6th Grade IB World Languages Semester Curriculum


French Overview

The following topics will be taught to 6th grade students in both Spanish and French, and will
be assessed at the end of the first semester on the examination:

Numbers 1-31
The alphabet
Introductions: name, age, greetings, salutations, how are you doing? (informal form)
Students should be able to ask and/or give the introductory information above.
The weather: What is the weather like today?
Students should be able to understand & respond to the question in the target
language. The following words must be included when teaching weather: hot, sunny,
cold, windy, raining, & snowing
Simple addition and subtraction. Students must know the word in the target
language for plus, minus, equals and be able to recognize & write numbers in words.
(Ex. diez + diez = veinte)
The days of the week: Students must be able to say the date (Ex. Today is Monday,
October 15th) & the days of the week (lunes, martes, lundi, mardi) in the target
language.

Time-permitting, the following topics may be taught to students for the purpose of
exposure. While they may not be on the upcoming end of semester examination they may
be included in the curriculum, and therefore be assessed, at a later date. They are:

Formal greetings
Seasons
Celsius versus Fahrenheit (including the conversion formula)
Kilometers versus miles
Time (analog): military time (in French), 12-hour clock (in Spanish)
Classroom commands
Colors
Higher order math: Division & multiplication
