AcceptableUsePolicyforTechnologyandComputingSystems

PolicyStatementandPurpose
Thepurposeofthispolicyistoprovideguidelinesandacceptableuseproceduresforschool
ownedresourcesandtechnologyatElkCoveHighSchool.Thispolicydefinesacceptableuse
ofinternet,electronicmailandcommunication,andtechnologyresources.
WhoNeedstoknowthisAUP
Allfaculty,students,staff,administration,andanyonehavingaccessorassociationwiththe
networkatElkCoveHighSchoolisheldtothestandardsoftheAcceptableUsePolicy.
AcceptableUseDefined
InaccordancewiththerequirementsoftheChildrensInternetProtectionAct(CIPA),all
districtcomputersthatcanaccesstheinternetwillbemonitoredandfilteredforany
unacceptableorinappropriateconduct.ElkCoveSchoolDistrictreservestherighttomonitorall
formsofinternetandemailuseasthisnetworkshouldbeusedforstrictlyacademicpurposes.
AnystudentorstaffusingECSDtechnologyorresourcesunderstandsandagreesthathe/she
iswaivingprivacyincommunications,datastored,displayedortransmitted.
Studentsorstaffwhoviolatethispolicyorallowotherstodosomayhavehis/heruser
privilegesrevokedandmaybesubjecttodisciplinaryactionuptoandincludingexpulsion.The
ElkCoveBoardofEducationreservestherighttopursuecriminalchargesforanyunauthorized
useofECSDresourcesortechnologyapplicationsasdeemednecessary.Ifcriminalactivityis
discovered,suchinformationmaybedocumentedbythedistrictandtheappropriateauthorities
willbecontacted.
InternetUse
Thedistrictwillrestrictaccesstooffensive,illegal,andobscenematerialsthatcould
bedeemedharmfultominorsthroughtheuseofinternetfilters.However,sincethe
districtcannotrestrictaccesstoALLinformation,ifquestionablecontentisaccesseditis
theresponsibilityofthestudentorstafftoreporttheinformationtotheDepartmentof
Technologyoradministration.Ifsuchinformationhasbeenaccessedintentionally
disciplinaryactionmaybetaken.
InternetUse(Continued):
Internetuseshouldberestrictedtoaccessingdistrictapprovedonlineresourcesand
conductingresearchforclassroomassignmentsorcurricularresources.Internetaccess
isavailablethroughthedistricttosupportlearningandeducationalopportunities.All
studentsandstaffareresponsiblefortheiractionsandcommunicationswhileusingthe
internet.
Internetaccessistobeusedinaresponsible,legal,andethicalmannerwithrespectto
local,state,andfederalcopyrightlaws.Studentsandstaffshouldprotecttheirpersonal
informationandidentitybynotsharingthisinformationwithunauthorizedindividualsor
associations.
ECSDhasazerotolerancepolicyforharassmentincludingbutnotlimitedtoverbal,
discriminatory,obscene,threatening,orotherwiseharmfulactionsinviolationofboard
policy.Anytransmission,display,orstorageofexplicit,defamatory,oroffensive
materialsisstrictlyprohibitedatalltimes.
ElectronicMailandCommunications
Studentsandstaffwillupholdresponsibleappropriatestandardswhilesendingdistrict
approvedelectronicmailandsubmittingpersonalinformationforacademicpurposes
suchaspostsecondaryinstitutions,scholarshiporcareeropportunitiesorotherschool
appropriateapprovedwebapplications.All@elkcove.orgemailaccountsarefilteredand
anyquestionablemailcontentmaybepursuedbytheDirectorofTechnologyand
administration.
Studentsandstaffshouldprotecttheirpasswordsandpersonalinformationatalltimes
andnotsharethisinformation.Electronicusersareresponsibleforappropriateconduct
whileusingtheECSDnetworkatalltimes.Anysuspiciousactivitydetectedshouldbe
reportedtotheECSDDepartmentofTechnologyimmediately.
SoftwareandHardware:
Whenaccessingdistrictcomputers,printers,andresourcesstudentsandstaffarenot
authorizedtodeleteorotherwisealterorinterruptthenetworkaccessofElkCove
SchoolDistrict.Anyindividualsuspectedofcorruptingfilesorattemptingtobypassthe
districtfilterinanunauthorizedmannerwillbesubjecttodisciplinaryaction.

TheAcceptableUsePolicyIchosetowritewasforafictitioushighschoolcalled
ElkCoveHighSchool.Iwantedtoexplorewritingthispolicyforaschooldistrict
becauseofmyexperiencewithtechnologyasahighschoolteacheratBrunswickCity
SchoolDistrict.Ireferencedourschooldistrict'sAcceptableUsePolicytogivemyselfa
startingpoint,andbegantoresearchandcomparevarioushighschoolpoliciesonthe
internet.Ithinkourschooldistrictdoesagreatjobspecificallyidentifyingacceptable
internetandnetworkusewithinthedistrict,andclearlydefiningstandardsand
disciplinaryaction.
IcontinuedmyresearchandreadseveralarticlesthatIfoundhelpfulforbuilding
asuccessfulAcceptableUsePolicy.IincludedtheChildrensInternetProtectionAct
(CIPA)becauseIthinkitisaveryimportantdocumenttoconsiderwhengivingminors
accesstotheinternetwithinaschooldistrict.IalsosawthatGreenBayAreaSchool
District,anotherAUPIexplored,referencedCIPAwithintheirpolicy.
Forme,itwasveryimportanttostressthezerotolerancepolicyforharassment,
bullying,defamationofcharacter,andinappropriatepotentiallyharmfulimagesand
verbalcontentforminors.Ihaveseenhowthesetopicscanbeharmfultohighschool
agedstudentsandhowsomestudentswilltrytogetaroundschoolfilterstoaccess
inappropriateinformation.
Iwantedmypolicytobeorganized,containclear,conciseformattingandvery
specificexpectationsofdistrictpolicies.IthinkIaccomplishedthiswithinmyAUP,itis
userfriendlyandeasytounderstandbutstillhitsthemaingoalsofwhatanAcceptable
UsePolicyissupposedtobetomyunderstandingfrommyresearchandreadings.I
feelthatIhaveaddressedtheexpectationsandconsequencesofasuccessful
AcceptableUsePolicyforstudentsandstaffwithinahighschoolsetting.
