Everywhere,peopleareinahurry.Jetpoweredplanesspeedtheirprecioushumancargoacrossbroadcontinents
andvastoceans.Appointmentsmustbekept,touristattractionsbeckon,andfriendsandfamilyawaitthearrivalofa
particularflight.Modernfreewayswithmultiplelanescarrymillionsofautomobiles,occupiedbymillionsofpeople,in
aseeminglyendlessstreamfromdawntodusk,easttowest,northtosouth.

Doesthispulsating,mobileribbonofhumanityevercometoahalt?Isthehelterskelterpaceoflifeattimes
punctuatedwithmomentsofmeditationeventhoughtsoftimelesstruths?

Whencomparedtoeternalverities,thequestionsofdailylivingarereallyrathertrivial.Whatshallwehavefor
dinner?Isthereagoodmovieplayingtonight?Haveyouseenthetelevisionlog?WhereshallwegoonSaturday?
Thesequestionspaleintheirsignificancewhentimesofcrisisarise,whenlovedonesarewounded,whenpainenters
thehouseofgoodhealth,orwhenlife'scandledimsanddarknessthreatens.Thentruthandtriviaaresoon
separated.Thesoulofmanreachesheavenward,seekingadivineresponsetolife'sgreatestquestions:Wheredid
wecomefrom?Whyarewehere?Wheredowegoafterweleavethislife?Answerstothesequestionsarenot
discoveredwithinthecoversofacademia'stextbooks,bydialinginformation,bytossingacoin,orthroughrandom
selectionofmultiplechoiceresponses.Thesequestionstranscendmortality.Theyembraceeternity.

"BeforeIFormedThee..."

Wheredidwecomefrom?Thisqueryisinevitablythought,ifnotspoken,byeveryparentorgrandparentwhena
tinyinfantuttersitsfirstcry.Onemarvelsattheperfectlyformedchild.Thetinytoes,thedelicatefingers,thebeautiful
headtosaynothingofthehiddenbutmarvelouscirculatory,digestive,andnervoussystemsalltestifytothetruth
ofadivineCreator.

ThewordoftheLordcametoJeremiahtheprophet:"BeforeIformedthee...Iknewtheeandbeforethoucamest
forth...Isanctifiedthee,andIordainedtheeaprophetuntothenations."1Suchadirectstatementtooneof
mankindissurelyanexampleofwhatcouldbesaidtoeachofus.

TheApostlePaultoldtheAtheniansonMars'Hillthat"wearetheoffspringofGod."2Sinceweknowthatour
physicalbodiesaretheoffspringofourmortalparents,wemustprobeforthemeaningofPaul'sstatement.TheLord
hasdeclaredthat"thespiritandthebodyarethesoulofman."3ItisthespiritwhichistheoffspringofGod.The
writerofHebrewsreferstoHimas"theFatherofspirits."4GodHimselfisasoul,composedofaspiritandofa
bodyoffleshandbones,astangibleasman's.Heisaresurrected,glorified,exalted,omniscient,omnipotentperson
andisomnipresentinspiritandpowerandinfluence,theruleroftheheavensandtheearthandallthingstherein.The
spiritsofallmenareliterallyHis"begottensonsanddaughters."5

TheApostleJohn,citingtheSavior'swords,recordsasignificantthoughtpertainingtopremortallife:"Whatandifye
shallseetheSonofmanascendupwherehewasbefore?"6Andagain,"Nomanhathascendeduptoheaven,but
hethatcamedownfromheaven."7

Fromthestandpointofappearance,Jesusresembledeachofus.Theinquirywasfrequentlymade:"Isnotthisthe
carpenter'sson?"8EvenatthecloseofHismortalministry,JesushadtobeidentifiedbythetraitorJudas,since
thosewhowoulddoHimharmcouldnotdistinguishtheMasterfromthegroup.Sincewehavebeencreatedinthe
imageofGod,isitsodifficulttocomprehendourpremortallifewhenthatofJesusissoplainlytaught?

Anotherwriterdescribedanewborninfantas"asweet,newblossomofhumanity,freshfallenfromGod'sownhome
toflowerhereonearth."10

Parents,gazingdownatatinyinfantortakingthehandofagrowingchild,pondertheirresponsibilitytoteach,to
inspire,andtoprovideguidance,direction,andexample.Whileparentsponder,childrenandparticularlyyouthask
thepenetratingquestion"Whyarewehere?"Usuallyitisspokensilentlytothesoulandphrased"WhyamIhere?"

