Chapter 8 Leadership

1. Define what Leadership is.


- It is the action of leading a group of people or an organization.
- It is the state or position of being a leader.
- It is the leaders of an organization, country, etc.
- Leadership is the ability to not only understand and utilize your innate talents,
but to also effectively leverage the natural strengths of your team to accomplish
the mission.
- Leadership is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the leader's goal.
2. Differentiate the forms of Leadership Styles.
- Visionary. This style is most appropriate when an organization needs a new
direction. Its goal is to move people towards a new set of shared dreams.
- Coaching. This one-on-one style focuses on developing individuals, showing
them how to improve their performance, and helping to connect their goals to
the goals of the organization.
- Affiliative. This style emphasizes the importance of team work, and creates
harmony in a group by connecting people to each other.
- Democratic. This style draws on peoples knowledge and skills, and creates a
group commitment to the resulting goals. It works best when the direction the
organization should take is unclear, and the leader needs to tap the collective
wisdom of the group.
- Pacesetting. In this style, the leader sets high standards for performance. He
or she is obsessive about doing things better and faster, and asks the same of
everyone.
- Commanding. This is classic model of military style leadership probably the
most often used, but the least often effective. Because it rarely involves praise
and frequently employs criticism, it undercuts morale and job satisfaction.
3. Discuss Management and Leadership.
- Managers have subordinates
o By definition, managers have subordinates - unless their title is honorary
and given as a mark of seniority, in which case the title is a misnomer
and their power over others is other than formal authority.
- Authoritarian, transactional style
o Managers have a position of authority vested in them by the company,
and their subordinates work for them and largely do as they are told.
Management style is transactional, in that the manager tells the
subordinate what to do, and the subordinate does this not because they
are a blind robot, but because they have been promised a reward (at
minimum their salary) for doing so.
- Work focus
o Managers are paid to get things done (they are subordinates too), often
within tight constraints of time and money. They thus naturally pass on
this work focus to their subordinates.
- Seek comfort
o An interesting research finding about managers is that they tend to come
from stable home backgrounds and led relatively normal and comfortable
lives.
- Leaders have followers
o Leaders do not have subordinates - at least not when they are leading.
Many organizational leaders do have subordinates, but only because they
are also managers. But when they want to, and following is always a
voluntary activity.
- Charismatic, transformational style
o Telling people what to do does not inspire them to follow you. You have
to appeal to them, showing how following you will lead them to their
hearts' desire. They must want to follow you enough to stop what they
are doing and perhaps walk into danger and situations that they would
not normally consider risking.
- People focus
o Although many leaders have a charismatic style to some extent, this does
not require a loud personality. They are always good with people,
and quiet styles that give credit to others (and takes blame on
themselves) are very effective at creating the loyalty that great leaders
engender.
- Seek risk
o In the same study that showed managers as risk-averse, leaders appeared
as risk-seeking, although they are not blind thrill-seekers. When pursuing
their vision, they consider it natural to encounter problems and hurdles
that must be overcome along the way.
4. Explain the different Leadership Traits
- Tough-mindedness. Good leaders are practical, logical, and to-the-point. They
tend to be low in sentimental attachments and comfortable with criticism. They
are usually insensitive to hardship and overall, are very poised.
- Self-assurance. Self-confidence and resiliency are common traits among
leaders. They tend to be free of guilt and have little or no need for approval.
They are generally secure and free from guilt and are usually unaffected by prior
mistakes or failures.
- Compulsiveness. Leaders were found to be controlled and very precise in their
social interactions. Overall, they were very protective of their integrity and
reputation and consequently tended to be socially aware and careful, abundant
in foresight, and very careful when making decisions or determining specific
actions.
- Emotional stability. Good leaders must be able to tolerate frustration and
stress. Overall, they must be well-adjusted and have the psychological maturity
to deal with anything they are required to face.
- Dominance. Leaders are often times competitive and decisive and usually enjoy
overcoming obstacles. Overall, they are assertive in their thinking style as well as
their attitude in dealing with others.
- Enthusiasm. Leaders are usually seen as active, expressive, and energetic.
They are often very optimistic and open to change. Overall, they are generally
quick and alert and tend to be uninhibited.
- Conscientiousness. Leaders are often dominated by a sense of duty and tend
to be very exacting in character. They usually have a very high standard of
excellence and an inward desire to do one's best. They also have a need for
order and tend to be very self-disciplined.
- High energy. Long hours and some travel are usually a prerequisite for
leadership positions, especially as your company grows. Remaining alert and
staying focused are two of the greatest obstacles you will have to face as a
leader.
- Intuitiveness. Rapid changes in the world today combined with information
overload result in an inability to "know" everything. In other words, reasoning
and logic will not get you through all situations. In fact, more and more leaders
are learning to the value of using their intuition and trusting their "gut" when
making decisions.
- Maturity. To be a good leader, personal power and recognition must be
secondary to the development of your employees. In other words, maturity is
based on recognizing that more can be accomplished by empowering others than
can be by ruling others.
- Team orientation. Business leaders today put a strong emphasis on team
work. Instead of promoting an adult/child relationship with their employees,
leaders create an adult/adult relationship which fosters team cohesiveness.
- Empathy. Being able to "put yourself in the other person's shoes" is a key trait
of leaders today. Without empathy, you can't build trust. And without trust, you
will never be able to get the best effort from your employees.
- Charisma. People usually perceive leaders as larger than life. Charisma plays a
large part in this perception. Leaders who have charisma are able to arouse
strong emotions in their employees by defining a vision which unites and
captivates them. Using this vision, leaders motivate employees to reach toward a
future goal by tying the goal to substantial personal rewards and values.
- Social boldness. Leaders tend to be spontaneous risk-takers. They are usually
socially aggressive and generally thick-skinned. Overall, they are responsive to
others and tend to be high in emotional stamina.

5. Explain the different types of Skilled Leaders.


- Thought Leaders
o Thought leaders harness the power of ideas to actualize change. They
stretch their followers by helping them envision new possibilities.
- Thought Leaders

- Inspirational Leaders
o Inspirational leaders promote change by the power of their passionate
commitment to ideas and ideals. They lift our eyes from present
practicalities to future possibilities. Their words stir up our spirits,
strengthen our convictions, and move us to action. We are eager to follow
them because they call forth the best that is in us.
- Servant Leaders
o Servant leaders care deeply about people. They seek to remove the
barriers and obstacles that hold others back from achieving their full
potential. They strive to create an environment where their followers can
do their best work.
