ASSIGNMENT # 5

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS
( UNIT V )
Q(1) Distinguish between symmetrical and unsymmetrical bending of beams. Specify
various configurations along with sections where the loading could result into
unsymmetrical bending of beams.

Q(2) A curved beam of rectangular cross section is subjected to pure bending with bending
moment of 400 N-m. The beam has width of 20 mm and depth of 40mm and is curved in a
plane parallel to depth. The mean radius is 5 cm ( centroidal Axis). Find the location of
neutral axis (i.e. the distance from the centroidal axis.)

Q(3)Explain the following area moments of inertia for any irregular section with formulae
and neat diagrams:

(1) Area moment of inertia - Ixx

(2) Area moment of inertia Iyy
(3) Product moment of inertia - Ixy

Q(4) Using fundamental concepts, prove that angle between the principal axis ( U,V )
and the X-Y axes is given by the formula Tan2 =( 2 Ixy)/( Iyy-Ixx) where section is
unsymmetrical around both X-Y axes and

Ixx : moment of inertia around X axis, Iyy : moment of inertia around Y, axis Ixy:product
moment of inertia.

Q(5) Discuss applications of curved beams with diagrams..