"InMyFather'sHouseAreManyMansions"

HowgratefulweshouldbethatawiseCreatorfashionedanearthandplacedushere,withaveilofforgetfulnessof
ourpreviousexistence,sothatwemightexperienceatimeoftesting,anopportunitytoproveourselvesandqualify
forallthatGodhaspreparedforustoreceive.

Clearly,theprimarypurposesofourexistenceupontheeartharetoobtainabodyoffleshandbonesandtogain
experiencethatcouldcomeonlythroughseparationfromourheavenlyparents.Inathousandways,weare
privilegedtochooseforourselves.Herewelearnfromthehardtaskmasterofexperience.Wediscernbetweengood
andevil.Wedifferentiateastothebitterandthesweet.Welearnthatdecisionsdeterminedestiny.

WhilePaultaughtthePhilippiansthatmaniscalleduponto"workout[his]ownsalvationwithfearandtrembling,"
11theMasterprovidedaguideweknowastheGoldenRule:"Whatsoeveryewouldthatmenshoulddotoyou,do
yeevensotothem."12

ByobediencetoGod'scommandments,wecanqualifyforthat"house"spokenofbyJesuswhenHedeclared,"In
myFather'shousearemanymansions....Igotoprepareaplaceforyou...thatwhereIam,thereyemaybe
also."13

Contemplatingsuchfarreachingmatters,wereflectuponthehelplessnessofanewbornchild.Nobetterexampleof
totaldependencycanbefound.Nourishmentforthebodyandloveforthesoulareneeded.Motherprovidesboth.
Shewho,withherhandinthehandofGod,descendedinto"thevalleyoftheshadowofdeath"14thatyouandI
mightcomeforthtolifeisnot,inhermaternalmission,abandonedbyGod.Preciouschildrenarewelcomedbyeager
families.

"UntoUsWastheGospelPreached"

Longago,theprophetMormoncounseledhissonMoronitoteach"repentanceandbaptismuntothosewhoare
accountableandcapableofcommittingsinyea,teachparentsthattheymustrepentandbebaptized,andhumble
themselvesastheirlittlechildren,andtheyshallallbesavedwiththeirlittlechildren.Andtheirlittlechildrenneedno
repentance,neitherbaptism.Behold,baptismisuntorepentancetothefulfillingthecommandmentsuntothe
remissionofsins.ButlittlechildrenarealiveinChrist."15

TheLordhasprovidedaprivilegedperiodbetweenbirthandeightyearsofage,whenaccountabilityisattainedand
baptismisrequired.

Dr.GlennDomanhaswritten,"Thenewbornchildisalmostanexactduplicateofanemptycomputer,although
superiortosuchacomputerinalmosteveryway....Whatisplacedinthechild'sbrainduringthefirsteightyearsof
lifeisprobablytheretostay."16

Theearlylifeofachildisatimeforfoundationbuilding.Buildafoundationfortheeternities,anditwillwithstandthe
tempestsandtrialsofmortality.

Wellmightparentsask,"Whatlessonsshallweteach?"or"Whattruthsareofgreatestconsequence?"Faithisthe
firstprincipletobetaughtourpreciouschildrenanabidingfaithinGodourEternalFatherandinHisSon,Jesus
Christ.PaulwrotetotheHebrews,"Foruntouswasthegospelpreached,aswellasuntothem:buttheword
preacheddidnotprofitthem,notbeingmixedwithfaithinthemthatheardit."17

Severalyearsago,theSaltLakeCitynewspaperspublishedanobituarynoticeofoneofmyclosefriends,takenby
deathintheprimeofherlifeasawifeandmother.Ivisitedthemortuaryandjoinedahostofpeoplegatheredto
expresstheircondolencestothedistraughthusbandandmotherlesschildren.Suddenlythesmallestchild,Kelly,
recognizedmeandtookmyhandinhers.

"Comewithme,"shesaid,andsheledmetothecasketinwhichrestedthebodyofherbelovedmother."I'mnot
crying,BrotherMonson,andneithermustyou.MymommytoldmemanytimesaboutdeathandlifewithHeavenly
Father.Ibelongtomymommyandmydaddy.We'llallbetogetheragain."

Throughtearmoistenedeyes,Irecognizedabeautifulandfaithfilledsmile.Tomyyoungfriend,whosetinyhandyet
claspedmine,therewouldneverbeahopelessdawn.Sustainedbyherunfailingtestimony,knowingthatlife
continuesbeyondthegrave,she,herfather,herbrothers,hersisters,andindeedallwhosharethisknowledgeof
divinetruthcandeclaretotheworld:"Weepingmayendureforanight,butjoycomethinthemorning."18

Beyondtheteachingandlearningoffaith,weemphasizetheprincipleofrepentance."Repent,andturnyourselves
fromallyourtransgressionssoiniquityshallnotbeyourruin,"19declaredEzekielofancienttime.Hispleawasfor
peopleeverywhereandinalltimestoceasefromdoingwrongandturntorighteousliving.

