Reflections:

Reflect on how your instructional activities, strategies, assessment tools link with the theories of
education presented in your coursework throughout the program.

During this session, our group was getting to know our new student, Elaina Pacella. Elaina is
almost 6 years old and is in kindergarten at St. Agnes School. We spent time with Elaina asking
her questions based on the two surveys provided, Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences.
Elaina loves to talk and to tell stories to her teachers. Elaina spoke about her family, her school,
her teacher, and gymnastics, which she participates in after school. Getting to know your student
or students is very important in order to provide them with a personalized education. We want to
create activities for Elaina that we will feel comfortable completing and that hold her interest.
Using this information, we used the research from Howard Gardner to create activities that
would reach her multiple intelligences.

Summer 2017
Hour[s] of this Session: 1 Total Hours to Date: 2
Date of this session: June 5, 2017 Time: 6 PM to 7 PM
Students Name: Elaina Pacella
Grade and Subject Area (or other description): ELA (Sequencing) and Math (Addition)
Reaction to Effectiveness of Instructional Activities Which Took Place during the Tutoring
Session, provide at least two specific examples:

BrainPop Jr Video (Sequencing): Elaina watched a BrainPopJr Video on sequencing as an

introduction to the lesson. Elaina was engaged in the video and was able to answer all the
questions on the Hard Quiz at the end of the video. This knowledge transferred through the rest
of the lesson. At the beginning of the lesson, Elaina traced her hand and labeled each finger with
a transition word. After watching the video, she was able to make the connections of sequencing
to those transition words.

Math Task Cards: Elaina really responded to the task card activity that occurred during the Math
Lesson. One of the teachers read her the problem as she looked on to the card. Elaina spoke
through the problem by reciting the number sentence and writing the sum on her paper. The
teachers wanted to move on to another activity, before finishing the task cards, and Elaina
wanted to finish the task cards before going on to the next activity.

Reflections:

Reflect on how your instructional activities, strategies, assessment tools link with the theories of
education presented in your coursework throughout the program.

In the first session we learned that Elaina was a visual learner. We wanted to incorporate that
into as many of the activities as we possible could. For a pre and post assessment for both ELA
and Math, we used Kahoot as a way to assess what Elaina knew and what she learned in the
lesson. Elaina loved the idea of it being like a video game. The teachers had a few technical
difficulties at the beginning as this was our first time using this tool, as well. Once we got a
handle on how Kahoot works, both the teachers and Elaina were engaged in completing the
assessments.

In addition, Elaina expressed a love for BrainPopJr in the first session and a love for completing
the Hard Quiz after each video. The teacher thought it would be a great way to introduce the
topic of sequencing. Elaina loved watching the video and was so excited to take the Hard Quiz
after.

In ELA, we wanted to focus on her writing about life cycles of animals, so we gave her a choice
of which animal she wanted to read about. Out of three animals, she chose frogs. Giving her the
choice gave her the feeling of her being in control of her own learning.

In Math, Elaina loves playing with the Jumbo di. We felt it was important to incorporate that into
the lessons for her to get in movement, as well as, learn about addition. Elaina loved using the di
to play Seven by Seven, which is a math game.

To my surprise, she also loved the task cards and completing the word problems. She talked
through each problem and was able to explain her thinking to the teachers.

During this tutoring session, we used the research from Howard Gardner to create activities that
would reach her multiple intelligences. We also used Vygotskys theory of Social Learning
Theories where Elaina would work with the tutors to explore different topics.

ChatterPix: During the ELA portion of our lesson, we were focusing on brainstorming in the
writing process. Elaina read a passage about the Frogs Life Cycle and recited out loud the
sequence of events. A teacher write down her ideas as she was speaking. Then, Elaina recorded
herself using ChatterPix, which is an app where you take a picture of something and can draw a
line to demonstrate the picture talking. Elaina really enjoyed this so much! We had a frog talking
as she read aloud the sequence. She enjoyed watching the video back as well.

Addition War: Elaina loves to play games. She was so excited when we played Addition War.
She wanted to show off and get the answers correct, telling the players whose number was higher
or lower. Elaina works well with manipulatives she can create or touch.

Reflections:

Reflect on how your instructional activities, strategies, assessment tools link with the theories of
education presented in your coursework throughout the program.

During the ELA portion of the lesson, Elaina read the Frogs life cycle for all the teachers. Then,
she recited the sequence of events. Elaina enjoys having conversations with her teachers and
discussing multiple topics.

Elaina really responses to the technology assessments. She feels she is playing a game and is
able to really concentrate on each questions when working.

In Math, Elaina loves playing games. Elaina really enjoyed the Addition War game and wanted
to help everyone with their cards. Elaina was able to add both one digits numbers together, along
with telling which person has the greatest number and smallest number.

In addition, Elaina again responded really well to the assessments that were on Quizizz. She
loved the idea that is was a game.

During this tutoring session, we used the research from Howard Gardner to create activities that
would reach her multiple intelligences. We also used Vygotskys theory of Social Learning
Theories where Elaina would work with the tutors to explore different topics.

