Title: Balloons Filled with Carbon Dioxide

Which flavor of soda will inflate the biggest balloons after adding the baking soda?

Purpose

The purpose of my experiment is to find out how the chemical reaction between baking soda and soda can
inflate a balloon.

Research

What is the chemical reaction of the mixing baking soda and soda?

A: The chemical reaction happened when the acid in the soda mixed with the baking soda and produced
carbon dioxide.

B: Carbon dioxide is the gas that is produced and that inflates the balloons.

Hypothesis
My hypothesis is, if you pour 2 Tsp Of baking soda with 8oz Of Pepsi soda on a water Bottle I think that the
balloon will inflate bigger then using flavor sodas.

Procedure

The experiment procedures for the project were the most important. As my dependent variables I used 2
teaspoons of baking soda for each balloon and 8oz of soda for each flavored bottle. My independent variable is
the different soda flavors. The control variables were the balloons, in which all four were same; as well as the
four empty water bottles.

Materials

1 box of baking soda

1 funnel

8 balloons

4 empty water bottles

4 different sodas Pepsi, grape, orange and Sprite.

1 iPhone camera and timer

1 measuring tape

2 measuring cups small and a big one

1 sharpie marker

paper towels

Data Graphs

Results

On my first try the results did vary the Pepsi balloon measured 21cm. The orange balloon measured 20cm. The
grape balloon measure 18.5 cm and the sprite balloon measure 20 cm. On the second try the results also got
slightly different results. The Pepsi balloon measured 21.5 cm. The orange balloon measure 14.5 cm. The grape
balloon measured 17.5 cm and sprite balloon measure 20.5 cm.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my experiment results did support my hypothesis because it shows that the Pepsi soda inflated
the biggest balloon. That means Pepsi has a larger amount of acid. Thats the reason why the Pepsi balloon was
the biggest one.
