Tenants PAC Releases NYC Council Endorsement Questionnaire

14 Council Incumbents Also Endorsed

For Immediate Release: June 20, 2016 Contact Michael McKee, 917-669-2977

New York - Tenants Political Action Committee, New York's only organization dedicated to electing
pro-tenant candidates to public office, today issued their 2017 NYC Council questionnaire for this
year's primary and general elections.

Candidates are asked their positions on issues important to renting families, including rent and evic-
tion protection laws, Mitchell-Lama, public housing, the NYC Rent Guidelines Board, homelessness,
land use and zoning, loft tenants, predatory landlords and tenant harassment.

"Even though Albany has wrongly taken away the City Council's authority over rent stabilization and
other laws that directly affect City residents, the Council can enact laws to protect renters and pre-
serve our threatened affordable housing stock," said Tenants PAC treasurer Michael McKee.

In addition to policy questions, Tenants PAC asks candidates if they will pledge not to support any
state senator for re-election who is a member of the turncoat Independent Democratic Conference,
which keeps Republicans in control of the chamber even though the GOP members now constitute a
minority.

The questionnaire, along with a letter to candidates explaining the process, are on the Tenants
PAC web site (tenantspac.org) on the Endorsements page. The deadline for submitting a complet-
ed questionnaire is Friday, July 21. The Tenants PAC board will interview candidates beginning in
mid-July.

Tenants PAC is in the process of finalizing a list of incumbent members for endorsement, based on
their legislative performance. Those incumbents who have already been endorsed include:

CCD 3 Corey Johnson CCD 31 Donovan Richards

CCD 5 Ben Kallos CCD 33 Steve Levin
CCD 6 Helen Rosenthal CCD 34 Antonio Reynoso
CCD 7 Mark Levine CCD 38 Carlos Menchaca
CCD 9 Bill Perkins CCD 39 Brad Lander
CCD 25 Danny Dromm CCD 45 Jumaane Williams
CCD 27 Daneek Miller CCD 49 Debi Rose

Tenants PAC was founded twenty years ago in response to the disastrous changes in the rent laws
made by the New York State Legislature in 1997. Its mission is to give a strong public voice to ten-
ants and to make tenants a viable electoral force. While Tenants PAC focuses its contributions and
election efforts on the New York State Legislature, which has ultimate power over all state and local
rent protection laws, the group also endorses pro-tenant candidates for New York City and suburban
offices.
