Lesson idea implementation:


The teacher will introduce the studies of American symbols using the BrainPop video, Martin Luther
King, Jr. Prior to displaying the video, the teacher will ask students questions about Martin Luther King, Jr- Do
you know who he was? What information do you know about Martin Luther King, Jr? Why is he important in
American history? Then the teacher will ask students to remember one new fact about Martin Luther King, Jr
after they view the video.

After viewing the video, students will be encouraged to share the new facts about Martin Luther King,
Jr. The teacher will list the facts on chart paper and/or the whiteboard. If enough facts are not collected to

correlate with the number of students in the class, the teacher will break students into small groups where
they will re-visit the video using the iPads. Each group will remember two more facts for the fact page.

Once compiled each student can select one of the facts about Martin Luther King, Jr. The teacher will
record each student telling his or her fact. The recording will be finalized into a podcast and placed on the
classroom blog for others to enjoy.

Optional extension: Students will repeat the research process on a different American symbol. Using
another BrainPop video, students will create a podcast on that topic.
