Initial Proposal

Name: Angeline Santa Romana

Optical device youre interested in making: I am interested in making a refractor
telescope.
Product outline:
The optical device I would like to create for this project would be refractor telescope.
This telescope uses a bi-concave and bi-convex lens to direct the light to a focal point and refract
to create an image. The objective lens (lens closest to the object) collects the light beams and
focuses them to a specific point in the tube itself. The light meets at a focal point then continues
until they meet at the concave lens. This lens is used as the eyepiece, points the light beams
parallelly to create the image.
Describe what your device could be used for:
This telescope can be used for studying the stars and constellations. It can also be used to
look at the outer space and things that are far away.
Sketch idea:
Use a clearly labelled diagram to describe how your device works.

Light collected at
one point

Create a list of materials you will need and what they will be used for:
Material How it will be used in the device

Bi-Concave lens This will work as the eyepiece.

Bi-Convex lens This will work as the objective lens.

A PVC pipe This will keep the lens in place to be able to create the telescope
itself.
Ray Diagram
Ray diagrams are often to used to illustrate how light travels. Develop a ray diagram for your
product. Remember to be accurate and use a pencil and a ruler!
