Timeless and classic, while this color is a nod to
nostalgia when coupled with white, it can also boost
sleekness in dcor and transform grainy wistfulness
into clean, modern lines.

BLUE
The color favored by most boasts nobility and richness.
From lapis lazuli, the sacred stone of ancient Egyptian
gods, to the perfect blue wash of your favorite worn
jeans, the time-honored hue is here to stay.

AQUA
With a color as versatile as it gets, its no wonder
shades of aqua can find peace among cool and warm
colors alike. Barely there or bold, ancient civilizations
used it to symbolize heaven on earth and to encrust
prized possessions.

GREEN
Reoccurring in the natural world, this color symbolizes
earth and growth. Due to its reassuring qualities,
Goethe affirmed green as peaceful and, thus, perfect
for bedrooms. But dont overlook its vivacitythis
hue will glam up any space.

PINK
When we think of pink, we cant help but get
romantic. However, theres more than sensuality
lurking behind the hue. Aware of its authoritative
nature, Argentinas Casa Rosada, a building painted
pink, is where the president resides.

PURPLE
Shrouded in mysticism, purple represents wealth,
wisdom and spirituality. It was the first color derived
from a chemical process in 1856 and has retained its
magical quality since.

WHITE
Despite its colorless nature, white carries a colorful
