Farquhar,asupporteroftheConfederacy,learnsfromhimthatUniontroopshaveseizedtheOwlCreekrailroad
bridgeandrepairedit.ThesoldiersuggeststhatFarquharmightbeabletoburnthebridgedownifhecanslippast
itsguards.Hethenleaves,butdoublesbackafternightfalltoreturnnorththewayhecame.Thesoldierisactually
adisguisedUnionscoutwhohasluredFarquharintoatrap,asanyciviliancaughtinterferingwiththerailroads
willbehanged.

Thestoryreturnstothepresent,andtheropearoundFarquhar'sneckbreakswhenhefallsfromthebridgeintothe
creek.Hefreeshishands,pullsthenooseaway,andsurfacestobeginhisescape.Hissensesnowgreatly
sharpened,hedivesandswimsdownstreamtoavoidrifleandcannonfire.Onceheisoutofrange,heleavesthe
creektobeginthejourneytohishome,30milesaway.Farquharwalksalldaylongthroughaseeminglyendless
forest,andthatnighthebeginstohallucinate,seeingstrangeconstellationsandhearingwhisperedvoicesinan
unknownlanguage.Hetravelson,urgedbythethoughtofhiswifeandchildrendespitethepainscausedbyhis
ordeal.Thenextmorning,afterhavingapparentlyfallenasleepwhilewalking,hefindshimselfatthegatetohis
plantation.Herushestoembracehiswife,butbeforehecandoso,hefeelsaheavyblowuponthebackofhis
neckthereisaloudnoiseandaflashofwhite,and"thenallisdarknessandsilence".

ItisrevealedthatFarquharneverescapedatallheimaginedtheentirethirdpartofthestoryduringthetime
betweenfallingthroughthebridgeandthenoosebreakinghisneck.

Themes
Thisshortstorydemonstratesthatthereisnoromanceorgloryinwar.Thetitleofthestorycontainstheword
"occurrence",whichdemonstrateshowcommonthelossoflifeiswithinwar,lesseningtheperceivedvalueof
thosehumanlives.ThefantasythatFarquharhasdemonstratedthedangerofhavingillusionsaboutwar,because
warisnotalovestorythatendswithrunningtoyourwife'sarms,ithasruthlessandpitilesspunishment.

Anotherthemepresentinthestoryisthatof"dyingwithdignity".Thestoryshowsthereaderthatthereisno
mitigationforthedeathsthatoccurinwarfare,soevenattemptstohavemendiewithdignitywerelackingin
honor.

Thefinalideafocuseduponwithinthepieceistheideaofpsychologicalescaperightbeforedeath.Farquhar
experiencesanintensedelusiontodistracthimfromhisinevitabledeath.Themomentofhorrorthatthereaders
experienceattheendofthepiece,whentheyrealizethathedies,reflectsthedistortionofrealitythatFarquhar

Sinceitisnot(only)thenarratorwhotellsastorybut(also)thereaderhimorherself,anotheraspectisof
considerableimportancehere.Ashehimselfonceputit,(bitter)Biercedetested"...badreadersreaderswho,
lackingthehabitofanalysis,lackalsothefacultyofdiscrimination,andtakewhateverisputbeforethem,withthe
broad,blindcatholicityofaslopfedconscienceofaparlorpig".[5]FarquharwasdupedbyaFederalscoutand
cursoryreadersontheirpartaresuccessfullydupedbytheauthorwhomakesthemthinktheyarewitnessing
Farquhar'sluckyescapefromthegallows.Instead,theyonlywitnessthehallucinationofsuchanescapetaking
placeinthecharacter'sunconsciousmindwhichisgovernedbytheinstinctofselfpreservation.Inretrospectwe
seethatthetitleiftakenliterallyfromtheoutsetprovidesthereaderswiththeinformationthattherewillnotbe
anychangeofsceneryatallbecausesimplyanoccurrenceatthatbridgeisannounced.

Theentirestorymightwellbereadasaparable:Wearealldoomed,andwhateverfranticattemptswemaketo
gainourpersonalsalvationinourfinalmomenttherewillbenoepiphanybutonlyitsabsoluteoppositeand
negation,just"darknessandsilence".ThisisBierce'srejectionoftheChristianthesisofman'sfinalredemption,
anditistheultimatesymbolofthefutilityofhumanaspiration.Farquhar'smiserableendillustratesamostextreme
discrepancybetweenaspirationandreality.
