The golden method to boost your

IELTS listening from 6.0 to 8.0
Have you ever encountered a frustrating feeling when your IELTS Listening score hovers around 25
correct answers ( equal to band 6 )?
Well, you might not the only one person who suffers this unsatisfying result. As an IELTS entirely
self-learner who has overcome this hindrance to lift up the listening score from around 6 and 6.5 to 8
in the real IELTS test within 3 months, I will reveal my secret method of IELTS Listening. Please
note that this strategy is only applied to students with a level of band 6 or higher. Students with
listening ability below that level should use a different strategy ( I will write about the strategy of
listening for a beginner in next posts)
I. THE STEPS OF THE METHOD
To begin with, if you are an IELTS learner, you are very likely to have heard about the method of
Listen and transcript the record, which is spread out popularly on The Internet. This method
encourages you to practise writing down everything you hear from the record and then collate what
you write with the official transcript. In my opinion, this is an effective method that can certainly
improve your Listening skill as well as your writing, if you work with it strenuously. However, you
might be bored to death when trying to write down everything you heard on papers. In reality, a
major proportion of IELTS learners give up this good habit after several days of practice. The reason
for such boredom is that this method is really slow and stagnant.I feel that it is a form of torture to
transcript records every day without witnessing a tangible improvement. That is a very slow and
time-consuming process. This article will propose a better strategy for different types of students to
benefit from the listen and transcript strategy and simultaneously avoid the boredom of this
traditional method.
Step 1: Download an Audio or Video player that can speed up the speed of the audio. One of them
is Potplayer : https://potplayer.daum.net/ Download this software and install it on your computer. If
you own an Ipad or other tablets, you have a wide range of applications that have this feature. But I
highly recommend Potplayer when using in personal computers because it can speed up and maintain
the quality of sound WITHOUT CHANGING THE PITCH OF THE VOICE.
Step 2: Preparing the listening source.
In this step, I highly recommend using the audio files in the series of 10 IELTS Cambridge official
practise test books. Do not use other sources when you have 3 months left for the IELTS, just focus
on these documents because they contain the most relevant area of vocabulary in the IELTS and
using other things might distract your IELTS learning.
If you learn fast and finish this source before the deadline, then use the audio files in OTHER
PRACTISE TESTS not in BBC 6 minutes ,VOA or other distracting stuff. Why ? Because IELTS is
IELTS, English is English. When you learn IELTS, lets focus 100% on IELTS sources. The other
things are minor and should be learned besides the time for IELTS. Getting used to the IELTS
listening audios will make you extremely more confident as you will be familiar with the pace of
Listening section, the positions of break time each section, and the signals of a transition between
different parts of sections.
Step 3: Open the audio you want to practise listening on Potplayer or the similar tools and speed up
its speed to 1.5 times the normal speed. Listen to each sentence the speaker says then pause the audio
(using the hot key Space on the keyboard for Potplayer) and recall the words in your mind ( In your
MIND, Writing it down on paper is not necessary. It is too boring !). If you cant hear a sentence,
turn back 5 seconds and listen again, using the hot key left arrow. If you cant understand a word
for a second try, then turn to the tapescript and see the solution immediately. Dont waste too much
time guessing it, your purpose is to filter out the NEW words. Repeat this process for the whole
session and for a block of 4 or 5 audios. Please remember to SPEED IT UP to 1.5 or 1.75 times on
Potplayer
Step 4: After step 3, collect a list of new vocabularies in the tapescript then use a flashcard maker (
or make it by yourself) to memorize these new words. The method of memorizing words in a faster
way will be soon available on my blog in the next post.
Step 5: Turning back to listen to the audios again. This time, SPEED UP THE AUDIO TO 2X times
(or faster if you want). And listen the audio REPEATEDLY. You can create a playlist and listen to
this Audios repeatedly in 2X Speed.
Step 6: Repeat these 5 steps for another block of audios. A block of audios should be the section 1 2
3 4 of the same Cambridge practise test.
Bravo! If you follow closely this instruction, you will improve your IELTS listening skill
magnificently in just 1-1.5 months. The core function of this cycle is :
Listen to the records in a higher speed to train your ears and simultanously filter out what words you
dont know => Separate these words and master it by an advanced technique of memorising =>
Listen to the records again and repeatedly in a 2X speed in order to comprehend the audios.
II. THE EXPLANATION OF THE METHOD
1. Why should you speed up the audio? Here are the reasons
Firstly, It saves your time. For example, instead of spending almost 1 hours listening to a record, you
just need only 30 minutes if you play it with the 2X speed. You will see an IELTS record flowing
very fast. For example, the length of a whole listening test is 30 minutes but this amount will shrink
to only 15 minutes, just a little longer than the length of a single music song.
Secondly, It trains your ears, raising your level of English understanding. If you deliberately train
yourself to catch up with a faster speed, your brain and ears will consequently get used to this speed.
After practising this technique, you may even SHOCK when coming back to listen the real IELTS
audio. You will be absolutely AMAZED that the real IELTS record is too slow, compared to the 2X
Speed with which you have attached. Its pace turns out to be so easy to you after a month practising
the speed up technique. How can you find it difficult if you can even understand the dialogue in a
much faster speed?
Thirdly, because of the saved time, you will definitely feel productive in your learning. the feeling of
an effective, less time-consuming practice will encourage you, not discourage you as in the
traditional Listen and transcript method.
In conclusion, this method saves your time, boost your level of understanding, and raise your
confidence
2. Why this technique works only with at least a band 6 student?
Answer: A band 6 in listening means the student has a considerable vocabulary. He or she has the
necessary amount of understanding in the listening section and just need to expand his or her
vocabulary. When it comes to a beginner, he or she cannot master the basic concept and, therefore,
find it impossible to catch up with a crazily high speed. It will simply not work with this type.
3. Why should you listen the audio repeatedly in step 5?
Answer: To completely comprehend and master the audio. That means you can even memorise every
tiny structure of the texts. In other words, if you try to listen to the audios repeatedly in 2x Speed, it
will consume a little amount of your time but make you learn the language BY HEART
4. Why should you believe this method?
Because I have DONE IT and SUCCEEDED in IELTS Listening. I am the person who always try to
find a faster method of learning, I have achieved the band 8 score in IELTS Listening by applying
this technique. And you can make it, too. Listening is a prerequisite, a first and foremost section to
obtain a high IELTS score.
5. Finally, you know that when you cannot understand a speech, there are two possible causes. The
first is you KNOW the meaning of those words but your ears cannot catch up the speed. The second
is you DONT KNOW the meaning of those words or in other words, the words are new words. For
these reasons, you should train your ears to match the talks speed and quickly build up a wide pool
of vocabulary to increase the likelihood of knowing words, Not WASTING your time on WRITING
DOWN WHAT YOU HAVE KNOWN ALREADY. Therefore, the Golden method helps you
quickly spot the words you do not know and fill your pool of vocabulary promptly.