Next,wehearkentothecounseloftheLordtoNicodemus:"ExceptamanbebornofwaterandoftheSpirit,he
cannotenterintothekingdomofGod."20WerecognizetheexampleoftheLord,JesusChrist,inbeingbaptizedby
JohnintheriverJordan.WefollowthepathwayHemarked.

Weknowthenecessityforthelayingonofhandsbythosewhohavetheauthority,thatwemightreceivetheHoly
Ghost.AsLukerecordedofPhilip'smissionaryworkinSamaria,"WhentheapostleswhichwereatJerusalemheard
thatSamariahadreceivedthewordofGod,theysentuntothemPeterandJohn,"who"laid...theirhandsonthem,
andtheyreceivedtheHolyGhost."21

Theorganizationbestsuitedtoteachthesevitalprinciplesisthefamily,andtheplacewheretheycanmosteffectively
belearnedisthehome.

Lifemoveson.Youthfollowschildhood,andmaturitycomeseversoimperceptibly.Fromexperiencewelearnthe
needforheavenlyassistanceaswemakeourwayalongthepathwayofmortality.

Wetreasurethisinspiredthought:

GodisaFather
Manisabrother.
Lifeisamission
Andnotacareer.23

God,ourFather,andJesusChrist,ourLord,havemarkedthewaytoperfection.Theybeckonustofolloweternal
veritiesandtobecomeperfect,astheyareperfect.24Weremembertheinquiringlawyerwhoasked,"Master,
whichisthegreatcommandmentinthelaw?

"Jesussaiduntohim,ThoushaltlovetheLordthyGodwithallthyheart,andwithallthysoul,andwithallthymind.
Thisisthefirstandgreatcommandment.Andthesecondislikeuntoit,Thoushaltlovethyneighbourasthyself."25

"TheRaceIsNottotheSwift"

TheApostlePaullikenedlifetoaracewithaclearlydefinedgoal.HeurgedtheSaintsatCorinthonwardwiththis
injunction:"Knowyenotthattheywhichruninaracerunall,butonereceiveththeprize?Sorun,thatyemay
obtain."26

Inourzeal,letusnotoverlookthesagecounselfromEcclesiastes:"Theraceisnottotheswift,northebattletothe
strong."27Actually,theprizebelongstohimwhoendurestotheend.

WhenIreflectontheraceoflife,Irememberanothertypeofrace,evenfromchildhooddays.WhenIwasabout
ten,myboyfriendsandIwouldtakepocketknivesinhandand,fromthesoftwoodofawillowtree,fashionsmalltoy
boats.Afterputtingatriangularshapedcottonsailinplace,eachboywouldlaunchhiscrudecraftintheracethrough
therelativelyturbulentwatersoftheProvoRiver.Wewouldrunalongtheriver'sbankandwatchthetinyvessels
sometimesbobbingviolentlyintheswiftcurrentandatothertimessailingserenelyasthewaterdeepened.

Duringsucharace,wenotedthatoneboatledalltheresttowardtheappointedfinishline.Suddenly,thecurrent
carriedittooclosetoalargewhirlpool,andtheboatheavedtoitssideandcapsized.Aroundandarounditwas
carried,unabletomakeitswaybackintothemaincurrent.Atlastitcametoanuneasyrestattheendofthepool,
amidtheflotsamandjetsamthatsurroundedit,heldfastbythefingerliketentaclesofthegrasping,greenmoss.

Thetoyboatsofchildhoodhadnokeelforstability,noruddertoprovidedirection,andnosourceofpower.
Inevitablytheirdestinationwasdownstreamthepathofleastresistance.

Unliketoyboats,wehavebeenprovideddivineattributestoguideourjourney.Weentermortalitynottofloatwith
themovingcurrentsoflife,butwiththepowertothink,toreason,andtoachieve.Weleftourheavenlyhomeand
cametoearthinthepurityandinnocenceofchildhood.

OurHeavenlyFatherdidnotlaunchusonoureternalvoyagewithoutprovidingthemeanswherebywecouldreceive
fromHimguidancetoensureoursafereturn.Yes,Ispeakofprayer.Ispeak,too,ofthewhisperingsfromthatstill,
smallvoicewithineachofusandIdonotoverlooktheholyscriptures,writtenbymarinerswhosuccessfullysailed
theseaswetoomustcross.

