A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible ruler.

It consists of a ribbon of cloth, plastic,

fiber glass, or metal strip with linear-measurement markings. It is a common measuring tool. Its
design allows for a measure of great length to be easily carried in pocket or toolkit and permits
one to measure around curves or corners. Today it is ubiquitous, even appearing in miniature
form as a keychain fob, or novelty item. Surveyors use tape measures in lengths of
over 100 m (300+ ft).

A ruler, sometimes called a rule or line gauge, is an instrument used in geometry, technical
drawing, printing, engineering and building to measure distances or to rule straight lines. The ruler is
a straightedge which may also contain calibrated lines to measure distances.

A yardstick is a straightedge used to physically measure lengths of up to a yard (0.9144 metres or

3.0 feet long) high. Yardsticks are flat wooden boards with markings at regular intervals.

The steel square is a tool used in carpentry. Carpenters use various tools to lay out structures that
are square (that is, built at accurately measured right angles), many of which are made of steel, but
the name steel square refers to a specific long-armed square that has additional uses for
measurement, especially of various angles.

The 24" Hip Curve Ruler can be used to create long graceful curves when designing garments or
making alterations.

A French curve is a template usually made from metal, wood or plastic composed of many
different curves. It is used in manual drafting to draw smooth curves of varying radii. The shapes are
segments of the Euler spiral or clothoid curve. The curve is placed on the drawing material, and
a pencil, knife or other implement is traced around its curves to produce the desired result.
A chalk-like material used for marking alterations on fabric in tailoring and dressmaking. The
marks are brushed or washed off the material when no longer needed. a thin flat piece of
hard chalk or soapstone used by tailors and seamstresses for making temporary
marks on cloth

Tailor's chalk definition, hardened chalk or soapstone used to make temporary guide marks on
a garment that is being altered.

The teeth can be either serrated or smooth. It is used to transfer markings from patterns onto
fabric with or without tracing paper, this sewing tool also makes slotted perforations. Such
markings might include pleats, darts, buttonholes, notches or placement lines for appliques or
pockets.
Graphite pencils are used for both writing and drawingand result in durable markings: though
writing is easily removable with an eraser, it is otherwise resistant to moisture, most chemicals,
ultraviolet radiation, and natural aging.

Tracing paper is paper made to have low opacity, allowing light to pass through. It was originally
developed for architects and design engineers to create drawings which could be copied precisely
using the diazo copy process[citation needed], it then found many other uses. The original use for drawing
and tracing was largely superseded by technologies which do not require diazo copying or manual
copying (by tracing) of drawings.

BENT-HANDLE DRESSMAKER'S shears are best for pattern cutting; angle of lower blade lets fabric lie
flat. Made in 6 [inches] to 12 [inches) lengths; 7 [inches] and 8 ...

Pinking shears are scissors, the blades of which are sawtoothed instead of straight. They leave
a zigzag pattern instead of a straight edge.
Scissors - Use clamps to hold your fabric when measuring and cutting (see our article about
Measuring & Marking Tools). When it's time to sharpen the blades on your best shears, have it
done professionally. You'll see a big difference. Use your rotary cutter when you need to cut
through two or more layers at once.

Thread Clippers
Thread clippers are a handy little spring loaded cutting tool that allows for the
snipping of threads. These clippers are specifically used to snip threads and
are not designed to do anything but snip threads, they are not designed to cut
fabric and feel very awkward if one tries to use them for cutting fabric.

Seam Ripper
Seam rippers are specifically designed for ripping out stitches from seams,
either as a result of an error or during alterations. They should be used
carefully to prevent damage to the fabric.
2. Pin Cushion- a cotton-stuffed cloth cut and sewn in many different shapes to keep the pins in
place. It will help you work conveniently when placed on your waist.

3. Pins- used when cutting and sewing material. Helps save time in basting. Dull-pointed and
rusted pins should not be used b'coz they will destroy the fabric.

5. Thimble- made of either plastic or metal material w/c is used to protect the finger from being
pricked by the needle when sewing. A fitted thimble will help you sew comfortably especially
when you are not used in sewing with a thimble on your finger.

4. Needles- comes in three sizes: small, medium and large. Small needles are used on light and
soft material, while big needles are for rough, thick and heavy materials. Needles are used for
basting, sewing buttons on and when mending torn clothes.

A needle threader is a device for helping to put thread through the eye of a needle. Many kinds
exist, though a common type combines a short length of fine wire bent into a diamond shape, with
one corner held by a piece of tinplate or plastic.
