Lesson Focus: Stretch Words/Write Sounds

Standard/Benchmark:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.3 - Write narratives in which they recount two or more
appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use
temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.E - Spell untaught words phonetically, drawing on
phonemic awareness and spelling conventions.

Objectives:
Students will be able to stretch out words and write the sounds they hear.
Students will be able to spell untaught words phonetically when they write.

Motivation/Accessing Prior Knowledge (The Hook):


Remind students of the last small moment stories they wrote. Explain we are going
to begin a brand new story.
Review the small moment anchor chart and show story hand.

Learning Activities/Assessments*
Have students bring their story idea sheet, white board, marker, and eraser to the
carpet.
Explain that we are now going to begin writing our small moment stories & learning
how to stretch the words and write the sounds we hear.
Model stretching words on first page of the last story I wrote.
Choose new story idea from my idea sheet, sketch the pictures, and stretch sounds
on first page as students follow along with their whiteboards.
o Model underlining if not sure if a word is correct.
Assessment: Give students 1-2 words. Have them stretch the word and write the
sounds they hear on their white boards. Hold them up.
Have students choose new story idea. Go off to sketch and write first page (who and
where). Encourage them to use the strategies we practiced.

Closure:
Turn and talk about the strategies we can use if we are unsure how to spell a word
when we write.
