DAVIS MOUNTAIN MULE DEER

BY JOYCE HOBBS

Huge ears semaphore a wary, “Stay back!”

Large eyes alertly assess the human intruder.
Velcro nose investigates the extended hand,
disdains the offered dry grass,
seeks the preferred thorn bush.
Wary, willing, greedy,
She accepts a handful of carrots.
Then on dainty hooves,
sure-foots across the park trail
to the shady side of the mountain.
