Aisling
a knitting pattern by Justyna Lorkowska

Size
One: approx. 200 cm/80 wide and 50 cm/20 long at center.

Yarn
2 skeins (one of each color) of Eden Cottage Yarns Titus 4ply (70% merino wool,
30% silk; 400m/436y per 100g). Sample made in colors CC1 - Rambling Rose and
CC2 - Ice.

Needles
3.5 mm/US #4 circular needle (100 cm/40" long).

Other
2 stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving.

Gauge
22 sts and 28 rows = 10 cm/4" in St st measured flat after wet blocking.
Additional working gauge: 24 sts and 30 rows = 10 cm/4" in St st measured flat
before wet blocking.
The gauge isnt crucial on this project, but differences will affect the finished size as well
as the required yardage.

Pattern Stitches
Stockinette Stitch (flat) - Row 1 (RS): knit; Row 2 (WS): purl.

Abbreviations
BO - bind off; CC - contrasting color; cn - cable

Cable Stitches
2/2 LC - sl2 sts to cn, hold in front, k2, then k2 from cn.
2/2 RC - sl2 sts to cn, hold in back, k2, then k2 from cn.
2/2 LC* - sl2 sts to cn, hold in front, k1, p1, then k2
from cn.
2/2 RC* - sl2 sts to cn, hold in back, k2, then p1, k1
from cn.
2/2 LPC - sl2 sts to cn, hold in front, p2, then k2 from
cn.
2/2 RPC - sl2 sts to cn, hold in back, k2, then p2 from
cn.
2/3 LPC - sl2 sts to cn, hold in front, p1, k2, then k2

2/3 RPC - sl3 sts to cn, hold in back, k2, then k2, p1

Pattern Techniques
Cable Cast-On - *Insert RH needle between the first
two stitches on LH needle, wrap and bring through.
Transfer the newly created stitch onto the left hand
needle. Rep from * until you have cast on the specified
number.

Construction
The shawl begins at the center and is worked outwards to
border. There are two yarn-over increases in every row which
create a long banana-like shape. The shawl is worked in
Stockinette stitch with eyelets, which resemble raindrops,
interrupted by Garter stripes. The lacy cabled border is
worked sideways at the end and attached to the body by
means of simple decreases and slipped stitches.
The sample shawl is worked in two contrasting colors but
would look equally beautiful when knit in just one.
The charts for all sections are at the end of pattern
instructions.
Instructions
Garter Tab
CO 3 sts in CC1.
Knit 6 rows.
At the end of last row, do not turn to work to other side,
but rotate piece 90 degrees clockwise so that the long side
of the Garter rectangle is at the top. Pick up and knit 3
sts along this edge (1 st each in the purl bumps of the
Garter ridges).
Rotate piece another 90 degrees.
Pick up and knit 3 sts along the CO edge = 9 sts.
Turn work.
Note: Every row in the shawl body (i.e., every section except
Border) increases 2 sts. Stitch counts are given at the end of
each section.
Garter Center
Set-up Row (WS): k3, pm, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, pm, k3.
Row 1 (RS): k3, sm, yo, k to m, yo, sm, k3.
Row 2 (WS): k3, sm, yo, k to m, yo, sm, k3.
Work last two rows once more. 19 sts
Break CC1.
Section 1 of Raindrops
Change to CC2.

Finishing
Weave in ends. Wash the shawl and block it giving it a
banana-like shape. Pin the shawl body to the blocking
board stretching the shawl from the middle outwards and
pinning it in all eyelets along the edge. Make sure to open
up lace sections. Enjoy!