"Come,FollowMe"

Individualeffortwillberequiredofus.Whatcanwedotoprepare?Howcanweensureasafesailingtoourdesired
destination?

First,wemustvisualizeourobjective.Whatisourpurpose?TheProphetJosephSmithcounseled,"Happinessisthe
objectanddesignofourexistenceandwillbetheendthereof,ifwepursuethepaththatleadstoitandthispathis
virtue,uprightness,faithfulness,holiness,andkeepingallthecommandmentsofGod."28Inthisonesentenceweare
providednotonlyawelldefinedgoalbutalsothewayinwhichwemightachieveit.

Second,wemustmakecontinuouseffort.HaveyounoticedthatmanyofthemostcherishedofGod'sdealingswith
Hischildrenhavetakenplacewhenindividualswereengagedinaproperactivity:thevisitoftheMastertoHis
disciplesonthewaytoEmmaus,thegoodSamaritanontheroadtoJericho,evenNephionhisreturnto
Jerusalem.

Third,wemustnotdetourfromourdeterminedcourse.Inourjourneywewillencounterforksandturningsinthe
road.Therewillbetheinevitabletrialsofourfaithandthetemptationsofourtimes.Wesimplycannotaffordthe
luxuryofadetour,forcertaindetoursleadtodestructionandspiritualdeath.Letusavoidthemoralquicksandsthat
threatenoneveryside,thewhirlpoolsofsin,andthecrosscurrentsofuninspiredphilosophies.

Fourth,togaintheprize,wemustbewillingtopaytheprice.LetusrememberhowSaulthepersecutorbecamePaul
theproselyter,howPeterthefishermanbecametheApostleofspiritualpower.

OurexampleintheraceoflifecouldwellbeourElderBrother,eventheLord.Asasmallboy,Heprovideda
watchword:"WistyenotthatImustbeaboutmyFather'sbusiness?"29Asagrownman,hetaughtbyexample
compassion,love,obedience,sacrifice,anddevotion.Toyouandtome,Hissummonsisstillthesame:"Come,
followme."

"IfaManDie,ShallHeLiveAgain?"

Atsomeperiodinourmortalmission,thereappearsthefalteringstep,thewansmile,thepainofsicknesseventhe
fadingofsummer,theapproachofautumn,thechillofwinter,andtheexperiencewecalldeath.

EverythoughtfulpersonhasaskedhimselfthequestionbestphrasedbyJobofold:"Ifamandie,shallheliveagain?"
30Tryaswemaytoputthequestionoutofourthoughts,italwaysreturns.Deathcomestoallmankind.Itcomesto
theagedastheywalkonfalteringfeet.Itssummonsisheardbythosewhohavescarcelyreachedmidwayinlife's
journey,andoftenithushesthelaughteroflittlechildren.

Butwhatofanexistencebeyonddeath?Isdeaththeendofall?Suchaquestionwasaskedofmebyayoung
husbandandfatherwholaydying.IturnedtotheBookofMormonand,fromthebookofAlma,readtohimthese
words:"Now,concerningthestateofthesoulbetweendeathandtheresurrectionBehold,ithasbeenmadeknown
untomebyanangel,thatthespiritsofallmen,assoonastheyaredepartedfromthismortalbody,yea,thespiritsof

allmen,whethertheybegoodorevil,aretakenhometothatGodwhogavethemlife.Andthenshallitcometo
pass,thatthespiritsofthosewhoarerighteousarereceivedintoastateofhappiness,whichiscalledparadise,a
stateofrest,astateofpeace,wheretheyshallrestfromalltheirtroublesandfromallcare,andsorrow."31

WeareawarefromrecordedscripturethatwhilethebodyofJesuswasplacedinthetomb,ChristHimselfpreached
tothespiritsinprison.Peterdeclared:"ForChristalsohathoncesufferedforsins,thejustfortheunjust,thathe
mightbringustoGod,beingputtodeathintheflesh,butquickenedbytheSpirit:Bywhichalsohewentand
preacheduntothespiritsinprison."32

JustpriortoHisdeath,JesussaidtoHisApostles,"Verily,verily,Isayuntoyou,Thehouriscoming,andnowis,
whenthedeadshallhearthevoiceoftheSonofGod:andtheythathearshalllive."33AgainfromPeter'sepistle:
"Forthiscausewasthegospelpreachedalsotothemthataredead,thattheymightbejudgedaccordingtomenin
theflesh,butliveaccordingtoGodinthespirit."34

AfterthebodyofJesushadlaininthetombforthreedays,thespiritagainentered.Thestonewasrolledaway,and
theresurrectedRedeemerwalkedforthclothedwithanimmortalbodyoffleshandbones.

