The West Milton Low Dam
Recently, families from the Village of West Milton have expressed concerns regarding the proposed removal of the
West Milton Low Dam.
The West Milton Low Dam is owned by the Village of West Milton. The Village of West Milton wants the dam to be
removed, while many of the families surrounding the dam do not support the proposed removal. The first meeting
regarding this issue was held on June 9, 2010.
Senator Strahorn was in attendance for the June meeting and the second meeting, held on July 14. At the July 14
meeting, Senator Strahorn joined local stakeholders, State Representative Richard Adams, Superintendent Dr. Ginny
Rammel, members of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and City Manager Tony Howard to address the
community’s questions and concerns regarding the dam.

Important Grant Funding Projects Approved
For Miami & Montgomery Counties
Senator Strahorn is pleased to announce the following projects in Miami and Montgomery Counties were recently
approved for grant funding:
• The Ohio Controlling Board approved the release of $199,903.00 from line item C19501, Clean Ohio Assistance,
to the City of Piqua for a Phase II Environmental Assessment on the Piqua Memorial Hospital property in Piqua,
Miami County.

• The Ohio Controlling Board approved the release of a Thomas Edison Program grant in the amount of
$325,000.00 to Dayton Miami Valley Entrepreneurs Center, Inc., in Dayton, Montgomery County, to support the
Edison Incubator Services.

• The Ohio Controlling Board approved the release of a Thomas Edison Program grant in the amount of
$1,000,000.00 to Edison Materials Technology Center, Inc., in Dayton, Montgomery County, to support the Edi‐
son Technology and Industry Center services.

• The Ohio Controlling Board approved the release of a Third Frontier Research and Development Fund grant in
the amount of $500,000.00 to the University of Dayton in Dayton, Montgomery County, to support the Wright
Projects Program, Hybrid Fabrics for Multifunctional Composites project.

About Your Senator
Fred Strahorn was appointed to the Ohio
Senate on March 31, 2009 to represent
the 5th Senate District. He was ap‐
pointed to complete the unexpired term
of State Senator Tom Roberts, who ac‐
cepted an appointment from Ohio Gov‐
ernor Ted Strickland to serve on the Ohio
Civil Rights Commission.
He previously was serving as the vice‐
president of governmental affairs for the
Ohio United Way. He signed on to the
Ohio United Way at the beginning of
2009, after serving eight years in the
Ohio House of Representatives as a
member from the Dayton, Ohio area.
State Senator Fred Strahorn (D‐40th House District) ended his time in the House as the Minority Whip in the 127th
General Assembly. He served four terms in the Ohio House of Representatives. He represented the communities of
Trotwood, Harrison Township, parts of Huber Heights, Riverside and Dayton.
Mr. Strahorn graduated from the Ohio State University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Aviation Manage‐
ment.
After graduation, he moved to Dayton, Ohio where he worked in a family business, managing residential rental prop‐
erties. In 1994, he obtained his license to sell real estate and worked as a realtor with Century 21 Trans Am and then
Coldwell Banker Heritage.
He served as president of the Congressional Advisory Council to Congressman Tony Hall for two years, and is a for‐
mer member of the Southwest Dayton Business Association and the Dayton Area Board of Realtors.
In 1997, Fred Strahorn became involved in public service professionally. He was employed as a Legislative Aide to
State Representative Tom Roberts from 1997‐1999 and State Senator Mark Mallory from 1999‐2000, after which he
was elected in November 2000 to represent the 39th House District (which was later redistricted into the 40th Dis‐
trict).
He has a strong interest in gaining experience in international affairs. In 1999, he was part of a Rotary International
Group Study Exchange to Sweden, living with families and interacting with his professional counterparts in Sweden
as well as the professional counterparts of other members of the exchange. In 2005, he participated with the Ameri‐
can Council of Young Political Leaders in a political exchange to India, where he was able to meet with individuals
from various elements of the political spectrum in India, from elected officials to civil servants to party leadership.
His interests are Education, Healthcare and International Affairs.
Fred Strahorn’s greatest joy in life is his daughter, Morgan Allison Strahorn.
