he university uses a ten digit university identification number to identify your permanent records, such as

the transcript, registration, grade reports, enrollment certifications, student accounts, etc. This is known as

the university i.d. number.

The university does not disclose the student's i.d. number to individuals or agencies outside Indiana

University except in accordance with the Indiana University Policy on Student Records. For more information

on the confidentiality of student records, visit our link on Public Information and Student Confidentiality.

Students who apply for financial aid are required by federal law to provide a social security number to the

university. While this number is used in the processing of financial aid, it is not the student primary

identification number.

While in most cases, students will be able to complete their business with the university in One.IU by use of

a username and passphrase, there may be occasions when a student id number is required. Students may

obtain their university id numbers by viewing the View My Personal Information page in the Student

Information System (SIS) through One.IU (see directions below) or by bringing photo identification to the

Office of the Registrar.

New students should receive their university i.d. number as part of the admission process.

Students can look up their university i.d. number by following the steps below.

1. Login to One.IU. (See "How do I login to One.IU" in the FAQ.)

2. Click in the Search box and type, student center and press ENTER.

3. Click the Student Center task icon.

4. In the Services & Information area, under the title that says IU Accounts, click on the link that
says Lookup my University ID Number.

5. Find the heading that says Demographic Information.

The first piece of Demographic Information says ID. Next to the word ID is your university ID number.

Whenever using your 10 digit university ID number, include the zeros in front.

The Office of Student Data Management and Access would like to announce the release of an important website dedicated to student data handling and

the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA): https://ferpa.iu.edu. Here you will find helpful information regarding faculty and staff privacy

responsibilities, along with some hot topics, like: handling student information during a crisis, procedures for releasing student information to third

parties, and basic student rights granted by FERPA. Please take some time to read through the information presented in this site, and if you have any

general FERPA questions, you may email us at ferpa@iu.edu.

In order to ensure Indiana Universitys continuing commitment to protecting sensitive data, you may have received an email from USSS Data

Management requesting that you re-affirm your understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act by completing the FERPA tutorial and

short quiz by November 30, 2016. Please note that this is a legitimate university request. The tutorial may be accessed from the ferpa.iu.edu site, or by

searching for FERPA tutorial in One.IU.

If you are unsure as to when you last completed the FERPA tutorial, you can look up this information by

visiting:https://iu.edu/~usssapps/tools/compliance-lookup.

For your convenience, the FERPA tutorials can be found at the links below.

Access

The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of the day the University receives a request for access. Students should submit to the registrar, dean,

head of the academic department, or other appropriate official, written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect. The University official will make arrangements for

access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the University official to whom the request was submitted,

that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed.

The right to request the amendment of the student's education records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Students may ask the University to amend a record that

they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the University official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it

is inaccurate or misleading. If the University decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the University will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of

his or her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a

hearing. After the hearing, if the University decision is not to amend the record, the student has the right to place a statement with the record outlining his or her view on the contested

information.

Right to file a complaint

Students have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by Indiana University to comply with the requirements of FERPA.

Public/Directory Information

This is the right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the students education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure

without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by

the University in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person or company with

whom the University has contracted (such as an attorney, auditor, or collection agent); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as

a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to

review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the University may disclose education records without consent to officials of another

school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. Finally, public information may be released freely unless the student files the appropriate form requesting that certain public

information not be released. This form is available online or from the Office of the Registrar.
