THE FIVE PRACTICES AND TEN COMMITMENTS OF EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP

Please read through the article below on The Five Fundamental Practices of Leadership. Please define
each exemplary practice and list the key characteristics/examples for students in each practice.

1. Model Way
Definition: Leaders who care about the way people should be treated and the way goals
should be accomplished.
Key Characteristics:
Finding your voice
Knowing personal values
Setting good examples
Do what you say you'll do
Leading by example
Credibility - foundation of leadership

2. Inspire a Shared Vision


Definition: Leaders believing that they have an opportunity to make a difference. They see
the future and creating an ideal image based on what they see something could become.
Key Characteristics:
Inspire a vision
Envisioning the Future
Exploring new ideas
Calling on others who share the same values
Sharing ideas with like minded people
Setting Goals and Communicating to get people to buy into
your goals
3. Challenge the Proces
Definition: Leaders look for opportunities to change image or the status quo of something.
They look for new ways to improve the dynamics in a group or workplace.
Key Characteristics:
Searching for new ways
Wanted things to grow, change and improve for the better
Experimenting, taking risks
Learn from mistakes
Accept small wins
Innovation - is very important
4. Enable other to Act
Definition: Leaders work on collaboration and team building. They always try to
incorporate and involve others in events. Allowing a team to function effectively.
Key Characteristics:
Show trust and collaboration
Are lenient in giving specific jobs
Want to build groups
Share power
Give others strength
5. Encourage the Heart
Definition: Leaders recognize contributions that individuals make, they keep hope and
determination alive. Accomplishing amazing things through hard work and dedication.
Key Characteristics:
Show appreciation to individuals
Celebrate values
Encourage victories
Create community sense
