Install NI Academic Software for Mac OS X and Linux

Overview
National Instruments provides development support for LabVIEW and selected add-ons with Mac OS X and Linux. This paper
outlines these offerings for academic institutions as well as how to gain access to the software.

Note to Students:
National Instruments does not recommend using the Mac OS X version of LabVIEW to communicate to NI hardware. To
properly access the hardware drivers, NI recommends using Boot Camp to natively run Microsoft Windows on a machine
running Mac OS X and using the Windows version of LabVIEW.
To install LabVIEW for Mac OS or Linux, you must obtain a copy of the software to install it. LabVIEW for Mac OS X and
LabVIEW for Linux are shipped in activated states and thus are not posted for download at ni.com. To obtain a copy of
LabVIEW for Mac OS X, you must purchase it through one of NIs distributors such as Studica. Alternatively, if your school h
purchased the Student Install Option with an Academic Site License you can obtain the Mac OS software from your license
administrator. The Student Install Option through the purchase of an Academic Site License is the only option for student use
NI LabVIEW for Linux.

1. NI Support for Mac OS X


The LabVIEW Development Environment as well as the following add-ons are supported on Mac OS X:
LabVIEW Toolkit for LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT
LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module
LabVIEW MathScript RT Module
National Instruments does not recommend using the Mac OS X version of LabVIEW to communicate to NI hardware. To proper

2. NI Support for Linux

LabVIEW MathScript RT Module
LabVIEW VI Analyzer Toolkit
LabVIEW Internet Toolkit
National Instruments also provides multi-device drivers that support a variety of I/O hardware with Linux.

3. Obtaining a Copy of the Software
If you want to use LabVIEW for Mac OS or LabVIEW for Linux, you must obtain a physical copy of the software to install it.
LabVIEW for Mac OS and LabVIEW for Linux are shipped in their activated states and thus are not posted for download at
ni.com.
The Mac and Linux software is included with the purchase of an Academic Site License. If you need a copy of the DVDs that
contain the Mac and Linux software, please Contact NI.
4. Distributing NI Mac and Linux Software to Students
If you have purchased the Student Install Option with your Academic Site License, students are entitled to the Windows, Mac O
X and Linux versions of the NI Software included. Students can download the Windows version of the software from ni.com (
http://www.ni.com/academic/download.htm). They must obtain the Mac OS X and Linux software from the Academic Software
License administrator.
