ABSTRACT:

The youth are our most valuable resource to the country in terms of National
productivity. Majority of the opportunities are grabbed by the urban, elite affluent youth
when compared to rural poverty ridden students. Rural youth even though they may be
gifted and have high IQ most of them do not succeed in Higher education and national
competitive exams.

In the present study, an attempt is made to know the views and vistas of poor rural
students about higher education. A stratified random survey was conducted among
students of three different colleges by floating a questioner. The results were statistically
analyzed and interpreted.

Though the overall attitudes of young people towards Higher education are
similar in many ways, their aspirations and intentions regarding higher education are
strongly influenced by socio-economic background, gender, and geographical location.
The results indicate that Socio-economic background is the major factor in the variation
in student perspectives on the value and attainability of higher education.

INTRODUCTION:
Youth are the most valuable resource to seize the opportunities offered by
globalization. Rural youth though they are innovative and they have creativity, they are
facing many challenges in the present educational system. Most of their parents are
illiterate. Due to poverty and lack of awareness many rural students are forced to join in
work to help their family. Poor Health conditions, malnutrition, lack of parental
education, hampers the all round development of a poor rural student and hinders his
growth in Socio-economic aspects. Most of the rural students do not know how to apply,
prepare, for the national level /higher competitive exams. They do not know how to
utilize the reservation quota. A sort of diffidence prevails in them which are also
responsible for their backwardness.

With such backgrounds through the rural students being bought up to the higher
education, they are not in a position to face further challenges.
The main problem they are facing today is cost of higher education, lack of English
knowledge and communication skills, lack of computer knowledge and lack of analytical
an quantitative skills which are very often asked in the present all most all the exams and
never taught in the college common core syllabus.

Considering all the situations, in the present study an attempt is made to know the
views and vistas of poor rural students about higher education. So that the actual
problems of them can be known and solutions can be explored.

METHODOLOGY:

A stratified random survey was conducted among the undergraduate students of three
different colleges by floating a questioner. Three colleges are selected in Kavali town
they are:1) Jawahar Bharati Degree College 2) Magunta Subbarami Reddy Degree
college and 3) Sri Sai Degree College.
Only degree final year and second year students were considered because they are the
students who are going to join in the higher education in their next step and they may

have better knowledge regarding this. Questioner consists of 15 questions. Some of them

The over all attitudes of rural students towards higher education are similar in many
aspects. Majority opinion is: Higher education should be affordable by all, it must
provide all the knowledge regarding the career plans and must be helpful to reach the
goal which ultimately leads to good position

CONCLUSION:

Though the over all attitudes of rural students are same, socio economic reasons seem to
be the major draw back for their backwardness regarding higher education.

Good career guidance, good counseling, encouragement, providing good English

knowledge ,communication skills and computer skills makes rural students to shine more
and helps to face the up coming challenges.
