8 Parts of Speech

1. Noun : . A noun is a part of speech that names a person, place, thing, idea, action
or quality. All nouns can be classified into two groups of nouns, either common or
proper. Proper nouns refer to the individual name of a person, place or thing.

Examples :

John started to run.

The restaurant is open.

2. Verb : A word that represents an action or a state of being. Go, strike, travel, and
exist are examples of verbs. A verb is the essential part of the predicate of a sentence. The
grammatical forms of verbs include number, person, and tense.

Examples :

Jesse laughed hysterically.


Irine tasted the food.

3.Adjectives : an adjective is that it is a word that describes or clarifies a noun.


Adjectives describe nouns by giving some information about an objects size, shape, age, color,
origin or material.

Examples :
Its a big table. (size)

Its a brown table. (color)

4. Adverb : is a part of speech used to describe a verb, adjective, clause, or


another adverb. It simply tells the readers how, where, when, or the degree at which
something was done.

Examples :
The manager accepted the challenge very nicely.
The italicized word is an adverb that describes nicely, which is another adverb.
Tears began to fall as he saw the completely lifeless body of his wife.
The adverb in this sentence is completely, which describes the adjective lifeless.