"He...IsRisen"

TheanswertoJob'squestion"Ifamandie,shallheliveagain?"camewhenMaryandothersapproachedthetomb
andsawtwomeninshininggarmentswhospoketothem:"Whyseekyethelivingamongthedead?Heisnothere,
butisrisen."35

ManytestimoniesoftheresurrectedLordprovidecomfortandunderstanding,includingthesethree:

First,fromtheApostlePaul:"Christdiedforoursinsaccordingtothescriptures...hewasburied,...herose
againthethirdday....HewasseenofCephas,thenofthetwelve....Hewasseenofabovefivehundredbrethren
atonce....HewasseenofJamesthenofalltheapostles.Andlastofallhewasseenofmealso,asofoneborn
outofduetime."36

Second,fromthecombinedtestimonyoftwentyfivehundredofHisothersheep,asrecordedintheBookof
Mormon,anothertestamentofJesusChrist:TheresurrectedLord"spakeuntothemsaying:Ariseandcomeforth
untome,thatyemaythrustyourhandsintomyside,andalsothatyemayfeeltheprintsofthenailsinmyhandsand
inmyfeet,thatyemayknowthatIamtheGodofIsrael,andtheGodofthewholeearth,andhavebeenslainforthe
sinsoftheworld.

"Anditcametopassthatthemultitudewentforth,andthrusttheirhandsintohisside,anddidfeeltheprintsofthe
nailsinhishandsandinhisfeetandthistheydiddo,goingforthonebyoneuntiltheyhadallgoneforth,anddidsee
withtheireyesanddidfeelwiththeirhands,anddidknowofasuretyanddidbearrecord,thatitwashe,ofwhomit
waswrittenbytheprophets,thatshouldcome.

"Andwhentheyhadallgoneforthandhadwitnessedforthemselves,theydidcryoutwithoneaccord,saying:
Hosanna!BlessedbethenameoftheMostHighGod!AndtheydidfalldownatthefeetofJesus,anddidworship
him."37

Third,fromJosephSmith:"Afterthemanytestimonieswhichhavebeengivenofhim,thisisthetestimony,lastofall,
whichwegiveofhim:Thathelives!Forwesawhim,evenontherighthandofGodandweheardthevoicebearing
recordthatheistheOnlyBegottenoftheFatherThatbyhim,andthroughhim,andofhim,theworldsareand
werecreated,andtheinhabitantsthereofarebegottensonsanddaughtersuntoGod."38

"InChristShallAllBeMadeAlive"

TheApostlePaulsummarized,"ForasinAdamalldie,evensoinChristshallallbemadealive."39Astheresultof
Christ'svictoryoverthegrave,weshallallberesurrected.Thisistheredemptionofthesoul.Paulwrote:"Thereare.

..celestialbodies,andbodiesterrestrial:butthegloryofthecelestialisone,andthegloryoftheterrestrialisanother.

fromanotherstaringlory.Soalsoistheresurrectionofthedead."40

Itisthecelestialglorywhichweseek.ItisinthepresenceofGodwedesiretodwell.Itisaforeverfamilyinwhich
wewantmembership.Suchblessingsareearned.Ahighreportcardinmortalityqualifiesustograduatewithhonors.

Andforthosewhohavediedwithoutaknowledgeofthetruth,awayhasbeenprovided.Sacredordinancescanbe
performedbythefaithfullivingforthewaitingdead.HousesoftheLordknownastemplesdottheland.AsElijahthe
prophettestified,theheartsofthefathershavebeenturnedtothechildren,andthechildrentothefathers.41None
shallbedenied.Allshallhaveopportunityforeternalblessings.

Wheredidwecomefrom?Whyarewehere?Wheredowegoafterthislife?Nolongerneedtheseuniversal
questionsremainunanswered.Fromthedepthsofmysoul,andinallhumility,ItestifytothetruthswhichIhave
presented.OurHeavenlyFatherrejoicesforthosewhokeepHiscommandments.Heisconcernedalsoforthelost
child,thetardyteenager,thewaywardyouth,thedelinquentparent.TenderlyHespeakstothese,andindeedtoall:
"Comeback.Comeup.Comein.Comehome.Comeuntome."IpraythatallmankindmayacceptHisdivine
invitationtoexaltation.