Reaction to Effectiveness of Instructional Activities Which Took Place during the Tutoring
Session, provide at least two specific examples:

Twister Addition Game: Elaina loved the idea of solving an addition problem and having to look
for the sum on the twister board. She loved the movement and the fact that she could walk on the
board to place her number card. This was such an engaging way to get Elaina into math without
sitting and working through problems.

Kahoot: Elaina loves playing Kahoot! We have her verse another tutor to make it more fun and
competitive. Elaina loves how interactive Kahoot is and always asks to play the game.

Reflections:

This session we focused on writing our first draft and working on addition problems with two
digits numbers.

We found that Elaina did not want to write at first, but when she discovered that she could record
her writing on Chatter Pix she was very excited. She loves to watch herself back after she records
her voice.

In the math portion of this tutoring session, Elaina loves playing games. We tried to incorporate
as many games into the session as possible. We played addition war as a warm up to review
addition strategies. Elaina loved when the tutors would participate in the game with her. In
addition, she loved the Twister math game. Elaina is very active and needs to move around
during the tutoring sessions. The Twister game was perfect for her to move and place the
addition sentences on the sum.

During this tutoring session, we used the research from Howard Gardner to create activities that
would reach her multiple intelligences. We also used Vygotskys theory of Social Learning
Theories where Elaina would work with the tutors to explore different topics.

Chatter Pix: Elaina loves to record herself on Chatter Pix. This is a great self assessment for
Elaina, as she can hear herself reading her own writing. Elaina really loves to record her voice
and play back the recording.

Addition War: Elaina has really loved playing addition war with the tutors. Both the tutors and
Elaina put out two cards in front of them and Elaina has to add the two numbers together. Elaina
loves to see who has the higher number once the two cards have been placed out in front of them.

Reflections:

Reflect on how your instructional activities, strategies, assessment tools link with the theories of
education presented in your coursework throughout the program.

In ELA this session, we worked on editing our writing. The tutors and Elaina used a checklist to
focus on a few things during the editing process. For example, capital letters starting a sentence,
punctuation marks, and correct spelling of sight words. It was interesting to see what Elaina
picked up in her own writing when we went back to check.

In all the sessions, Elaina has loved playing our pre- and post- assessment games. She loves
the use of technology in our lessons.

In the math session, we introduced subtraction, along with addition, to see her skills. Elaina loves
using manipulatives in math. This session we used dice and fish counters. Using these tangible
objects Elaina has been able to show her skills to the tutors and show her work when she is
thinking.

During this tutoring session, we used the research from Howard Gardner to create activities that
would reach her multiple intelligences. We also used Vygotskys theory of Social Learning

BrainPop Jr Game: Student E really enjoyed using the computer to play a math game. She is
always asking to use the computer and we were able to incorporate this game into the lesson.
Student E was engaged and kept asking questions that related to addition and subtraction.

Kahoot: Student E loves playing Kahoot. She feels as though it is a game and wants to keep
playing, even though we are using it as an assessment. She loves being able to use the iPhone to
connect and answer the questions.

Reflections:

Reflect on how your instructional activities, strategies, assessment tools link with the theories of

During this tutoring session, we focused on the publishing stage of writing and
addition/subtraction. In the ELA portion, we used Student Es writing from last session, where
we used a checklist to edit her writing. We used that same paper to write the final draft. This was
a great exercise because Student E was able to see where her mistakes were and how she fixed
them for the final draft. Student E was also able to draw a picture to illustrate her writing.
During the math session, we focused on addition and subtraction. We were able to come up with
a variety of activities to keep her interest going. Student E has also expressed interest in certain
games to place and practice her skills. We have noticed throughout the entire tutoring session
that she tends to rush through adding or subtracting, just to finish quickly.

During this tutoring session, we used the research from Howard Gardner to create activities that
would reach her multiple intelligences. We also used Vygotskys theory of Social Learning

During this ELA portion of the tutoring session, the tutors focused on publishing Student
Es writing using Chatter Pix and reviewing the writing process. First, Student E filmed herself
using Chatter Pix. Then, Student E took the pre-assessment on Quizizz. Next, the tutors and
Student E watching how to write a paragraph on BrainPop Jr. After that, the tutors and Student E
threw a ball to each other with different stages of the writing process on the ball. Then, Student E
had to describe the stage of the writing process that her finger was on. Finally, Student E took the
post assessment. We wanted to compare the results from the pre-assessment and the
post-assessment.
During the Math portion of the tutoring session, the tutors wanted to continue to focus on
addition and subtraction strategies. First, the student rolled the dice and added/subtracted two
numbers. Next, the student took the pre-assessment on Quizizz. Then, the tutors and Student E
watched an addition and subtraction video on BrainPop Jr. After that, the tutors and student
played Addition/Subtraction bowling. When the student rolled the ball and knocked down the
pins, the student had to add/subtract the pins that were standing up and knocked over together.
Finally, the student took the post-assessment on Quizizz. We wanted to compare the results from
the pre-assessment and the post-assessment.
