Yes, I think job rotation is a good method to use for developing management trainees. Bennet
(as cited in Saravani & Abassi, 2013) describes that job rotation is a process that will make
employees move from one job to another job which had been planned by management for the
employees in certain period of time in order to achieve goals on gaining skills, increase the
employees motivation as well as increase their job performance and productivity. It is the best
method that can be used by a company to develop their trainees since job rotation is a win-win
situation for both employee and employer of the organisation where job rotation will help the
employee to learn something new and do some enhancement for themselves, increase the
motivation of the trainees and job rotation also helps employers to learn about their staffs in
term of skills and abilities that their trainees have.

Employee Learning

According to Noe and Foe (as cited in Zin, 2013) from the job rotation the management trainees
will be able to learn extensive knowledge of particular functional areas, to expand a network
of organisational contacts and to enhance trainees skills. In support of this view, Monday (as
cited in I.Nwaeke, 2015) claims that job rotation is the most powerful method in providing
diversity of experience and help in developing the trainees in all industrial sectors as well as
service oriented industries such as hospitals and offices. The experience that the trainees gain
from each department will helps the trainees to carry out their work task systematically. For
instance, Eli Lilly and Co., an Indianapolis-based producer of pharmaceuticals, secretaries and
administrative assistants frequently take part in job rotations and earn priceless experience that
can be used by them to carry out their daily work more effectively (Greengard, 1999). In the
same time, by gaining experience from each job during job rotation program, the employees
able to work in variety position in the company without having any problem as an example
Mitsuji Muraoka is one of Toyo Kogyo Company employees where the company produce
Mazda cars and Japan's third-largest automobile maker, already worked there for almost 26
years and has been an accountant, a plant designer, an efficiency watchdog, a materials-
handling specialist and a computer systems manager due to job rotation that had been
implemented by the company (LOHR, 1982).

Employee Motivation

From trainees point of view, job rotation is one of the ways that can help them to increase their
job satisfaction since one of the problems that normally face by trainees is getting bored since
they need to keep on doing the same job and there are no any new challenges in their work life
which can make them dont like their current jobs. This statement is strengthened by Adage &
Brief (as cited in I.Nwaeke, 2015) which claims that trainees might not maintain in performing
as management desires due in having boring same routine jobs. Therefore, in order to solve
this problem, one of the ways is by implementing job rotation for the trainees since Cosgel and
Miceli on 1999 (as cited in Adjei, 2012) indicates that an increase in job satisfaction is one of
what trainees can get through job rotation. In their model, performing variety of work tasks
instead of single task is what trainees prefer thus it helps in increase their job satisfaction.
Besides, Kuijer et. all on 2004 (as cited in Saravani & Abassi, 2013) states that by
implementing job it helps in diversifying job skills, minimizing monotony works which lead
to increase the motivation of the trainees as well as helps in decreased the absence rate.
Therefore, job rotation is the best method in solving this problem since the trainee will shift
from one department to another department which helps in minimizing or completely remove
the burden of monotonous and repetition daily task. To support this view, a pilot study carried
by Earney & Martins on 2009 (as cited in Ibrahim, 2011) shows that Cardiff University Library
service is using job rotation for their six library assistants and it shows that job rotation does
increase in motivation, as well as technical skills and career development of the library
assistants. In the same time, in 1996, Susan (as cited in Zin, 2013) claimed that large number
of companies are using job rotation as one of the tool to increase the motivation of the trainees
by let them have variety of tasks and enhancing the employee socialization.

Employer Learning

Aside from employee, the employer would start to get to know their trainees through job
rotation. This is because according to Eriksson and Ortega, 2004 (as cited in Adjei, 2012) by
doing job rotation the employer can observe their trainees performance for each different job
and recognise the abilities of their employees as well as their strength every time when the
trainees rotating from one job to another job. By observing on the performance and recognise
the abilities of the trainees, these will help the firm to identify which job is the most appropriate
for each employee and assign them to do that job. As an example, Nestl come up with The

3|Page
Nestl Management Trainee Programme which only take 2 years. The first year, Nestl will
rotate their employees within specific function such as human resources and the second year,
Nestl will assign the management trainees job that is suitable for all of them based on the
performance, skills and abilities that had been performed and showed during the first year of
the job rotation (SAYS,2015). Syed Amir Faisal Syed Ali, who is Nestl Corporate
Responsibility Executive that had joined the programmed said that the training that he received
is now helping him to drive initiatives that benefit the business (SAYS,2015).

Last but not least, a well-planned job rotation program can help the trainees to equip themselves
with lots of useful skills and knowledge that is needed in order to make them work in effective
and efficient ways as well as providing job satisfaction towards the trainees, while the company
will be able to allocate their trainees properly and make the company become more productive
and its one of the ways that can help the company to success since through job rotation they
will be able to put the right person at the right job. As the conclusion, job rotation is the most
effective method to develop and enhance the productivity of an organisation as well as helps
in developing the management trainees in the company.
