Introduction

Gamuda Berhad was incorporated on October 6, 1976 and was listed on the main
board of Bursa Malaysia on 10 August 1992. It is one of the largest Malaysian
infrastructure companies and has undertaken many projects, both locally and
overseas. For examples, Klang Valley MRT lines, highways, airport runways,
railways, tunnels, water treatment plants, dams, infrastructure concessions and the
development of new townships. Besides the local projects they are developing,
Gamuda has ventured internationally with various civil engineering construction,
infrastructure and property development located in Taiwan, South East and Far East
Asia, Indochina, Middle East and Vietnam.
The one of its major projects was the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel
(SMART) project. Gamuda Berhad was collaborated with MMC Corporation Berhad.
They were constructed 9.7 km of SMART tunnel, it was completed in 2007. The
primary function of SMART tunnel is to divert access flood water from Sungai Klang
and Sungai Ampang to be stored in the storage pond. The dual aim of tunnel also
served as an alternative route of the motorist to travel to and from the city centre.
Nowdays, Gamuda Berhad had 40 years of experience in the construction field. It had
got many awards in this 40 years. For instance, Builder of the Year Award- Malaysian
Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2016, International Achievement
Award, Yen So Sewage Treatment Plant-Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence
Awards (MCIEA) 2015, SMART-Design and Construction Excellence Award,
Institution of Engineers Malaysia and so on. Not only that, MMC Corporation Berhad
collaborated with Gamuda JV awarded the largest portion of KVMRT Line 2 contract
in 2016. The partnership of MMC Corp Bhd and Gamuda Berhad wins the largest
contract for the Underground package of KVMRT Line 2 worth RM15.47 billion.
This is credited to the JVs strength in Underground Tunnelling, proven in the
construction of the KVMRT Line 1, where MMC and Gamuda undertook the design,
construction and completion of tunnels, underground stations and structures such as
portals and escape shafts for the Underground portion.

basic market structure. It is because there are few firms dominate in this construction
and building materials company. These few dominant firms can do their projects
either differentiated or non-differentiated. Besides, the few dominant firms have the
market shared in the oligopolistic market. Thus, the concentration ratio is often
utilized. This measure expresses, as a percentage, the market share of the four largest
firms in any particular industry. In other situations, competition between sellers in an
oligopoly can be fierce, with relatively low prices and high production. This could
lead to an efficient outcome approaching perfect competition. The competition in an
oligopoly can be greater when there are more firms in an industry. For example, the
dominant firms were only regionally based and did not compete directly with each
other.
