Peace Corps Response positions are open to returned Volunteers or U.S. citizens with
significant professional and technical experience.

Project Description
The Global Partnership for Saving Mothers Giving Lives (SMGL) is a United States Government
effort established in 2011 to achieve a 50 percent reduction in maternal mortality in selected
low-resource countries. This ambitious goal is being achieved through the coordinated efforts
of the United States global health platforms including PEPFARs HIV programs, USAIDs
Maternal and Child Health Programs, CDCs Ministry of Health implementation and maternal
health epidemiology, NIHs maternal health research capacity, Peace Corps community-level
capacity, and the Department of Defenses technical and logistical capacity.

To support this whole of government approach in addressing maternal mortality at the


community level, PCR Volunteers will be engaged in a variety of community systems
strengthening approaches including but not limited to:

addressing barriers to the continuum of care from the community level to the district level
and exploring ways to bring the care closer to the women;
address barriers that impede womens access to services from the community to the district
level;
assess cultural impediments to women accessing these services;
assist ongoing monitoring and evaluation efforts by coordinating with M&E; Officers on
managing of data (from the community and facilities) and reporting monthly;
develop success stories for the program.
facilitate development and strengthening of facility level Ministry of Health Staff knowledge
and transfer skills in MCH, IT, supply chain logistics and
collaborate with Ministry of Health and other key SMGL partners in the implementation of
SMGL activities.

Bachelors Degree in related field i.e. Nursing, Public Health, Psychology or Biology
Strong computer skills; MS Office, Excel, social media
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Excellent facilitation skills
Ability to work in a multi-cultural project-team setting
Self-motivated and innovative
Written and oral language competence

Medical Considerations in Zambia

Zambia may not be able to support Volunteers with the following medical conditions:
asthma, including mild or childhood; gastroenterology; insulin-dependent diabetes;
mammography; ongoing behavioral health support; some types of gynecologic support;
seizure disorder; peanut allergies.

The following medication(s) are not permitted for legal or cultural reasons: Adderall, Ritalin
and Vyvanse.

Volunteers who should avoid the following food(s) may not be able to serve: gluten

After arrival in Zambia, Peace Corps provides and applicants are required to have an annual
flu shot, to take daily or weekly medication to prevent malaria, and to receive mandatory
immunizations.
