Content Standard Addressed: SB1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze the nature of
the relationships between structures and functions in living cells.
b. Develop and use models to explain the role of cellular reproduction (including binary fission,
Mitosis, and meiosis) in maintaining genetic continuity.

Level 5: Expansion Level 6: Refinement

Lesson idea implementation:

Lesson will begin by reviewing material covered in previous class. Students can then work alone or in
pairs to create a concept map showing either mitosis, meiosis, or binary fission. Upon completion students
will then present their created concept maps to the class. To begin the next class students will be presented
with blank concept maps and be asked to fill them out. This lesson/project will most likely take one class
period to complete. Learning will be assessed by the accuracy of information of their individuals maps and by
how well the blank maps are filled out.
These concept can be used to inform classmates and as a study tool for the entire class. Since the
students will be using their knowledge to create a product I believe that this will be at the highest learning
level. The lesson will be concluded by students filling out concept maps for the cycle that their group did not
complete.
